Paul, You should contact the manufacturer of the Keyboard you are using, you had a number of request asking for the info on the keyboard you use, with all the hits you are getting, you are promoting the sale of their instrument. In all likelihood they will work out some arrangement with you to give you additional software, another board, or perhaps an arrangement where they will work out a publishing arrangement to promote thru their company as an additional feature to buy for there users.
awesome! do you know what keyboards TFF used? I'd like to buy a decent keyboards for these kinds of 80's sounds (need a good piano sound too). I can put 800$ within, have you got an idea? (I'm a guitarist but I need a keyboard for composing and I need great 80's sounds). thanks!
@splendora Early 80s was analogue synths, late 80s the early then/edgy digital synths started. The drum machines are also big part of the overall sound. I would consider getting a keyboard with a USB output and generate the sounds from a laptop. That way you can download the sounds you want without being limited to what the keyboard can produce.
@paulwwells thanks for the quick answer, maybe I will do that, buying a usb keyboard. It would be great to make a Head Over Heels cover! That would be amazing! thanks!
hey brilliant job! love this song could you do a tutorial for annie lennox walking on broken glass i would love to know how to play it but ive searched for hours trying to find a tutrorial or a cover of this song then i remebered watching your smooth operator tutorial and learned it (p.s its my favorite thing to play its so funky :)) and i picked it up so quickly so i thought if i was going to ask someone to do it it would be you (thats if you want to do it i know its very time consuming thanks!
@sloo7047 It might be a bit difficult pull all the parts together into a single keyboard arrangement, which would be why there's probably no tutorial.
Very nice Paul and thanks for the tutorial, I've been learning keyboard for about three months and this is a tune that I will be trying to learn, I only want to learn about 10 classic 80s hits and this is definatly one of them, if you might be able to post one for Ultravox vienna then that's be really cool aswell
@paulwwells are u setting ur keyboard this way?? split? or is it made that way??? i am really into bass but think i'll b better learning thru keyboard and urs does just that! what keyboard would u recc i use? thank u 4 sharing!
very nicely played. could you please make another tutorial of the same song and play slowly so i can see what keys you are playing. i would appreciate. thanks in advance.
I would love to hear you play on a decent Kurzweil or even better a Fairlight. Your talent shouldn't be hidden by an average keyboard. I think you have much more to offer than what you have shown.
@gunslinger5854 Thank you, you are very kind. I used to sell keyboards and at that time the Roland pianos were better than Kurzweil; and I remember telling the Kurzweil representative that that was my opinion when he visited one day, and he never spoke to me again after that. That was 20 years ago, and things may have changed since then. I'm pretty happy with this Roland, I do need better headphones though.
@paulwwells It's awfully hard to beat the higher end Sennheisers, more studios use them than any other. Also Yamaha makes a very nice electric Grand Piano, we have rented one several times and always got positive comments about the sound. By the way I meant no disrespect to Roland, their products have withstood the test of time. I just thought you would sound much better with a higher quality keyboard. I've been a sound engineer since the late 60s and have heard most of the keyboards out there.
@paulwwells I agree..... I used to sell keyboards as well and I think Kurzweil was highly overated and way overpriced for the features, much less the sound cabability. Roland is a great keyboard, but I think Yamaha put out better piano sounds overall, especially in the Motif XS8 I used to own (Yamaha did start off making pianos). There was a reason many music stores stopped carrying Kurzweil Some of it being they weren't too business savy when it came to dealing with it's retailers.
This is inspired. Good to see someone rocking out whilst doing a great cover too- there are plenty of you tube vids of people playing very profficiently whilst not appearing to enjoy the music!
I plugged this into some speakers and heard the bass! Great sound. an you tell me about the patch - do you have a simple split with bass/piano - or can the 700 have splits with cross over regions? (I use the RD170- which only does simple splits).
As a huge fan of the original song, I think you did a great job. You worked your way around the parts I imagine to be tricky on the piano really well, and the end result is something you can be proud of.
I have one question though, were you listening to the original while recording this? At some point (quite early in the video) you start banging your head at a point in the song that doesn't really shine on the piano (no offence).
Thank you. No I wasn't listening to the original - I haven't ever tried recording while listening to the original; I was probably waving my head about willing myself to keep it expressive.
hey paul! Think all your videos are great!! Can I asked what keyboard you have and much it cost you? I'm very keen to get an electric piano and yours sounds great!!

As far as I can tell the splits are hard splits - no crossover. I must admit it would be very useful to phase the sounds in and out around the split.
