Hey nice vid, and i've got the "sector 9 black ball ceramic" bearings but they've basicly stopped spinning, will bones speed cream fix them or do i have to get a new set? thanks
dude totes just bought my first board, got rush apec 5 bearings but the wheels are kinda loose, so i tightened them up but it stopped the wheels spinning freely what do i do?!?!
They wont clean themselfs dude. You have to get some plyers or w.e. Theyre called and taped the dirt out of them and keep doing it to all of them till no dirt comes out after tapping it againts the bowl...
I was disassembling everything off my board and when I went to grab one if my bearings I had taken off, it basically fell apart and all seven ball bearings fell of from out if it... Please help!!
"put it back on and prey it off" a sure way to remove your truck threds....resulting in a 40mph+ skin scraping slide session!....use a screwdriver not your trucks!!
@wavecreatures Thanks for the comment, but take a physics class in high school before commenting on my videos. It wont strip the threads because the bearing doesn't move at all while prying it out.
p.s. also, take an English class while you're there, learn some grammar and sentence structure
@MichaelRoncoHornby Sorry but there is no need to insult me....over a period of time the camber/chamfered edge of the bearing is going to wear the thread out. Besides I'm an engineer. I was just making a polite suggestion, maybe a screwdriver is a better option than your truck. I really don't think there is any need to be condescending. Best Regards Phil Steadman
@MichaelRoncoHornby when hitting the bearing against the bottom of the bowl do you hit the side with the balls showing towards the bottom or hit the otheer side facing towards the bottom
This is the BEST tutorial! Thanks! Whoever put a thumbs down for this video is a dumb ***! You explain everything better than any other video i've seen!
so this is the first time im cleaning my longboard bearings. My rubber shileds were a pain in the ass to remove and i noticed that 2 or three of my bearing had rust on them. also a friend of mine had told me each time he came back from boarding, he would wash the outside of his bearing to prevent rust. would you recomend that this works? one more thing, i should clean bearing every 2-3 months, correct?
I thought that if you have bearing spacers, you can fully tighten the wheel and not have to worry about adjusting it?? I'm so confused, somebody help me please!
Wayyyyyyyyy back in the day I lost a few washers so now I have one on each wheel. I ride about an hour a day and will this affect anything on my board negatively?
@carlosvg1986 I used to have those bearings (I just got the bones super Swiss sixs the other day) and on the back it is a little bit more indented. Hope my comment helped
if i fuck up my bearings im going to see you in court. loljk...it is just that ive had a bad experience with putting bearings in my first time "i did something terribly wrong", now it is time to clean the ones i have
i got loaded jehu bearings and the shield is like irremovable. theres a metal washer on the inside of the bearing that i cant get out, and on the one broken bearing i have, the shield itself is too flush on the bearing walls to pry out. what do i do?????
@TheMclovin781 about the trucks, 145mm trucks are really small, so I'm just assuming you're a skater not a longboarder. In this case, yes, they will fit. I'm not much of a skater, but I do know that having the trucks a little bit smaller than the board is better, and having larger trucks that stick out would be awkward.
As for the bearings, I'd recommend the swiss 6, but again, personal choice. The reason I'd go with swiss 6 is because the labyrinth shield doesn't do it's job very well
@MichaelRoncoHornby what if the bearings start squeaking when i ride, it sounds like a little rock is in the bearings idk am new to longboarding help me out here
Probably THE BEST step to step guide on how to un assemble clean and re assemble skateboard bearings!!! Thanks man you answered every question that popped in my head!!
doesn't soaking in rubbing alcohol rust them? i read on silverfish that it does and you should use something like kerosene to soak them to clean them and then the rubbing alcohol to remove the kerosene. then use the lube to lube it up.
@Fearlessnippz Well it will rust the bearings if you use alcohol with too much water. I use 99% alcohol so there's only a tiny bit of water, and I've never had any rusting issues. I recommend 99% but anything around 80-99% would work.
@11xXDANIXx11 well, if they are both rubber shields, then just take both of them off.
If they are metal shields, you might not be able to take them off. There are 2 kinds of metal shield bearings: crimped and c-ring. The C-ring bearings have a sealing ring around the rim that keeps the shield on, you just have to take out the ring out with a pin or knife.
If they're crimped, they will have little notches around the rim. You cant clean orre-lubricate these.
@fsxdave24 wd40 causes more problems than it solves. It may seem like its working, but it can damage your bearings. All it does is push the dirt around but it never really gets rid of it. It does leave behind a light lubricating oil as it evaporates, but as long as there is still dirt inside, it will just end up turning to sludge in no time.
hey i got the same bearings. when i cleaned mine and put on the shields
theres this rubbing sound when i spin it. the sound wasnt there when i spin the bearing without the shield. i thought it might be the shields rubbing against the bearings
do you get the same sound or is your bearing totally quiet?
@crapatguitar yeah mine are totally quiet. some things to check for:
make sure that the lip of the shield is in all the way around the bearing (meaning the little piece of rubber is tucked in)
check to see if you accidentally bent the shield when taking it off/ putting it back on. just put it on a flat surface, if it's bent, you'll know. be very gentle with them, if you have to bend it back, do it in very slight increments. overbending it will ruin it.
Thanks for the video, I only needed the last half of putting the wheels on because i'm getting a new board and i have to install the wheels myself. And I had no clue how to, but now I do, thanx a but load. By the way, i'm getting a Hybrid Downhill Carbon & Fiber longboard.
hey stupid question but does it matter which side the washers go on, like if I accidentally take them off and put them on upside down will anything bad happen?
@brandoncormac I'm not too sure what you mean. The washers are the same on both sides, so no it doesn't matter which way you put them on. If that answers your question?
@brandoncormac I absolutely love them. I've had mine for about a year now, and they're still in great shape! As long as you take care of them, they should last you a long time, I think I can get another year or 2 out of these
@MichaelRoncoHornby i think he was talking about the bearing at 6:55 beacause i'm asking the same question if it's what he mean ?! so does it matter wich side ?!
@0corby i don't really know what you mean by this. if you're asking which way the bearing faces, the rubber shield on the bearing should always face out, and if there is shields on both sides then it doesn't matter. if you're talking about the spacer i put in at 7:35, it goes in the center, so it doesn't matter when you put it in as long as it goes in the center of the wheel at some point
I started out sliding on them. its really hard though cause they are very soft wheels, but once you get the hang of slides it gets easier. honestly though, get some slide wheels. i have O'tang stimulus, and they slide really nicely
Methylated spirit, or surgical spirit are other names for isopropyl alcohol. It evaporates very quickly, compared to kerosene, If you havent got rid of all the solvent, your fresh lube will be much less effective.
i only started to actually clean my bearings when i started buying the higher-end ones...
what i used to do with my old abec 5 bearings was put some bicycle teflon into the small space between the shield and the inner race (just a few drops of it) and then spin the bearing between my fingers. it cleans and lubricates, and i managed to make them last for a solid year and a half...
Hmm what exactly do spacers do? I have Cell Swiss Ceramic Black V1 bearings and my frinds keep saying I should put spacers in but they ride perfect without them.
man i dont care about washing my bearings just because i have some bones reds i just pop the sheild off and set to skate and i leave the side wear the sheild was the outside of the wheel so when i ride most of the dirt well get of my bearings
you should probably buy a bearing-specific lubricant....
when i first got into longboarding i had no idea about how to clean my bearings, so i used to just put a few drops of bicycle teflon in each one... it works, but i wouldn't recommend it based on experience
and speed cream is a bearing lubricant. it makes the bearings roll faster with less wear. it reduces the friction between the ball bearings and the inner/outer races. you can use any kind of bearing lubricant, it doesn't have to be speed cream, but speed cream works better than most of them, and a bottle is only around $8
hey i have a question, i left my bearings sit in the rubbing alcohol over night and it rusted. is that bad so that i have to change my bearings? if i don't need to does it affect my riding? (some people say rust on bearings makes the bearings faster, is that true?)
well, first off what kind of rubbing alcohol did you use? (99% > 70%) and second, how old are they? and when have they been cleaned/lubed last (if at all)?
cause the rust you saw could have just been all the built up rust and dirt inside the bearings... when i first tried cleaning my old bearings (that hadn't ever been cleaned in the 4-5 months i used them) they turned the water orange from all the rust... so if you get all the rust out by repeating the cleaning process, they should be fine
i used 91% alcohol. they are pretty new maybe about one and a half - two months old. i just cleaned/lubed them yesterday. (did it at night, left it in the alcohol until the morning, then i dried them.
Lol thats what happened to my pink zigzags. So i changed them to 4 presidents (80a) though i like the pink zigs better. Cause i just cruise now gonna try learn how to slide since i have em
where can i get some of those speedrings?

1. Soaking them in soap/water/laundry detergent completely rusting them

3. soaking the bearing in lube
4. prying off the back of the bearing and bending it on its way back in

instead of leaving the bearings in the bowl can i just put it in a bottle and shake it
thefreak809 1 year ago
@thefreak809 That could work, I've just always done it this way and it works for me great, never had any problems.
I can see a few problems with the water bottle:
-it would be hard to get the bearings out one by one
-shaking the bearings together might damage them
-the dirt would swirl around inside after you finish shaking, getting back inside the bearings
Bones makes a bearing washer that eliminates those problems, if you want to check it out:

Is there any other way to clean the bearings,
i mean avoiding alcohol ?!
which kinda alcohol should i use ?
playitfuckinloud 2 years ago
isopropyl alcohol aka rubbing alcohol. if you don't know what that is that'd be sad.

do you remove both shields from the bearings?
ohyeaaforsuree 2 years ago
well, if you have 2 shields i guess you could if you want to
mine only have one shield each, and the other side is just the top of the cage
MichaelRoncoHornby 2 years ago
You should. The alcohol/cleaning solution can eat away the shields.

i have some abec 5s with metal shields, can i get those off the bearing to clean them better?
mikoyabuse11 2 years ago
im not too sure about metal shields
i only started to actually clean my bearings when i started buying the higher-end ones...
what i used to do with my old abec 5 bearings was put some bicycle teflon into the small space between the shield and the inner race (just a few drops of it) and then spin the bearing between my fingers. it cleans and lubricates, and i managed to make them last for a solid year and a half...
MichaelRoncoHornby 2 years ago
honestly tho, bones redz go for really cheap, and they have the rubber shield... i recommend bones over any abec rated bearing

Hmm what exactly do spacers do? I have Cell Swiss Ceramic Black V1 bearings and my frinds keep saying I should put spacers in but they ride perfect without them.

Can you clean bearings in gasoline/petrol. I heard you could.
Yournameonmyass 2 years ago
never tried it, but i have heard of people doing that
look up on how to do it, and maybe try it out on some shitty bearings, just to see if it works
MichaelRoncoHornby 2 years ago
yeah i bought a half pint Bones RF and my board goes freaking fast now
199dirtracer 2 years ago
yea it works just but some kerosine in a cup and swash the bearing around and then get them out and dry them thats what i do to mine works great
19SamMan98 2 years ago
man i dont care about washing my bearings just because i have some bones reds i just pop the sheild off and set to skate and i leave the side wear the sheild was the outside of the wheel so when i ride most of the dirt well get of my bearings
kevinsingasong 2 years ago
u will have to eventually some grains will always make their way in.
DEM1571 2 years ago
well your right i only clean them once for each bearings i buy
kevinsingasong 2 years ago
can I use White Lithium Grease I was told that it was perfect for bearing maintenance?
RAGETRAIN1 2 years ago
that stuff is designed for bicycles and cars....
you should probably buy a bearing-specific lubricant....
when i first got into longboarding i had no idea about how to clean my bearings, so i used to just put a few drops of bicycle teflon in each one... it works, but i wouldn't recommend it based on experience
MichaelRoncoHornby 2 years ago
wow that seems complicated for someone who is new to longboards(me) great video very well explained

nice where can iget speed cr4eam? and like what the fudge does it do?
MrElement45 2 years ago
you can get speed cream at most skate shops
and speed cream is a bearing lubricant. it makes the bearings roll faster with less wear. it reduces the friction between the ball bearings and the inner/outer races. you can use any kind of bearing lubricant, it doesn't have to be speed cream, but speed cream works better than most of them, and a bottle is only around $8

hey i have a question, i left my bearings sit in the rubbing alcohol over night and it rusted. is that bad so that i have to change my bearings? if i don't need to does it affect my riding? (some people say rust on bearings makes the bearings faster, is that true?)
SomeoneNamedTed 2 years ago
well, first off what kind of rubbing alcohol did you use? (99% > 70%) and second, how old are they? and when have they been cleaned/lubed last (if at all)?
cause the rust you saw could have just been all the built up rust and dirt inside the bearings... when i first tried cleaning my old bearings (that hadn't ever been cleaned in the 4-5 months i used them) they turned the water orange from all the rust... so if you get all the rust out by repeating the cleaning process, they should be fine
MichaelRoncoHornby 2 years ago
i used 91% alcohol. they are pretty new maybe about one and a half - two months old. i just cleaned/lubed them yesterday. (did it at night, left it in the alcohol until the morning, then i dried them.
SomeoneNamedTed 2 years ago
and no... rust on the bearings is bad because it creates a ton of friction
MichaelRoncoHornby 2 years ago
Lol thats what happened to my pink zigzags. So i changed them to 4 presidents (80a) though i like the pink zigs better. Cause i just cruise now gonna try learn how to slide since i have em
