The blood test was done to make sure that the bride and groom didn't have syphilis. I'm not sure if they tested for anything else. We had to have the test done within a month of getting married. To be honest, I don't know if they still have people do it anymore.

Well I read in wikipedia that it wasn't a spell, but rather her human form is only temporary for 6 days, so she had to wet her tail in the bathtub. And the sea hag said if she was on land past 6 days she wouldn't be able to change back into a mermaid. But, since she was caught and put in the sea water tank, she never became human permenantly.
