Choice has got to be a good thing, the metrocab was a good thing for drivers ,it cut out the monopoly of LTI,and made LTI improve their product ,it must have prompted the release of the best cab ever , the Nissan Fairway.
No vehicle is going to be totally reliable, even a Merc ,Mercedes has always been a class act though,so it's all about choice, personal choice .
Sadly cab drivers are their own worst enemy, our attitude will kill the cab game ,not the vehicles we drive.
I never said the turning circle was a gimmick, the mercedes is you idiot. why have something gimmicky when you can have black cab??. how reliable is it before it goes wrong and how expensive are they to repair so yes another gimmick trying to be a black hackney cab, theres only one real all purpose vehicle for taxiing thats lti. recognised the world over.
Let's hope that this new Merc cab will start the ball rolling to get the dreadful TX cabs off our roads for good, can you imagine the furore if the problems that cab drivers experience with this piece of crap occurred with Ford VW Volvo etc they would be out of business in months but because TFL have the monopoly they still feel that they can dictate to cabby's,the answer is staring you in the face, just don't buy their cabs ever again.
I am getting a Merc Taxi on Thursday to rent for 3 weeks. I will do a thorough video review when I have driven it a few days. In those 3 weeks I will have to decide whether to go for this or back to a TX4.
Oh man what has it come too! E7, Fiat, TW-200 and now a flaming merc! It was bad enough with the metro but ah well things change and it just needs to adjust
I'm French and London taxi enthusiast and second hand owner since around 25 years. I owned the old Austin, Rovers... and still own a Nissan Fairway Driver. I like also the TX1, but less the TX4. I heard about this intrusion of Merc'cab in the London streets and I'm sad because it's probably sign the final countdown of the iconic London Taxi. Shame !
You are correct this vehicle could ruin the Trade as we know it."It,s a cab Jim,but not as we know it".Addison Lee must be laughing like drains at our stupidity.
I work in the motor trade & have heard that merc are using the "taxi" platform so they can experiment & develop rear wheel steer for their regular cars & vans. So what will happen is in a few years time once merc have a complete & approved rear wheel steer system they will more than likely stop making the vito taxi just at the same time as Lti bring out their hybrid tx4 & say that there was a lack of sales etc. Well that's what I reckon.
Being able to carry more passengers is not good for the trade. LTI def. not perfect but the rest are poor immitations. I suppose once again we can thank the tree huggers for finishing off the Fairway/TX1 which had the best engine we've had since the old 2.5 Austin.
when the tx1 came out everyone said it wasnt a real london cab but look at it now ppl will get into anything. ive got a tx4 and it really is a piece of shit.lti have had it there way for to long i was at kpm last week and they recon they have sold over 100 new mercs. interesting times ahead
Simply Brilliant! Aside from the awesome turning circle it's great to finally have a taxi with more seats, more comfort and touch of class... Look forward to seeing them everywhere.
R.I.P. the london icon, i know that LTI need a kick up the backside, but if this becomes popular then the traditional london cab will be gone, dont see why mercedes couldnt work with LTI to produce a better cab, better interior and better engine and keep the original shape. as a london cabbie i wont be investing in one. sometimes a u turn has to be done quickly and in this cab you wont be able to do it as you have to virtually stop before starting the turn, i can hear the beeping horns now!!
Thanks for posting this video. I've been wondering about this new Mercedes Vito cab after I read an article about it in the newspaper last week. I'll bet KPM has great success offering these taxis as an alternative to the LTI TX4.
heathow drivers sleep in their cabs for 3 or 4 days?nights. that's why the cabs & drivers smell like shit & their wives are being shafte by blackmen!

Can they not design something more original and iconic than a Merc people carrier? What a load of rubbish!

What model Merc is that?

But this Merc looks shit, black cabs have class... they only need to improve the current taxi's chassis, not replace it entirely!

We should have that shit in NYC.

One word, gimmick.

It's not a gimmick, it's the law that London taxis have a certain maximum turning circle which is very small.
