  • Thank you Fred Sokolow for presenting this so clearly and attainably, you have a gift, thank you for so generously sharing it with us. I'm inspired! I've always wanted to get this song down, but never got the real feel for it til now:-)

  • Fantastic!! Love that you sing through entirely, then explain, then do the split screen always consistent. Makes it easy to rewind to repeat technique segments, or just to hear your great rendition. Thanks again!!

  • Found this guy through Stefan Grossman

Great Teacher. Leaves nothing to chance.

Very Good teacher. Order his Teaching material it is awesome

  • Great lesson, I've just ordered 4 books by this master of picking. I am sure that i will learn a lot with him but... damned... understanding American spoken will be a channenge for a French dude.

    Greetings from France

  • This is a fantastic version of a hybrid between Cash's playing and the backing of The Tennessee Two...FANtastic lesson, my good sir.

  • thanks for posting.....I can learn what i've been wanting too from this !

  • To all the people pointing out that this isn't how Cash played it: The title of this DVD is "The Music of Johnny Cash for Fingerpicking Guitar". It's fingerpicking arrangements of Cash songs, it's not supposed to be exactly how Cash played. A DVD solely about how Cash played isn't necessary. Just look up the damn chords.

  • lol. This is good, but not how Cash played it. Cash was not this "good" of a player, He just strummed the chords

  • A very good and detailed lesson, but I must say that Fred does have some incorrect elements in his technique.

  • Excellent lesson-thanks so much.

  • I'd give one of my nuts to be able to play like that.

  • This is right up there with the Dead's version.

  • I am most envious of the Fred talent.....must practice this one much more. Thanks for a great lesson

  • Good stuff.

  • @hypatiaful: You're an idiot. This is awesome.

  • @hypatiaful

are you sane ? this guy a great instructor and and a great player.

  • this guy can play the gitter

  • nice lesson now to transfer it into a flatpicking style

  • Incase you are unaware of Fred's talent, there's nothing he can't play, flatpick, fingers, nothing matters. He is an incredible musician.

  • yes you are right I ment for me to transfer sorry for the misunderstanding

  • First time ive ever seen this guy, but you can tell he is an excellent guitar player.

  • TU SI QUE SABES, MAN!!!

  • Very Cool!

  • Excellent...Inspires me to keep playing

  • Your voice is not the best, but the guitar work is excellent!

  • Fred is the man...i have lots of his DVD's..and forget he used to open for the Dead all the time! Fred Rocks!

  • cool

  • very nice version. I like this smooth beat

  • You did that song justice. Johnny must be grinning right now. R.I.P. Mr. Cash

  • nice played, my compliments

  • it still amazes me, how those who can do..and those who can't, like to put up stupid comments..how many of you know alls can actually put a few chords together..Nice one Fred..

  • great version, thanks fred

  • forgot to mention it. listen to the dead do this song. TOTALLY different. and its no less relevant.

  • to all you you , uh, MORONS, ya just dont get music in general, do ya? this is a killer arrangement, and dont you think for one minute that a song has to be played exactly like it was originally recorded. thats disrespectful to the original. take the song somewhere else. would you dis a metal version of this song? why?

  • Rubbish!!!

This is how it should be done.

In the key of who gives a fuck!

  • nice! (and wrong? I prefer different) Thanx for the lesson!

  • Thanks.

  • Yes i know that, but this is from the dvd where he teaches Johnny Cash songs... but he plays the guitar wrong.

  • It's all wrong.. te lyrics and the guitar played.

  • I doesn't matter if the lyrics are not exactly the same as the original. Even Johnny Cash singed his songs with alternative lyrics.

  • Dear Fred, thank you for your laid back and informative guitar lessons. I only have dial up and it takes a while to download, but is worth the wait. not many people are doing open d tuning lessons, that is what I want to learn so THANK YOU and hoping you do some more songs in open d tuning. I am on myspace user name Ziffadee, I plan to join you tube when I get a dvd camera, for now am just enjoying learning from your videos !!

  • hey, awesome video, thanks

i'm a rock/ metal guitarist stuck in what you call "a rut" and im learning country music to get myself out of it, and by god it's working so well.

    thanks again

  • Great stuff right here! Really good teacher, love the split-screen as well. Thanks alot <3

  • He taught the weepin' willow how to cry. Noice!

  • nice nice nice....thank you

  • Great teacher.

  • Excellent lesson. thanx for taking the time to demo all those different techniques.
