It'd be very unusual for the lion to eat the hyena cub. Lions kill hyenas regularly but find their meat extremely unpalatable.
Seems a lot of folks don't know that lions (a) aren't such great hunters, with a success rate of not much more than 30% and (b) steal hyena kills more often than vice versa. ((b) goes with not knowing that hyenas hunt at all, and succeed 60% of the time.). But the best predator is the wild dog, with a whopping 90% and greater success rate.
But just as the lion steals from the hyena, both the lion and hyena steal from the wild dog. Seems that even in nature being a thug pays better than working hard and smart—and a wild dog hunt is really something to behold, even if only on video (my case) with amazing precision and cooperation. It's as if the dogs can read each others minds...
The wild dog also is the most altruistic of predators, always reserving something from a kill for the young and the injured and sick—of their own pack.
@ed2kou1 they are nomadic males, which means they have no tribe. no tribe=no protection and no food that lionesses hunt for. but it's a good thing they formed a coalition with each other, and at least he got some hyena meat at the end.
