I used to ride on the sidewalks, but the past year I've ridden on the street, and if you ride properly with the flow of traffic its much safer then riding on the sidewalks. Now if i ride on a sidewalk I feel very uneasy. There always seems to be a car pulling right out in front of you when your on the sidewalk. oh and btw Ive only ever been hit riding on a sidewalk.
what about smallkids, are they allowed to (or even have to, to a certain age) use the sidewalk, like in Germany (I think unitl your 8, you have to´, from 8 to 10 you can choose between sidewalk and street, and older than 10 you have to use the stree (or if there is one, the bikelane). btw: in Germany there's no law any more, that bike rider s have to dismount on pedestrian ways, because they would need more space walking neyt to their bike ^^)
i just ride on sidewalk. I cant go on street cuz damn drivers are crazy. I was riding so close to the right lane cars and the stupid car still skinned me. Id rather confront the police than to get myself killed. I do slow down like hell when I am near ppl tho
This is BS I've been riding my bike on sidewalk since Kindergarde, because my mom and dad said, " no we can't go on the street just on the side walk, but now you can't ride on side walk any more? I was 6 I was freaken 6 and my bide had training wheels Are you freaking kidding me? are you freaken kidding me? Whatsnext whatsnext whatsnext!!??
The only way to make things better for cyclists is to follow the laws, ride in the middle of the lane, blocking any car from trying to drive faster than 10 mph. Eventually the city will make lanes for cyclists that they can actually use without pissing people off and breaking the law.
I understand it's against the law but wouldn't really say anything because what these bicyclists are doing is great for the environment by choosing not to drive a car. If they want to use the sidewalk for casual riding then so be it. All I know is that in Massachusetts it isn't against the law to ride a bicycle in a cross walk on on a street.
this is so effin stupid they use the sidewalk kuz they dont want to be ran over have u noticed where there riding bikes?? in san francisco and alot of people have been ran over on city streets so sht i would do the same thing and ride my bike on the sidewalk it beats the hell outta gettin run over
@charlie990 No, you are not screwed.... you're traffic! You ride in the traffic lanes and motor vehicles are SUPPOSED to treat you as they would another motor vehicle. Since they DONT ACTUALLY do that there are critical mass demonstrations every year where bicyclists bombard traffic and cause general mayhem as a way of getting the point across that they ARE part of traffic.

aka. If you feel like you're getting unsafely close to dooring range of parked cars by cars passing on your left, take the full lane. It may annoy the drivers behind you, but it makes you safer and a more visible part of traffic.

most bikers in Philly aren't allowed in Philly to ride on the sidewalks either, but most seem to follow the rules, and it's not heavily enforced.

Where in the CVC does it say that folding bikes are allowed to be ridden on the sidewalk? Is there even a description in the CVC for folding bikes?

Of course there will be crackdowns on cyclists. The MAN needs to sell his OIL. And the man owns everyone. Even the police.

Bike lanes arn't safe so I understand this problem.

Give us a dedicated lane and you have your sidewalk back.

The problem is education. They're not ignoring the law more than they don't KNOW the law.
I know plenty of bikers who have been messed up biking in roads, but I've NEVER heard of anyone getting hurt by a bike on a crosswalk or sidewalk.

Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.

A lot of bike riders complain about automobile drivers, but then they break those same laws that they complain drivers break.

I don't see why you can't ride on a sidewalk? Then where can you? If there is no bike lanes your screwed.
