  • the beatles, the Who, the Jam' the peach boys im gonna take steal or borrow from whomever! its a form of flattery"keeps it real for me,last 30 years,,,,,,,,,,,Its the power of love .Not the love of power!....peace

  • think the beach boys should take the credit on this one

  • this actually does sound like the jam song.

  • Umm, no, The Jam did not "rip off" this song. It's the same title and as a couple of people have mentioned, Weller et al were Who fans, but The Jam's song is completely different. In fact it's sentiments could not be more different to Townshend's song.

  • @goonersainter This was written by John. just FYI

also the only people on this track were john and keith(Pete might have overdubbed a bit, though.)

  • @spudmuffin99 It was written by John AND Keith, and later Pete did overdub a guitar part, but I'm not sure about this recording exactly...

  • @gf45100 Thats a fucking lie, they were inspired by the who just like loads of others. dick.

  • @gf45100 not really you downer it dosent sound the same or the lyrics

  • There's also a cover version (with a bit faster tempo) of this song by a Finnish rock group, Eppu Normaali.

  • Bad ass!!! I love that it started out as an amazing Keith and John jam, but Pete's dope ass guitar and Pete and Rog's vocals added to it help make this a top rank Who classic!

  • The inspiration for In The City, Ronnie & The Daytonas, Hey Little Girl, same melody, same chords, sweet :)

  • The jam's version isn't a cover. They loved the Who though like every other sane person.

  • Very Cool. Keith exercising his passion for surf music.

  • keith was a surfing music fan

this is his take on it

  • one day Keith and John were in the recording studio, Roger and Pete weren't there so they decided to record this song than Pete overdubbed some guitars! Amazing!

  • This is a new one on me, I really like it. I can hear where the Jam got the idea for 'In the City' from!

  • @LeeJTurnock

It was also covered by Swervedriver.

  • @LeeJTurnock Yes...I've been reading Paolo Hewitt's book The Changing Man and he mentions this. Very derivative of The Who's song - wonder if he'd get away with it now? :-)

  • What is the instrument at the beginning, it sounds like some type of large horn, maybe baritone, a large tuba?

  • @havepie I'm gonna guess French horn since Enthwistle played one.

  • @Modstar Nah, Unless its some very odd mixing, Its some type of very large horn.

  • 5*****

  • Fantastic - thanks x

  • You can really hear Kieths drumming in the one. Thanks for the memory! ^5. P.s. i dig these old ones of theres, what a blast. Thanks.Best regards Thomas.
