I watched ABC quite often in the early 70s. The announcer's voice alone, really brings back memories. I loved Howard K. Smith's cameo bit on The Odd Couple.
In late 1970, Frank Reynolds was dumped when ABC was able to poach Harry Reasoner from CBS.
Reynolds stayed with ABC.
In 1978, when the three-anchor approach for "World News Tonight" was unveiled, Reynolds was back (along with Peter Jennings and Max Robinson).
I had heard an urban legend that had Reynolds not died in 1983, Jennings and Robinson would have been dropped from "WNT" that year and Reynolds would have become sole anchor.
Great post! I use WinMovieMaker to splice these into classic/retro (especially late 60's to early 80's) movies & TV shows. I use a clip like this & put it B4 a show starts. For a TV show, I use era suitable commercials & splice them where commercials should be. I could use this after the show/B4 a movie starts. When finished I have a cool retro piece. It is almost like sitting down to a typical 70's - 80's evening & watching TV. For realism, it's even better on an old RCA 25in console TV.
It's interesting how now with ABC news it the land of women, Walters, who is past retirement, Diane, ect. I'm not saying women can't anchor news it is just that all the great men from news are gone. Jennings was the last great one
Two journalists featured in this promo -- Frank Reynolds and Peter Jennings were co-anchors for ABC's "World News Tonight." Reynolds was based in Washington, Jennings in London, and the third anchor, Max Robinson, in Chicago. Sadly, none of the three are still living.
yep, the first Frank Reynolds go round.. he was pushed aside when Harry Reasoner became available and, as we all know, got a second chance when Reasoner/Walters got booted and Roone Arledge went "outside the box" to create WNT (now just World News) .. Frank left us much too soon..
can you post the url to see the full tv program on archive.org - i'm not finding it by searching for it on there. thanks!

@TIPTON340 It's "etc." etc. etc. etc. Why is that so hard for people to remember?!?!
reymatt76 1 year ago
They should have kept Frank and Howard at the helm. Harry Reasoner and Barbara Walters were a mistake.

Very provocative and eye opening graphics.

You're right about it being a scary promo, but I guess it had to be. 1970 was a pretty heavy time.
