This stuff makes me feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. How can it be that I live in a country where people literally riot in the streets over the prospect of implementing normal, first world health care? All of these lies and fairy tales Glenn Beck weaves about people dying in Canadian waiting rooms could easily be debunked by ten minutes of internet research or, you know, asking some people from Canada or elsewhere in the developed world. But I guess people want to go bankrupt from med bills
I get great healthcare through the VA system as a disabled veteran. They make sure to cover all aspects of my health needs, and offer many programs which I currently don't need. I don't wish disability on anyone, and military healthcare is miserable (otherwise I wouldn't be in this position). I know that the government is perfectly capable of providing quality care, low cost medications, and well organized medical records. I really wish they would extend this to everyone.
Socialized health care is great for the few in it. It is "socialism" for the rest of the population. When is for the rest of the population, "it is anti-American" in a "free market capitalist system". America is a real confusing place to figure out when you're in it. A very easy place to understand when looked from the outside in (IE: coming from a society way passed these silly ideological arguments).
95% of the American working people are hostages to a dead cold war propaganda model.
@JImmy4336 At least you're not ashamed of being from Iowa. Be careful who you vote for, they may get elected and hold real silly positions they never disclosed during the campaign. Iowa can't be that bad!
Clearly he has said, "I don't give a damn about the people of the US or of Iowa. May God forgive this man. Give us all health care like you, Grassley. Say goodbye to the Senate, Grassley Go Home!
Clearly he has said, "I don't give a damn about the people of the US or of Iowa. May God forgive this man. Give us all health care like you, Grassley. Say goodbye to the Senate, Grassley Go Home!

The reason why "where's your plan?" didn't work with republicans is because having a plan was never their goal. Their goal was to drag out the debate as long as possible while simultaneously watering down the bill. That way the democrats would get to a point where they'd have to pass something, no matter what it was. If the repubs defeat the bill, they can claim victory. If the bill passes, they have a bad bill to run against later. It was a win-win for them to NOT help in any way.
Its funny how many peope support this because with ignorance its easy to take comments out of context... he said "go work for the gov" not support socialized healthcare. Yes any government job comes with full medical, dental, everything. Never once did he say that the government could provide a good healthcare service. Its like if somebody asked me how they could 18 dollars an hour hoding a sign, i'd say go work for the government. It is the place that can waste tax payer dollars so efficiently.
Thank you TYT. Someboby has to be the voice of reason. I have an operation on my back scheduled this coming Wednesday, I have been paying health insurance for 30 years and never ever used it once. Now I need it and my out of pocket cost is $2500.00. My back is in a bad place and I have no choice but to deal with it now. This amount of money doesn't sound like much but if your savings to a hit in the Wall Street mess believe me it is a lot. We need a public option and we need it NOW.
Its strange that Republicans dont want a government run health care system that bankrupts private insurance. If private insurance was gone then women would have to pay out of pocket for abortions. Since the government cant fund them and private insurance does. But then again I guess the private insurance folks pay more then the pro-lifers...
@srawyrick Well isn't the job of the government to protect and look after the people of that country thats why there is the miltary and police. Why is it such a big leap from that to looking after people while they are sick those people pay taxes and are productive members of society and the economy the alternative is paying them more and I don't think you could sell every employer in the counrty on giving their workers either more pay or insurance.
If you want the Truth, listen to Dr. Michael Savage of "The Savage Nation." His radio program airs 5 days a week for 3 hours a day (in most of the 400 markets).
Dr. Savage regards himself as a Conservative Independent and his mantras are: "Borders, language and culture" and "Liberalism is a mental disorder."
Dr. Michael Savage has a Ph.D, two Master Degrees, a Bachelor Degree, and has written over 25 excellent books.
do u actually believe that ??that is the lamest excuse for not fixing the health care system.people who"take care of themselves get sick too.but i suppose you take care of yourself so great that you will never get sick or injure yourself in no kind of way for the rest of your life right?
That is not an excuse for not fixing health care. Everyone agrees it could use adjusting. I would like to know how people who don't pay for insurance now are going to be covered for free by a program that the government pays for.. Considering government money is tax money from the work force. By the way, I don't medicate when I am sick. That only masks symptoms. Your immune system is what heals infection.
I only want an equal OPPORTUNITY for everyone, not an equal outcome. If your too lazy to go out and get a job then Ill be damned if the government should feed you. Democrats and big government supporters would rather buy votes through social programs than provide meaningful economic recovery and this "stimulus" package was just another example.
And your hero W could care less if you ever worked in your life Kung. Unless you went overseas where the money was. Because it sure seems to be leaving America as soon as the subsidies the republicons passed into law hit their bank accounts. So in your eyes to get some of that wealth leave the country. SEE YA!
The New Deal has been in place since FDR, so either the New Deal ended it or it was pure coincidence that America blossomed during the first 30 years of the New deal, or it never ended at all, right? Now, I 've noticed that some people distinguish between New Deal government expansion and WWII government expansion. Why? US involvement in Europe and Japan in and after WWII was a Global New Deal. Government expansion worked great for the U.S.- economy.
That is incorrect. If you look at unemployment records then you will see that under the new deal unemployment never went below 17% and averaged 23% for the entire new deal. The only time there was any improvement in unemployment was when the first new deal was ruled unconstitutional. There is a difference between domestic spending to increase GDP and the complete rebuilding of the worlds infrastructure by US companies. It is the rebuilding that strengthened the economy not the govt spending.
Did George C Marshall work for a private company or was he secretly US Secretary of State, a government official?
Was the New Deal dismantled in 1941? Did Government involvement in the economy end with WWII ? Was WWII a private enterprise?
Did America return to a pre-newdeal level of government involvement after the war? And is that what caused the post war economic boom? Did Keynes never had any followers in Washington?
Actually, you did get it all wrong. You're just twisting words to try to prove your point. The fact is, although war profiteering is wrong, WWII would have helped our economy with or without the New Deal.
Absolutely true. The thing is, some people, mostly Americans, often GOP seem to believe that government spending is always bad. But it isn't. WWII helped the economy more than the New Deal did because Government spent more on WWII. Government spending isn't always bad, but ofcourse it isn't always good either. It just shouldn't be so politicized in the US. It works for the EU, China & Australia, where taxing keeps up with spending...that's a major problem in the US. Settlers don't dig taxes...
OK, but just because something works doesn't mean it's what people want. This is a democracy, if people don't want national health care, we shouldn't force them to pay for it.
Indeed. But the only official poll is the one held on election day and that one's not clear although it gave the democrats a majority. My guts tell me that the people long for a succesful presidency even if they don't always disagree with their leader. I'm dutch and we pay an average of 140 dollar each month for healthcare. It covers just about everything but clit-transpants and anal bleeching....it means we don't have to worry about healthcare. We can invest the rest in small businesses etc.
Glad it works for you. Maybe you have a point, but we're going to vote on it. "Europe does it so it's OK" seems to be the rallying cry of the Democratic Party, and it simply isn't that simple.
Certainly not everything the EU does is good. We've just been given a president that nobody voted for. He was appointed by appointed officials whose mandate is based on a treaty that the dutch and the french rejected and the rest didn't even get to vote for (or against) So next time you have a Bush-Gore situation and we call you undemocratic....remind us please. Now as for healthcare reform, give it a chance. If it fails, kick Obama out. If it works, reward him. That's democracy.
I mostly agree with that. In fact, I just did a Government class project on the EU decision. My only question for you, you want a president to be elected democratically, but you want him to make unpopular decisions?
Traditionally it's the job of the leader to take it upon him to make decisions and take the blame if it doesn't work out and get credit if it does. Do I want him to make unpopular decisions? No, but it's his job to lead. And if he leads you the wrong way you can elect someone else to lead you somewhere else. It's better to try a zigzag course than not to try anything at all. One of the advantages of the american system is that you can have a very effective majority.
George Bush didn't win the popular vote, but he became president, and then the PATRIOT Act went into effect. Bush is long gone, but the Act continues to harm Americans. See what I mean?
By the way. We had a public option since the 40s but it wasn't perfect. Now the government acts more like a kind of referee and if you make less than 25.000dollar a year they pay you a monthly taxreturn of about 35 euros (50 dollars). Meanwhile I pay no more than 35% income tax, the highest rate is 52%, so it certainly works for some. Does that mean you can do without the public option? We can now. But it worked for nearly 60 years. It probably did help us reduce costs.
kung how did allowing derivatives for the last 8 years strengthing our economy unless you are kin to Bernie Madoff? Maybe you madeoff like the other republicon bandits. Betting against companies for pennies on the dollar. Republicons put the law in 2000 to help rip off 401Ks and nearly bankrupt the companies that would take these credit swap defaults. Fastforward 2008. What really happened. Read something about your republicon party.
You can also note that as soon as the 2nd half of the New Deal began unemployment rose sharply. The only periods of REAL recovery occur as WW2 starts and demand for goods goes up and when the Supreme Court ruled the first new deal unconstitutional.
The war didn't bring us out of the depression. Neither did the new deal. The American work force put in blood and sweat and hard work. No one in Congress fixed the depression. On either side.
The destruction and subsequent rebuilding of all of Europe and most of Asia turned us into the economic powerhouse that we are today. The war also brought an increased demand for goods as most of the other countries work force was dedicated more to fighting than manufacturing, that is what turned the depression around. But I agree nobody in Congress fixed it and Im sure an economic recovery was the last thing on FDRs mind when he proposed a declaration of war.
Good point...Our current problem is that we really don't have very many manufacturing jobs anymore, we gave them all away to other countries. Our country is service based, which is really unsustainable in a "global economy". We've all but stopped making physical goods.
TYT must be retarded, everything they hear they try to put a far-left liberal spin on it.maybe TYT is upset that americans finally woke up and starting to put a stop to this madness and why is the government taking your tax money and giving it to ACORN to take the 2010 census when it was proved they make up names for voter registation
Okay, If Medicare works, it should be within it's budget. That means we are paying as we go and not adding debt that we'll have to pay off later. Currently it is 39,684,660,000,000 (39.6 trillion) over-budget. How is that working? How is it being responsible for ourselves. If we want to make ourselves accountable, we should pay for the care we use, instead of borrowing money or inflating our currency or raising taxes every year until the end of time. How much debt until we're bankrupt?
I have heard some extreme racist remarks from the far right.I have heard the constitution and religious argument. Did sre forefathers have doctors and hospitals taking their homes .If you get sick do pray or see a doctor.
Its fustrating people argue the point for the private system that point out for reform. The good jobs come and go along with the good health care packages .The US goverment is still there. I believe in profit for companies, but not at the price of your health and asset protection.
If 100 million workers pay into a private health plan ,with average cost 880 a month thats close to aTRILLION dollars .Since they insure the working healthy.I think their making money.Mean while back at the ranch the goverments picking up the tab for the elderly and to sick to work.Reform, to say it mildly, should only be the first bite. Its time for private insurer to hit the road.Truth is if Obama were white and republican this would be a no brainer for the most part.
Now you go again trying to put racist words in people"s mouths. What destroys your theory is that you are only paying the part that is over-budget. What about the actual cost? Keep in mind all the people with diseases that will cost thousands more a month than 880 bucks.
Hmm un- and under- insured need to speak up. You are unseen at these meetings and in the media. And where are all those celebrities during the run uo to election. New money shames old money...offer to carry some tax burden so health care avslable to the people who gave you your celebrity, Jon Stewart = news with intelligence in America!
We pay 307 billion just in interest on the debt. I can't understand any reason to support raising that any higher. By tonight our unfunded LIEabilities will reach 58 trillion dollars. The proposed health care bill is 1 trillion over budget. Why do we deserve to just pass that along. You call him "stab u in the back Obama", then why don't you think he would do the same for this plan (I may be mistaken, you might be proposing a medicare only plan).
I think u guys are so right. Republicans try to act like the government plan is so bad when there on and have great heath benefits. I feel they should cut cost on the war against drugs. Which is very very high and find a simpler way to explain and cover all Americans health benefits. Cut cost on things we're doing now that don't make sense, and provide the American people with the things we need to go on in the future.
xj2yzz: It really doesn't matter at this point. When we borrow money, I suppose we don't have to directly pull it from the people, because we pay only the interest on the debt every year. Right now we pay 297 billion a year just for the interest (which is pretty damn expensive). Look up the Us debt clock for the numbers. Eventually our Chinese credit card will run out, or they may want to pull their "savings", and then we would be screwed. Let's pay off the debt so this isn't an issue.
How great could your Health Care be if money wasn't an issue? That's why the Government has the best Health Care because money isn't an issue to them. The Reps. will borrow it & the Dems. will tax you. America, one the American people will solve this American issue.
TAX / BORROWING ----- They are opposite sides of the same coin. Regarding Government, to TAX is to enslave others & to BORROW is to sell others into slavery.
ArtInsightTV: That SHOULD be a false choice, since we SHOULD have savings (i'm laughing while typing that). It really doesn't matter which one, since both of those will eventually come directly out of our pocket. If we didn't run huge deficits EVERY YEAR, then maybe....Taxing, if it meant us giving a loan to the government to be paid back in full. (Utopian thinking doesn't end up solving much though).
Yeah.....If we work hard and have cool heads maybe we can have at least a shady middle ground. We can feel good that we all can have a right to our own opinions. But that also means no plan will be perfect, ever. Right now it's so complicated and bloated from all the hundreds of changes and reforms; I think everyone agrees with that.
I'd believe the republicans when they all opt out of thier Federal Government health care plans and sign up with some high priced private plan. Then they might have a shred of creditability.
Republicans wake up. Every developed IN THE WORLD country has health care for EVERYBODY. BRITIAN, FRANCE, GERMANY, FINLAND, SWISS, JAPAN, KOREA, CANADA, ITALY, SPAIN, EVEN CUBA! but we DON'T!
ReFlubLieRants still sucking/ Continually abandoning/ All morals and rules/ Devoid of compassion/ Demanding not asking/ We follow the fools/ Destroying the nation/ & our beloved Constitution/ Bought the entire mass media/ To broadcast such crap/ Daily trying to trap/ Every one of us/ I wish it weren't true/ But you elected Bush who/ Led us into a dark abyss/ Why would you ever follow/ Listen to another/ When, on us, they piss?
lowrigging-It's useless to quibble over parties &/or politicians a/c the ReFlubLieRant Party+the DemCantDoCrap party are in bed together to harm"We The People, in order to better represent only the wishes of the multinational corporatocracy. Traitor, terrorist, BusHitler destroyed us & our constittuttion+Stab-U-In-The Back Obama is nothing more than just a happier face of the oligarchy, put there to appease the masses. Massive vote fraud keeps us from ever voting a good leader in.
WARHATER: Excellent comment. I completely agree. My votes will go to Ron Paul, and Independent parties. I don't think anyone else deserves my vote. You could even say i'm making a mistake for voting for Ron, but we NEED a real conservative, and I think he's the last one left. 12 trillion dollar debt is unacceptable at best. 58 trillion in unfunded liabilities is a crime. Local power. Give the States more power to make their own laws.
Stupid...Paul, nor any other ReFlubLieRant politician have ever been conservative, simply because these traitors fundementally changed our hallowed Constitution. Their hero, Reagan(shmo)nomix's house-of-cards crumbled to rob us all as did his tax changes+healthcare changes+union busting.Medicare works; the Fire dept works;post office works, so make MEDICARE FOR EVERYONE,+cease all expensive invasion/occupations, tax(as before) the rich assholes. 1st, one must extracate one's head from one's ass!
If we have to extracate our heads from our asses, then let's look realisticly: Our Medicare Liability is 39 trillion in the hole (that's not working, it's passing on the bill because we don't want to pay for our own health care). Our post office is about to hit bankrupcy (my dad is being FORCED into retirement, and he really doesn't want to because he'll lose some retirement pay). Fire Dept works, somehow it stays in budget (to my knowledge anyway). What level do you want the debt to go to?
StupiditE-I'll make it simple: the USA had nonprofit healthcare for decades. DO IT AGAIN! My favorite w/b to cut out insurance companies ENTIRELY cuz Medicare WORKS & it would work for everyone as per the middle class realizing more money to BUY, which would improve the ECONOMY. Get rid of the money-sucking wars & we'll ALL have even more bucks. Tax the rich like b/4 Reagan-no-mind-ix will give the the middle class even more increasing tax revenue for our gov't. I told you it would be simple.
Medicare doesnt work and the post office is 3 billion dollars in debt. Fire departments and police departments are all local...
Over a ten year period the Iraq and Afghan wars are projected to cost a little over a trillion dollars... How does that compare to the omnibus bill, the "Stimulus package", the bank bailouts, and the trillion dollars projected for this healthcare bullshit. The "rich assholes" already provide 80% of the taxes as it is, just how much do you expect them to pay?
johnny, most of us see through the republican misinformation. The HSA in the UK and Canada have started attacking the republicans because many of them have been lying their asses off.
The New Deal was a failure and dont let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise. Unemployment never fell below 17% and averaged 25% up until the build up to WW2. The new deal didnt end the depression, WW2 did. Fire Departments, Police Departments, and libraries are all local and state run (minus FBI and CIA, etc etc), our agriculture subsidization is killing any competition between farmers and artificially keeping prices high, student loans are outsourced to for-profit corporations...
Unemployment was at 25% when FDR took office. It was at 15% at the end of his first 4 years in office. So is it just a coincidence that the largest drop in unemployment in any single presidential term in history happened during the introduction to the new deal?
Btw, even if it was WWII that officially ended the Great Depression, wasn't WWII big government spending?
Oh, please. If everyone had single-payer healthcare costs would skyrocket as well as inefficiency. Care would also be rationed. That happens every single time government-run healthcare is tried.
Mattus888, where do you get this fiction you try to pass off as fact!? The VA is the best health care in the US. The only way to make it suck is to cut funding and say "Hey! They can't deliver!" And guess who does THAT? Give everyone VA care, or Medicare, or the Congress Plan, all government plans that kick butt!
Medicare and the plans that Congress get are different. Medicare has a screwy compensation system that underpays doctors and is quite complex. Congress gets to choose what plan they want, as supposed to the government. Either way, imposing either plan nationwide is entirely different than just among a section of Americans. The government, unlike private companies has no way effective way to control costs besides rationing and no incentive to make itself more efficient, thus leading to waste.
Once again, another mislabeled video on youtube. the republican did not admit government run health care was better. The senators and congressmen don't have government run healthcare/insurance....
No average US citizen will have the same benefits as a senator. The new governmeny healthcare will be cheap and you get what you pay for. Want good insurance? Get a job and budget your money for it. That's what I did. And I will never give up paying for my own insurance.
Pianochic7, I hate to inform you, yes you will give up paying for your own insurance. You will be forced onto the govt plan whether you like it or not (and you will be fined the same amount if you don't). An all private insurance will be forced out of business and made illegal.
Young turks are idiots. The question was "How do I get coverage like yours?" To get coverage like his you have to work for the GOV. The answer is correct.
You guys are critical and also very uninformed. THE PLAN THAT IS BEING PUSHED FOR THE PUBLIC IS NOT THE PLAN THAT THE LEGISLATURE HAS!!!!!! FREGIN IDIOTS!!!!!!!!! The GOV gets medical savings plans and benefits that the Republicans tried to pass long ago. Along with savings/investment retirement accounts. never offered to the public.
The poster is missing the fundamental point: indeed the current "government healthcare" IS better -- it's BECAUSE it's the FEP Program (which, PS, is private insurance -- vast majority BLUE CROSS). Many senators have admitted that they don't want to change FEP (very expensive, very rich benefits) at all -- you can BET they don't want to be forced for themselves and their families to have to be on this public option. The public option in Washington will be the END of private insurance...
Hey jjjjj..... It's the screwed up legal system in our requiring doctors to pay outrageous malpractice insurance premiums that keeps costs high. Fix that, and leave our existing world class system of health care alone.
What a bunch of no good, lazy, freeloading, moocher left wing nuts. I got a bteer idea for the guy that ask the question and the guys in the video. Get a job that has benefits or buy your own. The country does not owe you morons anything. Apparently the makers of this video have enough money to afford the internet and they guy in the video probably has a cell phone, a SUV and most likely drinks alcohol and soft drinks. Give up some of the stuff you could do without and buy it your lazy self
Why the hell should everybody be given the benefits senators and other federal employees get for their WORK?! If you want the benefits get a fucking JOB!
Members of Congress do not have Government Run Healthcare they have the same plans we have, they just get the best plan money can buy. lawmakers have a wealth of options when it comes to medical plans—which are paid for by taxpayers at 15 Billion a year While 85% of private companies offer their employees exactly one health plan, lawmakers and their staffs have a choice of 10 healthcare options from which to choose. The bounty of HMOs and PPOs are part of what all federal employees enjoy,
This guy's full of shit. Grassley didn't admit that government-RUN healthcare is better. And his message wasn't that the only way to get good healthcare is to work for the government or have gov't-run healthcare. The guy asked how he could get the SAME HEALTHCARE as Grassley has. THEN Grassley replied, go work for the federal gov't, meaning then he then could have the same healthcare. People have be dumb like a bag of hammers to believe the spin bullshit these guys put out.
GOVT health care is the best option, which is of course why the democrats killed ammendments in the health bill today that would requre govt employees to have the same plan the public would. its going to be so much better that insurance now, but even though its going to be so much better we're going to keep our current plans. Can any of you people actually give details about the health plan?
The government cannot afford the fantastic health care that government employees get for everyone. Thats why Senators and Representatives will not be a part of Obama's health care plan. We all get the shitty universal health insurance while they get everything covered.
God, they completely miss the point. The point is the elites and privileged class will always make the best services available to themselves and get to the head of the line, while everyone else has "universal" access to rationing and long waits. And in what fucking universe can the thievery the privileged classes have access to be distributed to 300 million people???--what with a trillion dollar deficit thanks to the left's savior ! Fucking clueless idiots.
I survived a suicide attempt which was triggered by being uninsured and wrestling bipolar disorder. I could not afford my medicines and was unable to work untreated. Luckily my countrymen are not selfish cut-throat assholes like the Americans and I was able to recover in PR and bounce back to never return to America....I'm happy and working a good job now! Universal health care IS the answer!
As for the American public, the reality that Obama is not up to the job seems to finally be setting-in; the poll numbers are now headed steadily south- is he already facing his Waterloo on this legislation?
Barack Obama will never say to your face what he actually plans to do. Everything's rolled-out in a Trojan horse. Theyll be no private insurance industry left after five years. Why should we give Government medical insurance to 15 million illegals?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wow you people really have to reach to find some way to draw attention away from the poll numbers the unPresident has and his bankruptcy.........er health care plan.
And in this seemingly redemptive offering, Obama may be promising what only God can actually deliver, in the form of yet another, more eloquent, version of the same old utopian dream that started with Rousseau and Marx.
Grassley says he works for the government. He is a Senator, and he works for the people of Iowa. he works for WE THE PEOPLE. Only in Government would the employees receive a better health care plan than the employer. Grassley makes money by not understanding the health care crisis. This anti abortion moron only cares about children until they exit the birth canal. After that, they are on their own, unless a parent works for the federal government. He has selective morallity.
Republicans support a system that refuses to treat children with cancer. This is what thay want to defend as their system. A Govt plan will force competition and a moral compass on Republicans and their Corporate Health Care Handlers.
Do Republicans know that in the not to distant future we will be showing their little CSPAN corporate financed dramas as evidence in criminal courts.
They have sold America out over the past 30 years and now they will be exposed using their own words.
You guys are full of crap. Grassley wasn't saying governmental healthcare, aka UNIVERSAL healthcare was the best. Just that the plan he had by being a U.S. Senator was the best.
2) Can you see this ? Are you just another blank slate? Are you going to debate this healthcare issue for years or will you DEMAND our government work for the people and follow U.S. Policy NOW!!!! What the hell is wrong with you guys? Do we have to continue to live in a idiot world. google: LaRouchePac
1) Under the Preamble of our Federal Constitution, our government MUST provide for the common defense and protect the citizens and provide for the general welfare of All Americans. We are supposed to have a government funded public healthcare system to protect us just like we have a government funded public Army that protects us. This is Senior Policy. When will the stupid American population come up scale and clear up there misunderstandings on there Federal Constitution.
gkgregerYes they interpret common welfare broadly when it suits them and very narrowly when it suits them. We have no rule of law in this country. There are no standards. Just whatever the corporations throught their lobbyists and contributions and their Congressional tools feel like doing.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Also these guys are morons because if everyone had a plan that was as good as federal government employees it would bankrupt the united states. The costs would be astronomical. The fact that health care reform is even on the table during a recession is the world's biggest joke. We cannot afford to do anything that will increase costs to the taxpayer.
astronomically' more expensive then healthcare. like hundreds of times more. it wouldnt be much of a bruden, its justice, and during a recession is the best time as so many peoples insurance are at risk
nateshack126: You have to be kidding. The government is pissing money away just to be spending it to provide stimulus to the economy. Why can't the economy be stimulated by spending on worhtwhile things people can use?
Because citizens would spend it on paying off debt and consumer products which were manufactured overseas. Only a small part of stimulus given to citizens is spent in a way that adds to the GDP.
Spending it on projects and infrastructure creates jobs which gives people that money in end too, but we get things like roads and schools in the process.
This stuff makes me feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. How can it be that I live in a country where people literally riot in the streets over the prospect of implementing normal, first world health care?

Why is it the role of the federal government to provide health care to people that can't afford it?
srawyrick 2 years ago
@srawyrick Well isn't the job of the government to protect and look after the people of that country thats why there is the miltary and police. Why is it such a big leap from that to looking after people while they are sick those people pay taxes and are productive members of society and the economy the alternative is paying them more and I don't think you could sell every employer in the counrty on giving their workers either more pay or insurance.
contempgirl 2 years ago
@srawyrick Also having a healthy workforce is good for the economy as it is more productive.

The government is there to look after its peoples interests, I am pretty sure most peoples interests would be to remain healthy.

I only want an equal OPPORTUNITY for everyone, not an equal outcome. If your too lazy to go out and get a job then Ill be damned if the government should feed you. THE NEW DEAL DIDNT PULL US OUT OF THE DEPRESSION. Do your damn research. BAAAAAAAHHH.
kungfoochicken08 2 years ago
The New Deal has been in place since FDR, so either the New Deal ended it or it was pure coincidence that America blossomed during the first 30 years of the New deal, or it never ended at all, right? Now, I 've noticed that some people distinguish between New Deal government expansion and WWII government expansion. Why? US involvement in Europe and Japan in and after WWII was a Global New Deal. Government expansion worked great for the U.S.- economy.
xavierbaudet 2 years ago
That is incorrect. If you look at unemployment records then you will see that under the new deal unemployment never went below 17% and averaged 23% for the entire new deal. The only time there was any improvement in unemployment was when the first new deal was ruled unconstitutional. There is a difference between domestic spending to increase GDP and the complete rebuilding of the worlds infrastructure by US companies. It is the rebuilding that strengthened the economy not the govt spending.
kungfoochicken08 2 years ago 3
Did George C Marshall work for a private company or was he secretly US Secretary of State, a government official?
Was the New Deal dismantled in 1941? Did Government involvement in the economy end with WWII ? Was WWII a private enterprise?
Did America return to a pre-newdeal level of government involvement after the war? And is that what caused the post war economic boom? Did Keynes never had any followers in Washington?
I must have gotten it all wrong then.
xavierbaudet 2 years ago
Actually, you did get it all wrong. You're just twisting words to try to prove your point. The fact is, although war profiteering is wrong, WWII would have helped our economy with or without the New Deal.
CaptainVideo890 2 years ago
Absolutely true. The thing is, some people, mostly Americans, often GOP seem to believe that government spending is always bad. But it isn't. WWII helped the economy more than the New Deal did because Government spent more on WWII. Government spending isn't always bad, but ofcourse it isn't always good either. It just shouldn't be so politicized in the US. It works for the EU, China & Australia, where taxing keeps up with spending...that's a major problem in the US. Settlers don't dig taxes...
xavierbaudet 2 years ago
OK, but just because something works doesn't mean it's what people want. This is a democracy, if people don't want national health care, we shouldn't force them to pay for it.
CaptainVideo890 2 years ago
We can invest the rest in small businesses etc.
xavierbaudet 2 years ago
Glad it works for you. Maybe you have a point, but we're going to vote on it. "Europe does it so it's OK" seems to be the rallying cry of the Democratic Party, and it simply isn't that simple.
CaptainVideo890 2 years ago
Certainly not everything the EU does is good. We've just been given a president that nobody voted for. He was appointed by appointed officials whose mandate is based on a treaty that the dutch and the french rejected and the rest didn't even get to vote for (or against) So next time you have a Bush-Gore situation and we call you undemocratic....remind us please. Now as for healthcare reform, give it a chance. If it fails, kick Obama out. If it works, reward him. That's democracy.
xavierbaudet 2 years ago
I mostly agree with that. In fact, I just did a Government class project on the EU decision. My only question for you, you want a president to be elected democratically, but you want him to make unpopular decisions?
CaptainVideo890 2 years ago
Traditionally it's the job of the leader to take it upon him to make decisions and take the blame if it doesn't work out and get credit if it does. Do I want him to make unpopular decisions? No, but it's his job to lead. And if he leads you the wrong way you can elect someone else to lead you somewhere else. It's better to try a zigzag course than not to try anything at all. One of the advantages of the american system is that you can have a very effective majority.
xavierbaudet 2 years ago
George Bush didn't win the popular vote, but he became president, and then the PATRIOT Act went into effect. Bush is long gone, but the Act continues to harm Americans. See what I mean?
CaptainVideo890 2 years ago
It probably did help us reduce costs.
xavierbaudet 2 years ago

You can also note that as soon as the 2nd half of the New Deal began unemployment rose sharply. The only periods of REAL recovery occur as WW2 starts and demand for goods goes up and when the Supreme Court ruled the first new deal unconstitutional.
kungfoochicken08 2 years ago
The war didn't bring us out of the depression. Neither did the new deal. The American work force put in blood and sweat and hard work. No one in Congress fixed the depression. On either side.
StupidExtravert 2 years ago
The destruction and subsequent rebuilding of all of Europe and most of Asia turned us into the economic powerhouse that we are today. The war also brought an increased demand for goods as most of the other countries work force was dedicated more to fighting than manufacturing, that is what turned the depression around. But I agree nobody in Congress fixed it and Im sure an economic recovery was the last thing on FDRs mind when he proposed a declaration of war.
kungfoochicken08 2 years ago
Good point...Our current problem is that we really don't have very many manufacturing jobs anymore, we gave them all away to other countries. Our country is service based, which is really unsustainable in a "global economy". We've all but stopped making physical goods.

Cut cost on things we're doing now that don't make sense, and provide the American people with the things we need to go on in the future.
nycshay82 2 years ago
xj2yzz: It really doesn't matter at this point.

Our post office is about to hit bankrupcy (my dad is being FORCED into retirement, and he really doesn't want to because he'll lose some retirement pay). The New Deal was a failure and dont let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise. Unemployment never fell below 17% and averaged 25% up until the build up to WW2. The new deal didnt end the depression, WW2 did. Fire Departments, Police Departments, and libraries are all local and state run (minus FBI and CIA, etc etc), our agriculture subsidization is killing any competition between farmers and artificially keeping prices high, student loans are outsourced to for-profit corporations...
kungfoochicken08 2 years ago
Unemployment was at 25% when FDR took office. It was at 15% at the end of his first 4 years in office. So is it just a coincidence that the largest drop in unemployment in any single presidential term in history happened during the introduction to the new deal?
Btw, even if it was WWII that officially ended the Great Depression, wasn't WWII big government spending?

ghost1946 2 years ago
Medicare and the plans that Congress get are different. Medicare has a screwy compensation system that underpays doctors and is quite complex. Congress gets to choose what plan they want, as supposed to the government. Either way, imposing either plan nationwide is entirely different than just among a section of Americans. The government, unlike private companies has no way effective way to control costs besides rationing and no incentive to make itself more efficient, thus leading to waste.

We all get the shitty universal health insurance while they get everything covered.
falltwoep 2 years ago
God, they completely miss the point. The point is the elites and privileged class will always make the best services available to themselves and get to the head of the line, while everyone else has "universal" access to rationing and long waits. And in what fucking universe can the thievery the privileged classes have access to be distributed to 300 million people???--what with a trillion dollar deficit thanks to the left's savior ! Fucking clueless idiots.

Or the 5 trillion deficit left by the right's savior.

Obama's Politics of Collective Redemption
By Kyle-Anne Shiver
And in this seemingly redemptive offering, Obama may be promising what only God can actually deliver, in the form of yet another, more eloquent, version of the same old utopian dream that started with Rousseau and Marx.

Grassley says he works for the government. He is a Senator, and he works for the people of Iowa. he works for WE THE PEOPLE. Only in Government would the employees receive a better health care plan than the employer. Grassley makes money by not understanding the health care crisis. This anti abortion moron only cares about children until they exit the birth canal. After that, they are on their own, unless a parent works for the federal government. He has selective morallity.
bpartoens 2 years ago 2
Republicans support a system that refuses to treat children with cancer. This is what thay want to defend as their system. A Govt plan will force competition and a moral compass on Republicans and their Corporate Health Care Handlers.
Do Republicans know that in the not to distant future we will be showing their little CSPAN corporate financed dramas as evidence in criminal courts.
They have sold America out over the past 30 years and now they will be exposed using their own words.
MrAntiRepublican 2 years ago 2
You guys are full of crap. Grassley wasn't saying governmental healthcare, aka UNIVERSAL healthcare was the best. Just that the plan he had by being a U.S. Senator was the best.
But nice misleading title. Great work.

When will the stupid American population come up scale and clear up there misunderstandings on there Federal Constitution.
gkgreger 2 years ago
gkgregerYes they interpret common welfare broadly when it suits them and very narrowly when it suits them. We have no rule of law in this country. There are no standards. Just whatever the corporations throught their lobbyists and contributions and their Congressional tools feel like doing.

Also these guys are morons because if everyone had a plan that was as good as federal government employees it would bankrupt the united states. The costs would be astronomical. The fact that health care reform is even on the table during a recession is the world's biggest joke. We cannot afford to do anything that will increase costs to the taxpayer.
nateshack126 2 years ago
"it would bankrupt the united states (sic)"
Would it now? Would it really?
Last I checked, Canada hasn't gone bancrupt. Seems like I might have a point there.
bluetwinky 2 years ago
Introducing it is what will cost money. Canada has had it for a while. Next time, use logic.
CaptainVideo890 2 years ago
also, the cost of the iraq war, which is
astronomically' more expensive then healthcare. like hundreds of times more. it wouldnt be much of a bruden, its justice, and during a recession is the best time as so many peoples insurance are at risk
njchampnj 2 years ago
nateshack126: You have to be kidding. The government is pissing money away just to be spending it to provide stimulus to the economy. Why can't the economy be stimulated by spending on worhtwhile things people can use?
klard 2 years ago
Because citizens would spend it on paying off debt and consumer products which were manufactured overseas. Only a small part of stimulus given to citizens is spent in a way that adds to the GDP.
Spending it on projects and infrastructure creates jobs which gives people that money in end too, but we get things like roads and schools in the process.
