Techniques are just that, techniques. Music comes from the soul and you can convey in on whaever instrument, in whatever medium, whatever way you choose to...
Being able to write something as incredible as these songs, then being able to play it, then play it so well with such emotion, then to play it in front of a huge crowd - solo - well, this guy is a genius.
Thanks for providing this one of kind view of Pat Metheny playing some of my favorite jazz pieces. And to hear and view his excellent acoustic guitar chops ... WOW! I'd love to hear a cd of his tunes but played acoustically only, sans electric. I only have one of his albums like that, New Chautaugua. I think that was his first album that turned my on to his genious artistry.
What is the name of this song!? So funny: I was noodling on my guitar a few days ago and "came up" with a figure that is almost precisely the same thing, and I kept thinking "boy, that sounds REALLY familiar, or I just came up with something awesome!" Mere chance brought me to this video, and DANG IT! Pat Metheny beat me to the punch decades ago! Ha!
@GRURusia i think you´re the one trying to seem intelligent, anyone with a normal size brain knows that music is relative, and "sucking" is just a matter of personal taste. this guy is very good as technique is refered, and if he is so aclaimed, that must mean something. by the way, i liked david lanz very much, listen to arvo pärt, you will love it.
Watercolors and Bright Size Life I think are my two favorite albums by him. Both of them are so amazing they flow so well. I could listen to them straight through 100 times and still love it as much as I did the first time I heard it.
Bonjour Monsieur Charcuterie (I am french) I love watercolors too. I have Bright size life too, it's boring (for me) . What other album than watercolors could you recommend to me. I love the poetic them, so could you please recommend to me some others album of Pat Métheny (or an other guitarist). Thank you so much.
there sure are a lot of great guitar players, i love this guy for his work ethic and heart and soul, so listenable, so flowing thoughts true to himself and beautiful
@jendelui This is so different to our great American ancestral music such as Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. It almost makes you believe behind all the invasions, killing, torture and terrorism America gives the world they have human beings out there. Thanks for posting.
Some of you critics might not be realizing that this performance is a medley of several popular PM tunes from his first two decades. Every fan in the audience knows these standards by heart. Pat's performance plays with listeners' expectations. He adds quick improvs and digressions, makes cool transitions and uses the blues/jazz tradition of moving his time ahead and behind the beat. In the flamenco tradition, that may be sloppy, but in jazz, it's groove & style and personal statement.
I listened to this again after commenting below. ----- It is fine... And I don't at all mean to offend anyone ---- But look up Paco de Lucia, or Tomatito... They absolutely tower above what is performed here...
If you spend any time at all observing and studying the hands of the great Spaniard, Paco de Lucia, this looks paaaaainfully like a guy who's struggling against himself.
I know Metheny's a 'giant' n'all, but his technique is sooooo inferior and sloppy compared to the REAL masters of nylon strung guitar.
@taraskovaliv hes def not struggling against himself, sure hes not as adept at the classical fingerstyle as paco but he is a brilliant composer and some of his music is the most complex music to play especially if you listen to the rhythms and time signatures he uses.
theres usually a guy who says what you say and then there is another guy who accuses the technically advanced musician of not playing with feeling, most just dont take the time to listen to the music
@dfairbanks06 So true! You should check out on Youtube First Circle, Minuano and other Metheny compositions performed by Pat with the Metropole Orchestra at the North Sea Jazz Festival. In some cases I prefer the orioginal PMG performances (e.g Pedro on vocals and Lyle on keys in First Circle) to the full orchestra versions but they're nonetheless all quite delightful.
@costanza69 they are the ones who THINK they play better than Pat Metheny. See, it's just a few who'r better than him (59 right now). time will move on and a few more may come! muhaahaha.. lol :)
He noodles eight notes together without playing with contour. He flat lines his volume. He is atrocious at accompaniment. He plays the chords, but seldom does he hear what the other soloists are playing. His tone sucks. He plays water-down jazz in the simplest form by fusing it with new-age and pop without adding flare to it. He reuses heads and themes in his improvisation and does not get out of a comfort zone in his improvisations. His improvisation sound composed.
It IS Phase Dance. He plays the main part of it for a few seconds before going into Minuano. Look at the setlist in the very beginning, the first song mentioned is Phase Dance...
Please inform me about the name (title) of the first piece (track) of this medley. I know it - for me it's one of the most beautiful melodies, but I don't remember its name - to track the original.

such a great combination between all pats influences, rock, jazz, country, classical, his emotion and mind to a great solo of showing us what hes thinking. and he did all that so smooth and clear. thank you pat!
3:01 WHAT IS THAT SONG? I heard it sampled in a beat once, but I never could find it. Now I stumble upon it, and even with the lsit at the beginning i'm having trouble.

@monkeyy992 Sounds to me like an acoustic medley of September Fifteenth and a piece he and Lyle wrote for Falcon and The Snowman. Listen to the tracks -- its there.

my guitar teacher studied under pat! pretty humbling to know that pat taught the guy who teaches me.

Hmm.. Segovia taught the guy who taught my guitar teacher - who also went to school with Jimmy Barnes... doesn't make me anything though :(
I turned down an autograph from the singer Darryl Cotton, he asked if I wanted one... I said 'Nah thanks'.. I bet he gets that a lot...

Try to focus on what he's playing rather than how he's playing that.

Wow... never heard this! Great post; I'm just awestruck. (48 dislikes? Who are they?) Huge life-long Pat fan, and this is treat.

Bad technique - my old guitar teacher would have killed me for playing with so much thumb creep LOL

@AlphaPegasii
