  • i hope heaven exist and you still play for us when we died Pat Metheny!

  • love the reference to Signe (Eric Clapton) in the opening

  • Techniques are just that, techniques. Music comes from the soul and you can convey in on whaever instrument, in whatever medium, whatever way you choose to...

  • Being able to write something as incredible as these songs, then being able to play it, then play it so well with such emotion, then to play it in front of a huge crowd - solo - well, this guy is a genius.

  • Thanks for providing this one of kind view of Pat Metheny playing some of my favorite jazz pieces. And to hear and view his excellent acoustic guitar chops ... WOW! I'd love to hear a cd of his tunes but played acoustically only, sans electric. I only have one of his albums like that, New Chautaugua. I think that was his first album that turned my on to his genious artistry.

  • what can i say... pure love. the message its the important.

  • What is the name of this song!? So funny: I was noodling on my guitar a few days ago and "came up" with a figure that is almost precisely the same thing, and I kept thinking "boy, that sounds REALLY familiar, or I just came up with something awesome!" Mere chance brought me to this video, and DANG IT! Pat Metheny beat me to the punch decades ago! Ha!

  • I love you PAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love to see him find an avenue to collaborate with Andy Statman

  • uaaaaaaaauh.

  • What is this piece called, I want to learn it so bad! =)

  • 64 dislikes ! must be Justin beiber fans :)

  • wish i knew what tuning this was!

  • @GRURusia i think you´re the one trying to seem intelligent, anyone with a normal size brain knows that music is relative, and "sucking" is just a matter of personal taste. this guy is very good as technique is refered, and if he is so aclaimed, that must mean something. by the way, i liked david lanz very much, listen to arvo pärt, you will love it.

  • @andmaci Arvo Pärt is from my home country, Estonia. I'm glad you like his music. And also, unbelieavable playing by Pat here :)

  • @kristerkr you must be proud man! such a talent coming from your land. keep on enyoing music, that´s what is all about! cheers.

  • Is this one of his songs or an improvisation?

  • Watercolors and Bright Size Life I think are my two favorite albums by him. Both of them are so amazing they flow so well. I could listen to them straight through 100 times and still love it as much as I did the first time I heard it.

  • Bonjour Monsieur Charcuterie (I am french) I love watercolors too. I have Bright size life too, it's boring (for me) . What other album than watercolors could you recommend to me. I love the poetic them, so could you please recommend to me some others album of Pat Métheny (or an other guitarist). Thank you so much.

  • there sure are a lot of great guitar players, i love this guy for his work ethic and heart and soul, so listenable, so flowing thoughts true to himself and beautiful

  • @jendelui This is so different to our great American ancestral music such as Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. It almost makes you believe behind all the invasions, killing, torture and terrorism America gives the world they have human beings out there. Thanks for posting.

  • Wow! 64 dislikes,,,Unbelievable!....there are some people in this world who truly need help!

  • He has to be an alien. There's not enough emotion in the world to create this kind of music.

  • this guy looks just like mel gibson with big hair! ;D

  • 2:43 - 2:44 . Its just so... aaah

  • Ah man! That is simply beautiful! Thank you for posting.

  • This song is a compilation of other. Names, there is the start.

  • what is the name of this song!?

  • this is not america instrumental sounds amazing. wish I knew the tuning

  • Some of you critics might not be realizing that this performance is a medley of several popular PM tunes from his first two decades. Every fan in the audience knows these standards by heart. Pat's performance plays with listeners' expectations. He adds quick improvs and digressions, makes cool transitions and uses the blues/jazz tradition of moving his time ahead and behind the beat. In the flamenco tradition, that may be sloppy, but in jazz, it's groove & style and personal statement.

  • He is pretty good but I still think Kenny G is better.

  • I listened to this again after commenting below. ----- It is fine... And I don't at all mean to offend anyone ---- But look up Paco de Lucia, or Tomatito... They absolutely tower above what is performed here...

  • If you spend any time at all observing and studying the hands of the great Spaniard, Paco de Lucia, this looks paaaaainfully like a guy who's struggling against himself.

I know Metheny's a 'giant' n'all, but his technique is sooooo inferior and sloppy compared to the REAL masters of nylon strung guitar.

  • @taraskovaliv hes def not struggling against himself, sure hes not as adept at the classical fingerstyle as paco but he is a brilliant composer and some of his music is the most complex music to play especially if you listen to the rhythms and time signatures he uses.

theres usually a guy who says what you say and then there is another guy who accuses the technically advanced musician of not playing with feeling, most just dont take the time to listen to the music

  • @CaptainGill1 Excellent response to taraskovaliv!

  • @taraskovaliv so true!!!

  • you could arrange any of these songs for a full orchestra and it would sound absolutely incredible

  • @dfairbanks06 So true! You should check out on Youtube First Circle, Minuano and other Metheny compositions performed by Pat with the Metropole Orchestra at the North Sea Jazz Festival. In some cases I prefer the orioginal PMG performances (e.g Pedro on vocals and Lyle on keys in First Circle) to the full orchestra versions but they're nonetheless all quite delightful.

  • WOW faso! What artists are you listening to that sound so good? I would like to listen to them too.

  • Come on. This sounds like every other guy with an acoustic guitar.

  • His guitar is like a 3rd arm on him. Brilliant...

  • GRACIAS POR TU MUSICA, OJALÁ ALGÚN DIA TENGA LA POSIBILIDAD DE CUMPLIR EL SUEÑO DE ESCUCHARTE EN VIVO. CONCEPCIÓN-CHILE

  • how is it possible that 59 people disliked this?

  • Where's the melody from that first song from? Another song from Pat?

  • @Omnitica Yeah, it was from Phase Dance.

  • Pat's pretty much a God when it comes to guitarists

  • @50ISIO Pat is better just with the composition, and when it comes to play, it's just another style..

  • Beginning sounds like "oh susanna" 1:00

  • Comment removed

  • the first song is minuano 6/8 and them the first circle. this is not America.

  • Where the hell is the repete button ?

  • The name of the first song?

  • Son varias canciones unidas

  • This song have a name ? :o

  • The Pat's hair is beatifull as his hands.

  • Why is it that I can be having the worst day, and then I listen to this and the world seem right again?

  • there´s something seriously wrong with the people who dislike this.

  • @costanza69 they are the ones who THINK they play better than Pat Metheny. See, it's just a few who'r better than him (59 right now). time will move on and a few more may come! muhaahaha.. lol :)

  • Is this from a DVD ? Anyone know the name ?

  • Legendary jazz guitarist PAT METHENY recalls his performance at an ill-equipped Italian soccer stadium. Read more at The Worst Gig (WorstGig.com).

  • liquid music.

great crowd too. no 'woo hoo in the middle' morons.

  • What's with Frech people and Pat Metheny???? You and your shite rock music!

  • Aww this is just what I needed for a Sunday morning .

  • How can so much music come out of one guitar

  • It IS Phase Dance. He plays the main part of it for a few seconds before going into Minuano. Look at the setlist in the very beginning, the first song mentioned is Phase Dance...

  • do tabs exist for what he is playing?

  • @areopagita Phase Dance

  • Please inform me about the name (title) of the first piece (track) of this medley. I know it - for me it's one of the most beautiful melodies, but I don't remember its name - to track the original.

  • @areopagita1 Is not Phase dance, the firt piece is the main melody of Minuano

  • what songs/parts does this melody consist of? beautiful

  • i learned from mr metheny that you can use the thumb on the RH. Five digits is better than four

  • Comment removed

  • I love this. It's not overly showy or busy jazz or necessarily straight classical. It's just cool.

  • 57 people do not know what is the music

  • Is this improvisation?

  • @Inyourfacepunk no, its a medley

  • 9 listopada zagra w Warszawie (PKiN). Info z fajnej strony Go4That.eu

  • peddick...you are actually ADMITTING that you "helped" him with his hair?

It was after this video was shot right?...'cause it looks like it hasn't been "helped" in about 5 years in the video. Pat should take a day off and just get a hair cut....short hair didn't hurt Clapton!

  • @lowell3333 Clapton had cut hair as old man

  • I just love this version of these great pieces. Clear, crisp, poignant, tender, lilting, I can't say enough about this music except that I am profoundly grateful for the posting here on YouTube for us all to share.

Thank You so much for posting!

  • Some of the high speed players should listen...here is soul and blue mood on a high level ...

  • @lastsinger I always thought pat's playing was more purple and orange with hints of lime green than blue

  • what kind of guitar is this?

  • I'm the guy who does Pat's hair.

Before cutting hair I used to work in Mr. Metheny's gardens until someday he asked me to help him with his hair.

    This man changed my life.

    I love you señor Metheny.

  • Very nice peddick. Like it ! Great look !

    FM

  • @peddick LMAO

  • @peddick thats great stuff... i dont know why i dont have all his music. i happen to truly love this piece ... i think Pat is greatest living composer , guitar player and could be a great person ... Live on Pat you are so special...Thanks for posting this beauty

  • @peddick Don't cut his hair! He might get rubbish at guitar..... Don't risk it. Just mess about with it for 20mins then charge him $50. Seems to have worked for the last 30years

  • @peddick Well, nice job, peddick !

And great music from Pat Metheny. He has been my favorite modern jazz guitarist for years.

Thank you for your music, Pat !!

  • I am doing a version of that incredible meddley.

  • too bad the video is a little late from the audio

  • Does everyone know that Pat Metheny's new acoustic solo album What's It All About released today June 14, 2011? First time in 40 recordings he is doing brilliant interpretations of 10 classic songs. Go check it out!

  • I do not know if this is a "maximum" only in the country where I live, but; there are people who say there is no music that is really good today.

Ps.: sorry my english, i'm brazilian.

  • He's the best. Absolutely beautiful.

  • Outstanding medley of his best songs!

  • @neyetroglys

would you mind telling us the one's you've already figured out? :) thank you

  • looks like carrottop ...

  • Timeless, excellent. Never gets old. Thank creation for Pat Metheny. Feel free to correctly think of him as the Master.

  • Pat was a surfer too!

  • @MrNotyag he's obviously insane. Ignore him lol

  • @ALLOFMYLOVE4U

we got no soul? How insensitive...

  • @ALLOFMYLOVE4U Well perhaps some people like soulless music... Nothing wrong with that. Maybe it isn't jazz...that's ok too.

    Oh well...

  • @ALLOFMYLOVE4U I'm a pseudo intellectual soccer mom?

  • @ALLOFMYLOVE4U I never knew I had kids.

  • pat has crap hair so he can blend in with us ordinary mortal people more easily when he comes down from the heavens to walk amongst us

  • I love Pat's music, so honest it comes through his fingers - I used to listen to this song all the time, it is so beautiful

  • Comment removed

  • what piece is he playing ?

  • @monkeyy992 Minuano 6/8

  • @geoffpeterstrio thank you my friend

  • @geoffpeterstrio i want the tab of this song so bad. If u have it please share xD

  • @rauteu2 transcribe it . . .

  • @rauteu2 @PraneetMervin thanks I don't have it, but yes you could try transcribing it, a good practice and way to learn. to help there are some software programs (check out "transcribe" by seventh string software) that will slow down the music without changing the pitch, which may aid transcribing.

  • MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • my guitar teacher studied under pat! pretty humbling to know that pat taught the guy who teaches me.

  • @IJmackdaddy

Hmm.. Segovia taught the guy who taught my guitar teacher - who also went to school with Jimmy Barnes... doesn't make me anything though :(

I turned down an autograph from the singer Darryl Cotton, he asked if I wanted one... I said 'Nah thanks'.. I bet he gets that a lot...

  • Try to focus on what he's playing rather than how he's playing that.

  • Wow... never heard this! Great post; I'm just awestruck. (48 dislikes? Who are they?) Huge life-long Pat fan, and this is treat.

  • @derSpuk
