Had my father not introduced me to this (via Nazi) I would have lost out so ever so much. I don't think that any music collection could ever be filled without this song. Such wonderful lyrics, such wonderful meaning, such an addictive tune.
This song is about how everyone (all people of different races, sex, and ages) must stand up for their rights, protest, and fight for what they believe in. Hence "timebomb" meaning that people have power in numbers and will inevitably stand up to oppose whatever they disagree with (ie government / corporations) when they infringe on their rights. In the booklet notes for this song it quotes Lennon, "Come Together" and mentions tax riots and riots in SF post Rodny King verdict.
At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality.
You're not ridiculous at all. Too many things to write on this subject and too little time, anyway I think I know what you mean and I absolutely agree.
I think passionately hating others is more important than loving someone in revolution. Revolutions are violent bloody struggles. Love doesnt do shit in freedom struggles . Look at that asshole Gandhi who said same shit. Because of him British stayed here till 1947. If there had been violence.. man.
@GreenDay1981 Yeah, they only came here when "Tubthumping" was a hit. They were quite disturbed to find audiences full of seven year olds, when much of their older material wasn't kid friendly. Needless to say, "Home Alone 3" caused that... But because of that song (and their reputation as a one hit wonder here), they won't be back, sadly.
@NyeTunes They actually toured north america a few times before Tubthumping, but very rarely since. There's an interview with them in Maximum Rock & Roll in 1991 about a US tour they were doing at the time.
@NyeTunes Hey kid friendly is a relative term. This is the stuff my parents played in the car when i was 5. I knew most of the lyrics off by heart. They had to warn me not to repeat them in front of my grandparents.
The first time I hears this song was at the Heineken Festival in Brighton in 1993 (with the Levellers headlining). I dropped acid for the first time ever, and I was tripping my nuts off when they were playing this song. They were absolutely bloody brilliant, and this song is a classic - wherever your head is.
well done for saving the vid. A brilliant tune by a brilliant band and as ever original :) Thanks, I have some home movie footage of them live in whitby and Beverly cathedral a few years ago, will try to get it off my broken hard drive and post it.
Here's the exact quote from the band's official site: "Chumbawamba doesn't mean anything. At the time we formed (early 80's) there was a rush of bands with obvious names. It was the time of 'peace punk' and you couldn't get across a youth club dance floor without bumping into a Disorder, a Subhumans, a Decadent Youth or an Anthrax t shirt. We liked the sound of Chumbawamba because it wasn't nailing ourselves down."
I prefer the jimmy echo live version. I got into chumbawamba after coming across a band called sportchestra, some of the members of chumbawamba were in it i think. The album was called '101 songs about sport' and it was exactly that, 101 short songs about sport, some of them are hillarious. Someone told me the album is very rare, is this true? Does anyone have any more info on this band known as sportchestra?
I like this song but I get the feeling that Chumbawumba arent too bothered with it. Its actually quite deep in that we all put up with so much crap from people who control us!
they sell some of their albums here in england, but not the album with this song on, which is the album i want, looks like i will have to buy off the internet or search in old music shops.
Great to see this back, though the image is grainy.A romantic/humorous and provokative look at People.Nostalgic stand from the sunglasses of the singing donna.
I heard she wanted to focus on writing. I don't know how being part of Chumbawamba kept her from doing that, but I guess it did. I hope it won't be a permanent thing. I'd like to see her back with the band eventually.
