Hey Dave is it ok if I post this video up on my new site im working on generaltsoschickenrecipe[dot]com im posting the best general tsos chicken recipe videos on the web i also made a funny song about it too. General Tsos General Tsos!!!!!
Not sure what I did wrong but my sauce became real thick real fast when I poured it onto the chicken and it was real pale and translucent kinda like a thick clear gravy. Oh well my boyfriend still ate it lol
OMG I HAVE MISSED YOU!!!! This looks soooooooo yummy!!!! I am going to make it as soon as I feel better. I have a cold so I stayed home from school today...but should feel better by the weekend! Love you and hope you do more videos soon because I noticed that you haven't done any for a year. Hope you are having a great day!!!
I always wanted to know how to make this because like you, everytime i order chinese or even go out for it, i ALWAYS ORDER General Tso'S cHICKEN! THANKS Dave! im going to watch more of ur vidz, how ofter do u post vidz? so i can subscribe! because i like cooking, well eating lol
I made this recipe tonight. WOW, This was as good if not better than any restaurant General Tso's I've ever had!, I did add the Broccolli cause I like it.
OMG I cant believe how they gank us at the stores. DID you say chicken thighs are more expensive, then boneless skinless chicken breats????? LOL, the boneless skinless breats are most expensive here. Thighs are so cheap so so cheap here, they are about the cheapest we can get here. That is unreal how supply and demand works. WOW what an eye opener, right now chicken thighs local grocery store 1.19 per lb. NOt sure of breat price i will get it but its much much more.
Your recipe is the fifth I've made in so many weeks, and I have to say, it's the BEST. I appreciate the trial and error you've put into it. Keep up the great work.
I got a question, a lot of the recipes I've seen for this have, at one point, called for some hoisin sauce, now does your recipe just not call for it, or do you know of a substitute that can be made for it instead?
Dave check out a video called "Jennifer 8. Lee: Who was General Tso? and other mysteries of". You can just search it in youtube search easy. Hope you are well. Thank you for the videos.
This recipe is similar to other recipes on youtube that I have seen. My problem with all of them is that when I go into a good chinese restaurant, the chicken is CRISPY...EVEN ON THE BUFFET... WE ARE MISSING SOMETHING HERE!!! WHAT ARE THEY DOING???? could it be they are using a different type of flour like rice flour? baking soda? ice water? double frying? I love your video's Dave, but we need to find out what they are doing to make their chicken nice and crispy, its really an important thing.
there are a lot of things to make the chicken crispy but the two big things are the flour and oil! the best oil to use when frying is peanut oil! the 3 best flours to use when frying is corn flour, self rasing flour, or all purpose flour that depends on you want texture you want, also you could put a little bit of milk in with the egg when coating the chicken, you could marinate the chicken in buttermilk, you could double coat the chicken dry, wet, dry
11:50 to 12:50 is pure comedy! this guy should be a professional comedian. this meal sure looks good, too bad general tso is deep fat fried though. i'll have to try and healthify it some way.
This is delicious! I made this but I tweaked it a bit. I used chili sauce instead of chili peppers and I used ground ginger because I do not like fresh or minced. It turned out wonderful! Tastes just like the Chinese restaurant my family went to when I was a child.
@jaybobed im starting to as well, i just heard about this guy, and i like the way he walk you through all the steps, his a cool cook! from the south, south here too, so i understand erthing he says :) nice one!
Dave, Love your recipes and the Lodge Dutch Oven. Cooked the General Tso for family last week... well let's just say it's GONE! Also cooked your Chicken Hash with the fam on a camping trip...HUGE success. Keep the stuff coming. Would love to see some camping/outdoor dutch oven shows. Chuck from Opelika, Alabama
As a guy with hair to the bottom of his shoulder blades leave it long it fits your face better. Besides if your god didn't want you to have hair (s)he/it would have made us all cue balls >:) nice recipe.
If you get a recipe for the lo mein like the Chinese restaurant,,,please post. I've tried different recipes for it but none taste like the kind you get in the restaurant.
it looks very good i will for sure have to try it.. Dave i did not think i could find 15 bean mix here in our tore since im in a small town but i found them so im going to try your 15 been soup....SOON!
Hi Dave. I really like your videos and have been watching them since you started. I was curious if your recipes are 'trial and error' to find out what works for you or if you take an existing recipe and make adjustments to them to find out what you like? Just wondering what videos we can expect from you in the months ahead.
I would say a little of both. Some recipes are from my childhood and others are trial and error. I look them up online and then I cook the recipe and decide if it was good or could it be better? It took me about 10 times cooking General Tso's to get it where I thought it was the best I ever had! Future recipes.... I dont know? I am looking for ideas? Do you have any favorites you would like to see me cook?
thanks for the quick response, Dave. How about beef stroganoff or maybe a good comfort food soup? Ive seen beef stroganoff made so many different ways and I'd like to see your twist on it.
Hi dave, i have seen so many vids on tacos, i was wondering maybe if you have your own way of doing them or do you do them the normal way..would love to see a video ....thanks..
Dave, I'd be interested in the temperature of oil in your recipes. "Medium" on your stove is likely not the same as "Medium" on mine. Maybe a thermometer that clips on the side of the cookware would let you give us a temperature. I've used your drop of water method before, but I think sometimes I get the oil too hot. Thanks.
Sure, I can gice you a temp! I always start frying at 325 to 350 degrees. After the food hits the oil it lowers the temp to around 275 or so. I lower my heat to medium high and I try to maintain the heat around 275. Any hotter for too long will burn your oil. When I am not frying, but sautee or cooking I use medium. Medium on my stove is simmer. So whatever makes your food simmer should be my medium.
Dave's using cornstarch, which is very different to flour, it has very little "raw" taste so needs cooking for less time. I've used it often in Chinese recipes, and it works very well. (Dave this looks great as ever - thanks!)
The reason Dave is not on Food Network is because he cooks with inexpensive ingredients, in inexpensive cookware. Food Network is about selling stuff. Even so, keep submitting Dave to them for their next TV cook. We need another Justin Wilson.
Hey Dave, i had another question i decided i will just cook it spicy, but the problem i have is i cant find red chili's like you had at wal-mart or any other store by me, i was wondering if i could just put chili powder? or if you had any other suggestions it would be appreciated, Thanks
SMyD77777 - Try looking in the ethnic foods aisle. Meijer stores have these dried chilies in the "Mexican" section of the ethnic aisle, packaged just as Dave shows. Good luck!
ya i looked everywhere and i asked one of the people that worked there and he said they don't carry dry chili's like that, so i just bought chili powder, thank you anyways, im just gonna put a dash in because it smells like its pretty spicy so i hope it works out.
mmmm...No, I would not use chili powder, chili powdeer has cumin in it (might make it taste like a taco? I would use some cayenne or something like that. Do not use too much or it will be very spicey. Maybe just a good pinch of cayenne powder for the entire dish! Let me know how it turns out.
Thanks Phillb, Narration? You mean I should tell stories on youtube? OR That someone might pay me to tell stories? I think that would be cool, but I have no idea how to go about it?
Yes, I mean that you have a cool storytelling style of conversation. Like I'm guessing that you could narrate for 'electronic books' or whatever. I'm sure also that younger people would love a great story told by yourself. Maybe an alternate career?
Hi Dave, i have a question my family doesn't like spicy foods at all, and i was wondering if you can just not add the chili's and just add some sesame oil and put sesame seeds on it and make it sesame chicken?
Well, not really, it would still taste good, but it is not the same as sesame chicken. You should try it with less vhili peppers. I do not like hot food either. The rice seems to cut down on the spicy. Give it a try and you will love it.
Aww, You don't like hot food Dave. Almost the same here but I like hot food, too bad it hates me! BTW, I saw someone who looked a lot like you maybe sampling a Naga Jolokia chili on YT. Could that be the reason for the fire escape & bathroom excursions?
I bet when you fried the green onions the house smelled really gooooooooooooooood. I like to eat this dish with snow peas or water chestnuts! It's an awesome chinese takeout dish.
got me a big dutch oven coming to real soon, birthday present from my sister. dave i'm gonna be lookin' to you for some recipes! first things first, i'll be fryin' some chicken! it's gon' be gooooood!
@Laynep123 Do you get General Tso's chicken in Germany? I have never seen it in the UK since it is created by chinese american immigrants. As a chinese person i really want to try it.
I went and made the jambalaya off the video he did it turned out crazy good everyone was suprised :) (I dont cook) Even people who said they normally dont like it liked it
The Ingredient list on the right says 2 cups of green onions, but it looks more like you put in 1/2 cup. I just want to make sure I'm making General Tso chicken and not General Tso green onions. I'd like to give it a try but I would like to make sure the measurements are correct.
The recipe calls for 2 cups. I used one bunch that you can buy from the store. I am using my LARGE dutch oven so it may look like less. I am using three pounds of chicken?
ok so the holidays are around the corner and im getting my recipes started i know im an eraly bird!But... can you do a broccoli and cheese casserole i wanted to do one this year, but mine is so basic can you do one please!!
If you want your chicken still crispy after you cook it, you should cook the sauce unil thickened in another pot and then pour the sauce over the chicken at the end :O
mmmm that looks goooooood. I am litterally licking the computer monitor. Thats my favorite chinese dish. I am fer sure gonna try it and throw one of your eggrolls along side of it. yum. BTW missed your videos, glad youre back.
DAVE! where you been. your hair is getting long.. one step closer to look like renegade master! lollll. anyway, good to see you dishing out all the yummy recipes!!
goodness. is there anything you CAN'T cook, dave?
oh, and i showed this to my mom (she's chinese). she was very impressed at the way your dish turned out in the dutch oven, especially since she normally uses a wok for chinese food.
she said your pronunciation was pretty spot on, too :)
Yo Dave, where have you been? You don't have favorites listed but you might check out Betty's Kitchen, a little different style but she is pretty cool! She is also down in your neck of the woods.

I bet when you fried the green onions the house smelled really gooooooooooooooood. I like to eat this dish with snow peas or water chestnuts! It's an awesome chinese takeout dish.

Thank you for this recipe!!! I miss General Tso's chicken. Chinese food in America is much better than Chinese here in Germany.
Laynep123 2 years ago
@Laynep123 Do you get General Tso's chicken in Germany? I have never seen it in the UK since it is created by chinese american immigrants. As a chinese person i really want to try it.

Hey Dave,
The Ingredient list on the right says 2 cups of green onions, but it looks more like you put in 1/2 cup. I just want to make sure I'm making General Tso chicken and not General Tso green onions. I'd like to give it a try but I would like to make sure the measurements are correct.
Cheers
murphj4 2 years ago
The recipe calls for 2 cups. I used one bunch that you can buy from the store. I am using my LARGE dutch oven so it may look like less. I am using three pounds of chicken?
jaybobed 2 years ago
That's great Dave, thanks! I'm looking forward to trying this tonight. You do a great job with instructions. They're always easy to follow.
Cheers,

looks amazing like always Dave.
If you want your chicken still crispy after you cook it, you should cook the sauce unil thickened in another pot and then pour the sauce over the chicken at the end :O

can you add Flour?
WBHustlas 2 years ago
Corn Starch and flour are interchangeable. So if you don't know how to use corn starch DON'T. If you prefer flour do it.
Also....
"How y'all doing? We've got some flavors to share"
That line was amazing.

goodness. is there anything you CAN'T cook, dave?
oh, and i showed this to my mom (she's chinese). she was very impressed at the way your dish turned out in the dutch oven, especially since she normally uses a wok for chinese food.
she said your pronunciation was pretty spot on, too :)
