im not gonna waste my time proving my point, just listen to the commentator towards the end, its knowledge speaking, havlat went to play the puck, sure he missed it, but he got lined up and the defensemen did try and time it because 9 times out of 10 that puck would be played and the hit would have been fairly legal, no it was not a charge, otherwise it would have been called that way altho he appeared to leave his feet but that was already after the contact was made. look again. mr. know it all
that hit was cleaner than clean, i'm nicknaming kronwall mr. clean! u hate to see people get hurt, but those hits are a part of the game, and as long as u got mr. clean doin that way, the sport will live forever!
@slickwilly9684 This hit is illegal in so many ways. A) it's interference beyond a resondable doubt. B) it's charging because he left his feet. I don't think he intended to hurt him I think he just got overly excited. But still it was a poor decision on Kronwalls part that almost got a guy killed
Ghostwalker: The NHL said it was a clean hit, and multiple angles showed the same thing.
Kronwall was given a game misconduct because the refs were shocked. It was a complete breakdown in officiating. No offense, but by and large, the only people currently maintaining that the hit was dirty are Blackhawks fans.
@Crymson1 it was a text book interference and since he was injured he gets a game misconduct no break down at all...and by the way the only ones still whining about this are red wings fans. I'm kind of getting sick of getting comments on this page that I posted months ago because wings trolls are still looking at it
@darkphoenix2 it is illegal. It's interference. Read your rule book. 56.1 Interference-....making contact with the non-puck carrier is not permitted and will be penalized as interference. 1:39 Kronwall is making contact yet no puck possession has been gained yet.
56.5 Game Misconduct Penalty – When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed.
@Kartracer6 Again, you're doing the super literal black and white thing with the rules. The defensemen are allowed to make a play to stop the puck carrier, and have to make a split decision. Havlat would have touched the puck if he hadn't made that play, so either way his hit served the same purpose and had the same result. That hit is simply how you play hockey.
@darkphoenix2 1) no he would have picked up the puck and seen kronwall coming. The hit, if there had been one, wouldn't have been nearly as dangerous. 2) the rule is there to keep guys from getting hurt...this is the perfect example. There is a reason you gotta play by the rules and this is a great example of what happens when you make an illegal hit and yes it's Illegal
@Kartracer6 no puck possession? well 1st off he knew where the puck was and where it was going because of his right skate moving forward. right there he had a sense of it. 2nd if you think that would be a penalty then some1 give me pads and skates and ill crawls along the rink with the puck between my feet. bet any stick that touches me would get a penalty then... come on now its hockey not soccer
@JuggernautG24 first off he wasn't going down the ice trying not to touch it. He clearly was reaching for the puck, he was trying to obtain possession of it. GUESS WHAT Kronwall hit him before he could do it. If you hit a player to prevent him from getting to a puck it's INTERFERENCE. Oh and 2nd if you tried to go down the ice not touching it all a defender has to do is scoop in and grab the stick...simple as that. this penalty will get called pretty much every time.
@frankfetchd Watch the video and the replays. His skates were on the ice when he hit Havlat. As with any big hit, the impact propelled him slightly into the air.
All I see is you jumping on Kronwall for a clean open-ice hit. Watch after the play. See how Kronwall gets crosschecked into the boards? See how 2 or 3 Hawks players are stepping all over Havlat kicking him in the head and neck, trying to get a cheap shot on Kronwall while he's on the ice?
If you want to whine and call it a dirty hit, fine, but you have to admit your own players are talentless goons who deserved to lose.
What a hit. Havlat is dumb for staring at the ground while he skates! How can anyone say that was dirty? If an NHL player has to look at his stick while he skates, he deserves to have his career ended by a brutal hit from Kronwall.
The Hawks have a slim chance of coming back being down 3-1 heading back to Detroit. They had a great season & exceeded my expectations making it this far. They have a great young team. My only hope now is that they take the opportunity to avenge Havlat & hurt Detroit's chances by taking out a few Red Wipes on the way.
are you kidding me....a red wings fan talking classiness. You can't be serious Detroit is one of the most classless teams in the NHL Fans included. You realize this hit had nothing to do with head up or head down. It had to do with Kronwall hitting a player before he obtained the puck
He had to get the puck....you can't hit a guy before he gets the puck...this is what it causes, a serious injury. He should have been suspended for this....but no the wings would cry about it and how they are getting "screwed" yet they suspended another player for having a mid ice collision and he gets 5 games. What a joke. That's ok the wings are on the downfall this year.
i'll be honest, i don't know about the 5 game mid ice collision i can't argue that, but on this it was a very hard it, he got kicked out of the game, which might be the right call.but he didn't just hit someone to hit them the puck was under the guy he hit. he was trying to make a play.
I'm wondering how much of a play he is trying to make. Look at the video even before the puck hits the wall Kronwall is at full speed aiming at Havlat. Not once in this whole situation does he look down at the puck. He projectiles him self into Havlat and just completely cheap shots him. He hit him way to early and he even admitted to that. After hearing several of Kronwall's interviews anyway I'm starting to realize this guy's IQ level is very low.
you say it is a complete cheap shot but if the puck had not taken a weird bounce off the boards havlat wouldn't have looked down at the last second and he would have seen the hit, its not kronwalls falt that havlat looked down
There was no weird bounce...Havlat was receiving the pass and Kronwall hit him early he had no intent to play the puck. It just helps redwing fans sleep at night when they use the excuse "he should have kept his head up" The play has nothing with keeping his head up. Kronwall hit him early and intensively. He was ejected for his actions and it should have resulted in a suspension and fine. Havlat played the game Kronwall made a stupid play.
@Kartracer6 Nowhere in the rulebook does it say that you have to play the puck in order to deliver a hit. It's hockey and if you don't like devastating hits, REGARDLESS of who is involved, then go watch basketball.
A “pick” is the action of a player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. A player who is aware of an impending hit, not deemed to be a legal “battle for the puck,” may not be interfered with by a player delivering a “pick.” A player delivering a “pick” is one who moves into an opponent’s path without initially having body position, thereby taking him out of the play.....
@jimmytango7 (continued). When this is done, an interference penalty shall be assessed. Possession of the Puck: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. At what point in this video does Havlat touch the puck?
@jimmytango7 The rules state he has to touch it. I think I'll take the rules over your personal opinion. Sounds like your in denial. The refs caught it, the rules state it, the call was made. It's not a legal hit by any means. So unless you can supply a rule proving that between his legs is possession your wrong. PERIOD!
@Kartracer6 I'm sorry man, but your nitpicking thru the rules. If Havlat wasn't completely motionless and unconscious, there would have never been a penalty called. I've played hockey competitively for the last 16 years of my life, not that that proves anything, but if the puck is in a guy's feet, he's fair game. It was the severity of the hit that resulted in the penalty, not the hit itself.
@jimmytango7 First off yes it's sad that a injury makes a difference in a call or not. But that doesn't help your case it hurts it. It just shows the other calls not called are wrong. It's not nit picking. The rule is there to keep the guy safe. The reason for the motionless and unconsciousness is because an infraction took place. If you seriously think its ok to do this there is something seriously wrong with you. The hit it's self should always result in a penalty.
@Kartracer6 Alright well, I'm not gonna get into a pissing match over a hit that took place two years ago, ya know. I agree with Olcyk's analysis of the hit, so you and I will just have to agree to disagree.
@jimmytango7 I'm not looking for a "pissing match". I've actually been waiting for a single person to explain to me what rule makes this hit legal? All I keep hearing is "if it's close it's legal" or "if it's under his legs it's legal" But it's like I ask for the rule and all I seem to get is people avoiding the question or making comments like "it's in the rule book but I'm not looking it up". I mean come on guys it's ok to look at this as a legal hit but at least defend your claim.
@Kartracer6 well to be honest, i cant say with any certainty that theres a specific rule defending the circumstances. im just speaking from personal experience and literally thousands of games that ive watched. all i can say is that a puck in your feet, whether it's touched first or not, is USUALLY fair game for physical contact. ya know what im trying to say? like, the puck is within his person lol. i completely get your argument as well, but from my personal experience i have to disagree.
@jimmytango7 No part of the rule makes this play right. Think about it a different way. The point of the rule was to protect the player from being hit while he is waiting to gain possession of a puck. Had Havlat gained possession he could have braced, if not avoided, the hit. Kronwall even states at one point he didn't know if Havlat had the puck. A rule of thumb taught to me was if you can't see the puck look at the players head, if it's down he most likely doesn't have possession yet.
@Kartracer6 Also, I highly, HIGHLY doubt that the rulebook goes into this kind of detail regarding possession of the puck and/or hits in this situation. it's just such a random play the way the puck acts before the hit.
@jimmytango7 Now don't get that comment confused. If his head is down and you can see the puck on his stick, then hit the guy, but if he is looking down and you can't figure out where the puck is or if it's been touched then odds are he has yet to gain possession. I see this call called inconsistantly I'll give you that. But in reality it's in the context of the rules and the officials called it for that reason.
it was no cheap shot the puck was right between his skates, if that isn`t possession of the puck you don`t know what you are talking about. the hit was perfectly timed and a taste of things to come for you hawks suckers once the 2010 playoffs start. go ahead count out the wings , this is what is going to happen to hossa this year.
are you red wings really still crying about this...come on man I know you got nothing this year but seriously it's pathetic. It's text book penalty the call was right and he's just lucky he didn't get suspended for doing this. I'm right your wrong get over it....or do the hawks have to beat you 3-0 a third time for you to learn
@Kartracer6 In what way are the Wings the most classless in the league? They persistently take last place in the league in fighting majors, game misconducts and player suspensions. The last player for the Wings who could be considered even remotely a dirty player was Derian Hatcher, and he was on the team six years ago.
@Crymson1 well figuring by the second round they had a hit count, penalty min count, and major penalty count that was higher then any of the 3 teams when those 3 teams where in the Conference finals. And by the end of the playoffs they lead hits by a massive amount 2nd most minor pen. 3rd most majors. And if you look in past years this trend continues. Classless fans starting fights at games...classless is written all over this one
@Crymson1 Go look at the stats from last years playoffs....what more evidence do you need it's written in black and white. It doesn't get any more simple then that.
it was clean the puck was in his feet he did lead with the elbow but it hit havlat in the chest and if you actually watch the replay when its slowed down u can see his feet stay on the ice and only go up after havlat slides underneath him. The penalty was only called to please the hawks and defuse the situation
Dude, shut up douchebag. The hit was as clean as it gets, Havlat was just stupid enough to keep his head in the fucking ice. Stupidity like that deserves massive hits like that. Kron Wall of Pain owned his face in. And I'm not cheering for any particular team in the NHL, I just like the entertainment from watching the best ice hockey possible.
sounds like a fan whos never actually played holming, its a timing chance, he expected the puck to come to his stick, which then he would have seen 55 coming & brace for a hit, except it hit the boards & went thru his legs, his vision was on where the puck was & not on the play.
u should read & learn 1st before u open ur gorilla mouth. loudmouth ass.
Yeah I mean I only played ice hockey for 14 years, what do I know. Also I was a ref myself for 2 years, for 15 yrolds by all means but I know the book. And that was a clean hit. In case you didn't notice he angles his skates so that the puck will come through, he saw it very well.
Kartracer6-- "Typical Redwings play...hitting with intent to injure" LOL...No, the Wings are a skilled, puck posession team. The puck was UNDER Havlat, so Kronwall had to take Havlat off the puck. Go look up checking. No suspension from the league. Initially the refs did not call a penalty and only did so after seeing Havlat prone on the ice. They called Interference. Doesn't sound like the kind of penalty you get for an "intent to injure" hit, does it?
That would be the exact penalty I would see. He never played the puck he just went full out at havlat it was 100 percent with out a doubt intent to injure.
You obviously don't understand the game of hockey so instead of blabbing away on here and making an idiot out of yourself, why don't you go watch a chess match or something. The Red Wings have a Stanley Cup to win.
LOL so if it was so clean why is it a 5 min major for INTERFERENCE and a 10 Min Game Misconduct. Doesn't sound clean to me. Sounds like you have no idea what hockey is
The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. The player deemed in possession of the puck may be checked legally, provided the check is rendered immediately following his loss of possession. He clearly had no possession. Interference..if you injure a player on an interference it's a 5 min. major and a 10 min game misconduct. No real argument here the rules state that
your a fucking idiot lol, your just protecting your pussy ass team, you need to stop wacthing the game, your making it for pussies, your team is just to young to take a CLEAN hit, and yes, typical red wing play? ok they make you pay the price of not playing the game right, just like kronwall did here, clear 5min? shouldnt even been a 2min. refs were just nervous under pressure and dazzed by the crowds reaction and the fact that Cambell sucked off the refs before the game GO WINGS!!!!!
Wow, what the hell planet are you living on? Everyone on the planet knows it was a clean hit. Obviously you don't understand the game of hockey. It's called "keep your head up"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
it's called "play the puck" that faggot didn't he went to hurt havlet. Retard Refs got the call right I figured the Redwings couldn't keep playing the way they started with the fair game because they would get beat.
haha, too bad 99% of people think you're hitting the moon bat. Learn the game of hockey....oh I forgot, you are a Hawks fan, that might be impossible.
LOL gotta love those redwings fans they all share the same thing ignorance for the sport in idiot comments. but hey at least you stick together as idiots. Good going
LOL to bad it was the red wings crying when they realized if they didn't play cheap they would get outplayed....LOL It's so pathetic. and the best part is the fans are proud of winning like that. :-) what a disgrace
Let the red wings pick puffs or kleenex the're the one who has to use it. Detroit Red Wings=Disgrace to the league, least likely to learn from, can't get any sell outs in playoff games till the 4th game.
Disgrace to the league...LOL no wonder no body likes Detroit. the whole damn city. LOL guess they need to be good at least one sport ha ha unlike Chicago who just seems to dominate. So take your pussy hockey to the playoffs as the majority of people who where watching will just tune out because it's just a pointless playoffs now. So congratulations for making a disgrace to the sport and funny no one cares. I know it sucks but your team is an embarrassment to hockey proven over and over
No, you're just an obnoxious internet troll who probably has a lisp and a tiny dick. The Blackhawks are dirty, and they suck. They didn't dominate anything except the penalty box and the Greyhound bus on the way home.
Really, I'm sure that was a well-thought out argument on your part, but it sounds like your retarded little brother wrote it. We won because we're bad, that line of thinking never gets old.
When's the last time the Blackhawks were relevant, man? Tell me that.
another idiot wings fan. You people are so annoying you never shut up. Ha if they suck so bad why did they get to the Semi finals. I'm not even mad we didn't advance I mean we weren't even expected to get past the first round we just we're expected to make it to the playoffs nothing more. It's the fucking disgrace redwings shit I'm mad at It's crap when you skate around trying to injure players as the fans point and cheer at each injury.
Your player should have had his head up. Why didn't they make it to the SCF? I'll tell you why, the best team kicked your teams ass. Havlat got his ass clocked. Kronwall made Havlat his little bitch. If you can't handle hard hits in hockey...I suggest you stick with watching bowling or golf.
Hell, you'll probably cry about how the bowling ball hits the pins or how the golf club hits he golf ball.
your whining. Detroit makes dirty hits no doubt this video is proof. Maybe next time play the puck. You disgrace to hockey fans and the players. LOL but hey all the red wing players are so old ha it's going to be hard to survive in years to come...HERE COME THE HAWKS YOUNG AND TALENTED. WATCH YOUR ASS BITCH WELL BE OWNING YOU FOR YEARS
Ok first of all what's misspelled and second seriously idiots like you should be banded from using youtube...LOL who honestly corrects spelling on a message board. It's for messages not your college essay it doesn't get spell check
it's youtube retard that's the point of having this thread. LOL to have intelligent debates....you seem to be lacking the intellect for this debate however. Go act like a 5 year old some where else
Lmao, the Red Wings played cheap? What was it in game 4, 24 minutes in penalties for Chicago? The Hawks suck, man, as soon as the Boulin wall got "injured" (IE melted down and had to be pulled), they folded like a fucking napkin.
if that hit is ok, then why have any rules about hitting? why not hit the goalie? he has pads. it should be legal to run that mother down. so long as we"re at it, eliminate the boarding call. boarding is for wimps.
that was not a hit to cause a turnover. that was a hit to punish the individual. if you think that is hockey, fine. simply understand that intelligent sportsmen do not agree. the purpose of the hockey check is physically force a turnover.
There are hits all the time to people without the puck.. Doesn't make it interference..
This type of possession call goes out the window when the player loses the puck in his skates..
Basically what you're saying that if the puck is in your skates and you don't touch it you cant be hit..
What about battles down low on the boards.. People get hit all the fucking time without the puck.. Just because you don't touch the puck doesn't mean you don't have possession.
"when the player loses the puck in his skates" HE DIDN'T LOSE THE PUCK, because he didn't have possession of it. The rule is in place to protect the players, the checking player has to make sure the guy actually touches it. It's the same in football when "pass interference" is called. You have to actually TOUCH IT !!!
In football, when a receiver is about to catch a ball, but is tackled before he could touch it, that's called "pass interference". This is no different. The rule is in place to protect the players. The checking player has to make sure the defender touches it, but doesn't. The rule book states this very clear. You don't seem to understand.
i understand 100%... In FOOTBALL.. If the ball is deflected AT anytime during a pass everybody is considered free game.
This is the same play.. Put hit off the boards.. Got lost in his skates.. Continued to skate forward to try and find with his head down and got clocked..
The intent to play was there.. And thats why there was no penalty until Dan O'Halloran noticed that Marty was laying on the ice counting sheep.
Can you say anything else?? Did Havlat touch the puck? No. Did he play the puck? Yes. Havlat intentionally lets the puck hit the boards to allow himself to break out of the zone faster than if he had caught it directly. You can even see him move his left skate in anticipation of touching the puck. THE PUCK IS HAVLAT'S. If Kronwall had decked him 0.3 seconds later, after he would have actually touched the puck, the result would have been the same, but your shallow argument wouldn't.
personally, i don't like the Red Wings, but I think Chicago was the team here that went unnecessarily over the edge.
#33, whoever that is, the guy who hit kronwall is a dumbass because when kronwall fell he could have hurt havlat worse than he already was..(like steve moore)
in my opinion, if you're going to retaliate for a clean hit that hurts your superstar because his head was down you should do it somewhere other than on top of him...
...Kronwall that are looking to completely traumatize that player to never touch a puck again. The refs would've just ignored the play if Havlat jumped right back up. It was unfortunate for Havlat though to have the puck go right under him and to be in the way of a train called Nicklas Kronwall. Glad to see he's okay and that the stretcher didn't have to come out.
I honestly don't understand why Kronwall got a penalty. Alright, so it was violent hit, but just because Havlat got the shit knocked out of him was no reason to give Kronwall a penalty. If any penalty was given it should've been ignorance on the ice to Havlat. Every offensive player should know by the time that they turn pro that they have to keep their head up becuase there will be people like...
This hit was completely legal all shoulder, and having the puck in your skates is considered possession at best it warrants 2 minutes for roughing but 5 and the game is bullshit. Also I'm unbiased in my opinion I'm a flyers fan and i don't care who wins this series
Anyone know what song starts at 2:27?

oswald31 2 years ago 3
The Hawks have a slim chance of coming back being down 3-1 heading back to Detroit. They had a great season & exceeded my expectations making it this far. They have a great young team. My only hope now is that they take the opportunity to avenge Havlat & hurt Detroit's chances by taking out a few Red Wipes on the way.
jmpjmpjmpjmpjmp 2 years ago
Wow...on the classiness level you rate around a 1...
Hoping for players to get hurt because your dumb Number 1 center didn't pick his head up???
dmccarthy37 2 years ago
are you kidding me....a red wings fan talking classiness. You can't be serious Detroit is one of the most classless teams in the NHL Fans included. You realize this hit had nothing to do with head up or head down. It had to do with Kronwall hitting a player before he obtained the puck
Kartracer6 2 years ago
this is true
steve0mac 2 years ago
the puck was under him if he would pay attention to where everything is
phldickinson 2 years ago
He had to get the puck....you can't hit a guy before he gets the puck...this is what it causes, a serious injury. He should have been suspended for this....but no the wings would cry about it and how they are getting "screwed" yet they suspended another player for having a mid ice collision and he gets 5 games. What a joke. That's ok the wings are on the downfall this year.
Kartracer6 2 years ago
i'll be honest, i don't know about the 5 game mid ice collision i can't argue that, but on this it was a very hard it, he got kicked out of the game, which might be the right call.but he didn't just hit someone to hit them the puck was under the guy he hit. he was trying to make a play.
phldickinson 2 years ago
I'm wondering how much of a play he is trying to make. Look at the video even before the puck hits the wall Kronwall is at full speed aiming at Havlat. Not once in this whole situation does he look down at the puck. He projectiles him self into Havlat and just completely cheap shots him. He hit him way to early and he even admitted to that. After hearing several of Kronwall's interviews anyway I'm starting to realize this guy's IQ level is very low.
Kartracer6 2 years ago
you say it is a complete cheap shot but if the puck had not taken a weird bounce off the boards havlat wouldn't have looked down at the last second and he would have seen the hit, its not kronwalls falt that havlat looked down
phldickinson 2 years ago
There was no weird bounce...Havlat was receiving the pass and Kronwall hit him early he had no intent to play the puck. It just helps redwing fans sleep at night when they use the excuse "he should have kept his head up" The play has nothing with keeping his head up. Kronwall hit him early and intensively. He was ejected for his actions and it should have resulted in a suspension and fine. Havlat played the game Kronwall made a stupid play.
Kartracer6 2 years ago
@Kartracer6 Nowhere in the rulebook does it say that you have to play the puck in order to deliver a hit. It's hockey and if you don't like devastating hits, REGARDLESS of who is involved, then go watch basketball.
jimmytango7 1 year ago
A “pick” is the action of a player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. A player who is aware of an impending hit, not deemed to be a legal “battle for the puck,” may not be interfered with by a player delivering a “pick.” A player delivering a “pick” is one who moves into an opponent’s path without initially having body position, thereby taking him out of the play.....
Kartracer6 1 year ago
@jimmytango7 (continued). When this is done, an interference penalty shall be assessed. Possession of the Puck: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. At what point in this video does Havlat touch the puck?
Kartracer6 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 Between his goddamn legs constitutes possession. You're in denial pal, CLEAN HIT. PERIOD!
jimmytango7 1 year ago
@jimmytango7 The rules state he has to touch it. I think I'll take the rules over your personal opinion. Sounds like your in denial. The refs caught it, the rules state it, the call was made. It's not a legal hit by any means. So unless you can supply a rule proving that between his legs is possession your wrong. PERIOD!
Kartracer6 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 I'm sorry man, but your nitpicking thru the rules. If Havlat wasn't completely motionless and unconscious, there would have never been a penalty called. I've played hockey competitively for the last 16 years of my life, not that that proves anything, but if the puck is in a guy's feet, he's fair game. It was the severity of the hit that resulted in the penalty, not the hit itself.
jimmytango7 1 year ago
@jimmytango7 First off yes it's sad that a injury makes a difference in a call or not. But that doesn't help your case it hurts it. It just shows the other calls not called are wrong. It's not nit picking. The rule is there to keep the guy safe. The reason for the motionless and unconsciousness is because an infraction took place. If you seriously think its ok to do this there is something seriously wrong with you. The hit it's self should always result in a penalty.
Kartracer6 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 Alright well, I'm not gonna get into a pissing match over a hit that took place two years ago, ya know. I agree with Olcyk's analysis of the hit, so you and I will just have to agree to disagree.
jimmytango7 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 but anyway, cheers to the best damn rivalry in sports, hopefully both teams stay competitive for many years to come!
jimmytango7 1 year ago
@jimmytango7 I'm not looking for a "pissing match". I've actually been waiting for a single person to explain to me what rule makes this hit legal? All I keep hearing is "if it's close it's legal" or "if it's under his legs it's legal" But it's like I ask for the rule and all I seem to get is people avoiding the question or making comments like "it's in the rule book but I'm not looking it up". I mean come on guys it's ok to look at this as a legal hit but at least defend your claim.
Kartracer6 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 well to be honest, i cant say with any certainty that theres a specific rule defending the circumstances. im just speaking from personal experience and literally thousands of games that ive watched. all i can say is that a puck in your feet, whether it's touched first or not, is USUALLY fair game for physical contact. ya know what im trying to say? like, the puck is within his person lol. i completely get your argument as well, but from my personal experience i have to disagree.
jimmytango7 1 year ago
@jimmytango7 No part of the rule makes this play right. Think about it a different way. The point of the rule was to protect the player from being hit while he is waiting to gain possession of a puck. Had Havlat gained possession he could have braced, if not avoided, the hit. Kronwall even states at one point he didn't know if Havlat had the puck. A rule of thumb taught to me was if you can't see the puck look at the players head, if it's down he most likely doesn't have possession yet.
Kartracer6 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 Also, I highly, HIGHLY doubt that the rulebook goes into this kind of detail regarding possession of the puck and/or hits in this situation. it's just such a random play the way the puck acts before the hit.
jimmytango7 1 year ago
@jimmytango7 Now don't get that comment confused. If his head is down and you can see the puck on his stick, then hit the guy, but if he is looking down and you can't figure out where the puck is or if it's been touched then odds are he has yet to gain possession. I see this call called inconsistantly I'll give you that. But in reality it's in the context of the rules and the officials called it for that reason.
Kartracer6 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 But yes, I do understand the rule you're referencing.
jimmytango7 1 year ago
kartracer shut your yapper,
it was no cheap shot the puck was right between his skates, if that isn`t possession of the puck you don`t know what you are talking about. the hit was perfectly timed and a taste of things to come for you hawks suckers once the 2010 playoffs start. go ahead count out the wings , this is what is going to happen to hossa this year.
sunshinestate0206 2 years ago
are you red wings really still crying about this...come on man I know you got nothing this year but seriously it's pathetic. It's text book penalty the call was right and he's just lucky he didn't get suspended for doing this. I'm right your wrong get over it....or do the hawks have to beat you 3-0 a third time for you to learn
Kartracer6 2 years ago
yeah and because it was textbook neither of the 4 freakin refs indicated penalty. watch the replay dimb bulb. There were no arms up at all.
Have fun living in denial of the truth havlat got bitchslapped!
btw nice 3-0 in the last game barely surviving a 4-3 SO. Beware the wings if they are healthy, its gonna get fuggly for the hawks

@Kartracer6 Your sarcasm here is fairly ironic, given that the hit took place in a series that the Hawks LOST 4-1.
Crymson1 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 In what way are the Wings the most classless in the league? They persistently take last place in the league in fighting majors, game misconducts and player suspensions. The last player for the Wings who could be considered even remotely a dirty player was Derian Hatcher, and he was on the team six years ago.
You're reaching.
Crymson1 1 year ago
@Crymson1 well figuring by the second round they had a hit count, penalty min count, and major penalty count that was higher then any of the 3 teams when those 3 teams where in the Conference finals. And by the end of the playoffs they lead hits by a massive amount 2nd most minor pen. 3rd most majors. And if you look in past years this trend continues. Classless fans starting fights at games...classless is written all over this one
Kartracer6 1 year ago
@Kartracer6 Your comment would mean a lot more if it were actually supported by any meaningful evidence or compelling arguments.
Crymson1 1 year ago
@Crymson1 Go look at the stats from last years playoffs....what more evidence do you need it's written in black and white. It doesn't get any more simple then that.

it was clean the puck was in his feet he did lead with the elbow but it hit havlat in the chest and if you actually watch the replay when its slowed down u can see his feet stay on the ice and only go up after havlat slides underneath him. The penalty was only called to please the hawks and defuse the situation

typical Redwings play. hitting with intent to injure. clear 5 min. He went for the player not the puck. Just a disgrace to hockey
Kartracer6 2 years ago

Yeah I mean I only played ice hockey for 14 years, what do I know. Also I was a ref myself for 2 years, for 15 yrolds by all means but I know the book. And that was a clean hit. In case you didn't notice he angles his skates so that the puck will come through, he saw it very well.

Kartracer6 2 years ago
Kartracer6-- "Typical Redwings play...hitting with intent to injure" LOL...No, the Wings are a skilled, puck posession team. The puck was UNDER Havlat, so Kronwall had to take Havlat off the puck. Go look up checking. No suspension from the league. Initially the refs did not call a penalty and only did so after seeing Havlat prone on the ice. They called Interference. Doesn't sound like the kind of penalty you get for an "intent to injure" hit, does it?
razrlazr 2 years ago
That would be the exact penalty I would see. He never played the puck he just went full out at havlat it was 100 percent with out a doubt intent to injure.
Kartracer6 2 years ago
You obviously don't understand the game of hockey so instead of blabbing away on here and making an idiot out of yourself, why don't you go watch a chess match or something. The Red Wings have a Stanley Cup to win.

No real argument here the rules state that

if that hit is ok, then why have any rules about hitting? why not hit the goalie? he has pads. it should be legal to run that mother down. so long as we"re at it, eliminate the boarding call. boarding is for wimps.
that was not a hit to cause a turnover. that was a hit to punish the individual. if you think that is hockey, fine. simply understand that intelligent sportsmen do not agree. the purpose of the hockey check is physically force a turnover.
inboundike 2 years ago
Dictionary... possession (definition) ...
A person has possession of something if the person knows of its presence AND has physical control of it.
Martin Havlat does NOT touch the puck, therefore has NO physical control of it.
LukeSchenn2 2 years ago
There are hits all the time to people without the puck.. Doesn't make it interference..
This type of possession call goes out the window when the player loses the puck in his skates..
Basically what you're saying that if the puck is in your skates and you don't touch it you cant be hit..
What about battles down low on the boards.. People get hit all the fucking time without the puck.. Just because you don't touch the puck doesn't mean you don't have possession.
04EsTi 2 years ago
"when the player loses the puck in his skates" HE DIDN'T LOSE THE PUCK, because he didn't have possession of it. The rule is in place to protect the players, the checking player has to make sure the guy actually touches it. It's the same in football when "pass interference" is called. You have to actually TOUCH IT !!!
LukeSchenn2 2 years ago
so he could've skated all the way up the ice with the puck in his skates and not be touched for it??? are you fucking kidding dude?
What is Kronwall supposed to do... Sit there and watch??? let him make a play with the puck..
Dude go listen to fucking hawks color Analyst eddie olczyk and the whole CBC crew.. Clean hit shouldn't even of been a penalty.
04EsTi 2 years ago

"What about battles down low on the boards.. People get hit all the fucking time without the puck.."
Great quote. Ofc you can hit players that hasnt actually touched the puck. When a player is covering the puck like this, he is in possession.
dave021 2 years ago
You mean pass interference can't be called if the receiver doesn't touch the ball?
commander778 2 years ago
Can you say anything else?? Did Havlat touch the puck? No. Did he play the puck? Yes. Havlat intentionally lets the puck hit the boards to allow himself to break out of the zone faster than if he had caught it directly. You can even see him move his left skate in anticipation of touching the puck. THE PUCK IS HAVLAT'S. If Kronwall had decked him 0.3 seconds later, after he would have actually touched the puck, the result would have been the same, but your shallow argument wouldn't.
