im sure this loco would start at -20c as well. This loco had not been started for over two weeks so it did well to start at all given the batteries had not had a charge it that time.
-1 is an hot start in the alps. Diesel engine can start easily at -20C. probably your elec pre heating of injectors is fucked up. However really nice video.
that was a cold start for a diesel the way that smoke is , even without below freezing teperatures , anything with glow plugs and not using them to start first time for the day will do that , cars , lorries , buses , locomotives
@Rotron9573 yes, chicago. in case you are not aware chicago is in america.. not england where the climate is ever so slightly DIFFERENT. get your head out of your arse.
I am talking about very cold or very hot weather here. For example one time I took my Land Rover out during a very cold snowy night, to visit my brother. That biatch quit in the middle of nowhere. Engine just quit working. Some kind of temperature sensor caused it. Almost froze to death. Before that, a transmission quit in the middle of the busy highway. So yeah, they love to pick the wrong place and time to quit working.
It's cold. It can snow a 0 F, which is about -10 C. And I work here in Wisconsin for the RR. We have plug in oil and fuel heaters for our engines. But with out them, you can can have breakfast while you start it and hope it's running by lunch time! lol!
@Jokk3asd If we had sub-zero temperatures and snow all winter we'd be prepared to go to work too, but as even in the worst winters it's only a few days a year that there is any real trouble it's not worth investing in the infrastructure.
@alderaforall Sounds like you're a troll who has taken the term 'having no life' to such an extent that you watch videos of trains starting, trying to pick a fight.
@alderaforall Goodness, that was a fast response. Nothing better to do?
The difference sir, is that your comment was intended to insult anyone from a certain country, it was designed as an attention seeking device, 'ooh look how popular I am, someone I don't know has messaged me!' etc etc. In other words, you made your message for the sole reason of angering people. My comment was aimed at only one moron...
@lazaglider no my message was not intended to insult anyone but to point out that -5c isn't that cold and sure as hell doesn't hold water as a good reason to not go to work. You suffer from a case of assumptionitis. You're calling me out yet you're doing the EXACT thing you're crying about. You want some attention and here I am stroking your poor fragile ego. You big baby.
@CaptYanknBank Only when it's that cold... Any diesel, new or old will behave like that when it's that cold. The fuel is cold, the oil is cold, the moving parts are cold, and those engines are massive, so they take an age to warm up enough.
I watch this video sometimes... I can't explain what I feel, but its the same way you get when you walk outside at 7:00am and its a fresh snow, with moonlight or streetlights gleaming off it, its silent, you know the drive will be slow and relaxing, your car is covered with 4 inches, and you get inside and fire it up... Knowing in a few that you will be warm.
I remember there was one class of engine that could not be shut down , if left in a siding for a few days . The engine had to be left running . It was todo with not carrying enough battery power ?
...the smell of diesel exhaust in the morning...is...the smell of...a nice warm cab to stay inside of! Pity the conductor and switch-man... oh yeah, the smell of a lit kerosene-lamp, too... ...they're, mystic.
@IIJG27RichTry telling a Scottish/Irish/Welsh person that they are British due to the fact that they live in the British Isles !!! you would get more than a hockey stick in your head.
I have wondered that as on cold weather these "wake up" cylinder by cylinder, is it possible, that one cylinder hydrolocks by unburned diesel fuel before it ignites within safe marginal? Haven't heard of such though.
@NesteHukka2 No, the injector does not spray enough to causr hydrolock, since the fuel get blown out from the exhaust cyckle.
It will take huges amount of fuel to cause this, if you think of the wolume in the combustion chamber ( the hole in the piston ) and the litle spray of fuel some 200mg/stroke on this kind of engine
In the end, the old girl started: the smoke changed colour. In the US, we don't run anti-freeze in our locomotives, so once it gets down to freezing (32* or 0*, take your pick) the engines arn't shut down.
@dirtTdude Because antifreeze, if it boils, forms a coagulant which is flammable. The Ladbroke Grove Class 43 had antifreeze in its system and after the crash it caught fire.
Hey 36 is cool i remember tenting in -36C in the military, but we we had stoves in the tents though.
