  • No,15 watts vs 5 watts is NOT "three times more efficient." It is TWO times more efficient. A Geek should know his math. The important word in the statement is "more." Zero times more efficient would be of equal wattage. One time MORE efficient is 1/2 the wattage. Two times more is 1/3. <<--Bingo! Three times more would be 1/4. Oops, that's a lie!!

  • CFL Flourescents contain mercury while LEDs do not. Never vacuum up shards of a broken CFL bulb as the vacuum can disperse the mercury in the air and into your house. Try and use a dust pan and broom where ever possible and dispose the shards responsibly.

  • You need to update this video unless you already have but the LED light bulb has advance a little better and the price has come down quite a bit more.

  • What does this guy have against space heaters? It's 27 degrees here. I don't mind a little extra heat from my lights. If light bulbs waste most of its energy as heat, then that means my furnace wastes all of its energy as heat. Should we outlaw furnaces and space heaters?

  • CFL';s more environmentally freindly? WRONG!. teh are more toxic and it is much more harmful to teh environment to manufacture these things. and it produces high levels of electromagnetic radiation and what they call dirty electricity. to put it a simple way. use CFL's get cancer. Get it? LED's are ok but still contain carcinogenic material. incandescent is the safest as far as your health and the environment is concerned. look at the waste produced form manufacturing. you'll see.

  • "Eco" Geek huh? Funny how this ecogeek failed to mention the environmentally poisonous mercury that is in every CFL bulb. And if you drop and break it in your house you have to call a HazMat team to come and dispose of it.

  • with the communist ban....we wont even be able to COMPARE the lights....nice one dictator Obama....

  • 2011....did they improve the light bulb...and also made it cheaper?

  • great so the fan gets filled with dust dies and the LED burns your house down.

  • THis video is very old - it's 2011 so they must have improved the LEDs

  • CFL's give me a headache there bad for your health you can keep them fucking things I will never use them.

  • i really would like so much to have one of that LED light with fan...its might be kinda cool growing my herbs inside...unluckily its not available in my country..i hope you can have it as a DIY project,,,bonglim72@yahoo.com

  • These Bulbs cost way to much. I bought a crap load of CFL or whatever they are called and I saw very little if any change on my monthly bill. I was quite bummed.

  • Btw, I have over 200 bulb applications in my home. Imagine spending 30 to 50 bucks times 200. Hell no. lol

  • @edward099: where do you live? A casino in Las Vegas?

  • Nice video sir, I have been using cfl bulbs from sylvania, and they are not that bad. Exept for the mercury it poseses, but its still good for my wallet. In order for me to switch to LED they would have to lower their prices cause them cheap ones from american lighting dont last.

  • this is the BEST video ever, i'm not even kidding. Thank you so much for this very informative video because I am actually doing a light study comparison between LED vs. incandescent vs. CFL's using the Revit program. I'm an interior design student and will be doing an analysis of these light bulbs for my final presentation. I wish I had won that LED lightbulb! But thank you again!

  • 50,000 hours would be like... 5 straight years.

  • But how much chemicals and shit would be put in the enviro-friendly ones?

  • I want that bulb! but im a few years late.

  • What about efficient Grow Lights? I have looked at some of the LED Grow Lights and they are expensive and use a lot of wattage. Then there is the Plasma Grow Lights that are super bright and cool to the touch like LEDs. I need something to grow my greens and garden plants indoors until they are ready to be transplanted outside. Plus winter salad indoors would be so great. but what grow lights are efficient and give the right light for plants?

  • The biggest problem with the LED is their cooling requirements. Eventually dust will get on your heatsinks, and your fans will break a lot faster than your LED lights.

I say, for pure energy efficiency, go with CFL. But for closet lights, go with incandescent bulbs

  • I understand that part of doing a show like this is entertainment value which you do quite well. I did smile. I would have liked to have seen price comparison and evaluation of initial price diffused over the life of the bulb. Of course you made this video three years ago, so I don't know how much mention was being made of mercury in the CFL's at the time, but I am so glad you compared LED's. :) Good job over-all! Maybe now that three years have passed there could be an update? Thanks!

  • leds are going down i got a 40 wat eq. for 20$, then another for 15$

  • i heard CFLs can cause cancer lol or have effects such as headaches and i forgot all the other stuff...

i had a cfl right next to me behind my computer...i after i read of all the effects i turned it off and my headache went away...

idk if i should believe everything i read on the internet but anyways i bought an led bulb off of ebay for 5 bucks.. rip to cfl users lol

  • Your a fucking tree hugging fag go fuck a owl you asshole

  • @52DODGEM37 You're** & an owl**

  • LEDs are the way to go, but they need some drastic measures made to reduce the price point. Rumor has it that in the next 2-3 years the technology will be able to do just that.

Please stay way from mercury containing CFLs. I know I don't want busted mercury bulbs in my house or landfill.

  • if the led bulb is fan cooled, what happens when the fan gets dirty and doesnt move enough air which will happen in less than 50,000 hours. alright engineers, back to the drawing board

  • LEDs are not temperature sensitive mr. ecogeek. They will operate perfectly fine in below freezing temperatures and boiling hot temperatures.

  • @320bit have you done research into LED heat efficiency? I have read spec sheets and yes, they are temperature sensitive, especially the high-intensity LED's that are being used in these devices. The one thing that ECOgeek isn't saying is that the electronics that change AC energy to DC is what is generating the heat that will cause the LED to heat up.

  • @vancecook7 They may heat up, but they are not temperature sensitive. An LED will work and virtually any temperature just the same.

  • @320bit Thanks for your reply. The charts I was looking at showed that there was a significant luminousity drop-off as temperatures climbed. I don't remember the temperature that occured at, and it wasn't really all that close to room-temperature, but you certainly couldn't use this sort of light to replace an oven lamp for this very reason (among others).

  • Mercury filled cfl's are toxic. How is that good for the environment. You guys are tarded.

  • i don't know why you're making comparisons. It's not like this tyrannical administration is going to allow anybody to choose. It's not the American way to force people to use a certain product and then convince them it's better.

It's amazing that there are people in this country who can't see what's wrong with that.

  • Great video, I'm just finding out about led light bulbs! I hope to see an update on new bulbs/ prices=D

  • We are all electric I am handicapped so revamping our water system by me is out the ?. I have compromized I turn off the hot water heater till we need a shower. In the kitchen I have an electric kettle and a thermos I brew a batch for dishes save a batch in the thermos for hand washing IDK how much energy we are saving this way but I don't see our lights dim for the hot water heater kicking on time to time. Working on an outdoor solar shower that would be great energy saver.

  • "No officer nothing else has been touched all they took were the light bulbs and one of my pillow cases?" officer keys the mic and says "Be advised we are looking for a subject with a white pillow case a head lamp subject should be considered broke but ecofriendly strong possibility he could have a solar lighting system in his home." JK but that is the only reason I would buy a $80 light bulb so I would not have to buy a $400 solar panel to power it. So if you are going off grid get these first?

  • how annoying shut up!

  • @TranshumanCyborg agreed.

  • eco-Nazis do not realize that CFL's are far more toxic to the environment than incandescent bulbs. They contain large quantities of mercury, and a radio isotope (alpha particle) as the initiator for the CFL to turn on. Furthermore, as CFLs age and go bad they the draw larger amounts of current, in some cases massive amounts, producing waste and heat negating any advantage over incandescent bulbs. Finally, they operate on huge frequencies, over 20,000 Hz.

    LED is the future.

  • @biped19 maybe. LEDs are a good option.

  • Shut up!!!

  • I am looking for a Full Stectrum LED Incandescent Bayonet Bulb. Any ideas?

  • let's see which bulbs hold up best to 3-way touch lamps and dimmers.....!

  • by the way I just have to ask this simple question if you don't mind.

how much lumen does the 40 watts led light make compared to the 40 watt cfl?

  • LEDs are slowly getting ready for prime time. I've already replaced a large number of my incadsescents in the house with CFLs, will replace with LEDs as I can afford (they ARE a bit more expensive, savings only come with time).

  • yeaaa cfl bulbs are horrible and u sound so geeky :)

  • It turns out both CFLs and LEDs contain toxic chemicals. A better solution, 1 always turn out lights you are not using, 2 have fewer children.

  • @calamagrostis88 Yeah, but the LED will not spread the toxic chemicals in your house if you drop them requiring you to detox the room. CFLs as a replacement for incandescents is BAD for the environment. LED's are OK.

  • Also the nerdery, intensity, and passion you have turns me way off, as it will 99% of people. So the question is, are you trying to get people to buy bulbs, or are you trying to get laid by eco chicks? I think it's the latter.

  • I think the CFL and the LED make you look like a zombie. CFL bulbs have ZERO hope of fixing that problem. It's a scientific fact. However, LED bulbs have hope. I hope some day to replace ALL of my Incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs, but we're not there yet. We're getting close, but it's just not quite right yet. I don't care about money one way or the other. I don't care how much I save up front, or down the road, I only care that the light doesn't make me wish to be dead like CFL bulbs do

  • A 20 watt equivalent bulb? That's just silly. There's potential with LED bulbs, but even the new Philips 60 watt equivalents are $40 a piece. With an initial price like that, you'd better make sure you're replacing a light that's used almost constantly.

  • 50 dollars for the LED bulb!!!! I have 40 sockettes!!!! 50x40=2000!!!!!!!! for a dim light!!7 dollars for the CFL bulb , 7x40=350 dollars!!! but they are pretty bright.

and, 0.60 cents for the incondensant bulb, 0.60x40=24 dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who would pay 50 dollars a bulb, just to get a dim light!!! If I cared about the enviroment (which I don't) I'D buy the CFL

  • you are from vlogbrothers

  • saw the led at lowes tswazer2005@yahoo.com

  • i think i ve crush on the editor... he is guud... with science :)

  • i think i ve crush on the editor... he is guud... with science :)

  • Hey Ecotard. Since when is heat wasted energy? We have far more months of the year requiring heating of our homes than airconditioning. For those months incandescents are 100 percent effecient counting both heat and light given off.

This is a bigger factor the farther north you go. But you're probably shooting your mouth off from Sunny warm California. Oh, and lets not talk about the toxic mercury in those bulbs huh eco... figures....

  • and the little annoying faggot never mentioned how eco NOT friendly these mercury bulbs are. How typical of a thieving leftist douche bag. I hope you break one of them CFLs and get poisoned by it.

  • Really annoying editing

  • I guess I better pull the furnace out of my house. It "wastes" all its power as heat.

I'm keeping my incandescent bulbs. I like being warm when it's freezing outside.

  • Nerds have gained too much power... Time to give em wedgies again and tell them to STFU!

Plus this fucking nerd doesn't even mention the toxicity of CFL... Fight me nerd!

  • @Slave2Reason I am considered smart and if you get the idea that you can take me on then I hope you have good medical insurance. Just so you know a nerd is a person who lacks social intelligence. It has nothing to do with being smart. You might want to considered that so you do not end up dead or hurt very badly with your flawed logic.

  • Not a good idea to be waving around a compact fluorescent light bulb.

If that thing breaks, you'll be rocking in a corner drooling on yourself.

  • Wow!! Building a DIY LED Ringlight and i stumbled upon this video!! DFTBA!!!!

But i'm curious, what happened?! Even on the website you haven't been around for quite sometime! Did you just give up on it?,or are you just too busy with the vlog and other endeavors? Great job on P4A!!!

  • 50,000 hours (5.7 years) with a reduction of 50W:

    50,000*0.05kW * $0.08 = $200

$17.5 per year per bulb (assuming 12 hours per day) really isn't "a lot of saved money". Takes you several years to pay off the bulb even accounting for replacement cost

  • Like the comparisons and the savings that can be had but would like to know when the prices of LED's will start to come down.

  • One of the big problem with LED lights is the way they give off light. The light is very focused it doesn't spread out like other types of lights. notice how he had to point it at his face to show the full effect of the light. They can match other types of lights in brightness and color, but still cant produce the same effects in a room.

  • So what is the MTBF of the fan in the big led bulb?

  • I need that light.

  • yea, but how long does that fan last for.

  • squirrelbong you need to do some real serious research before you go saying dumb stuff like that

  • How long does the fan last?

  • @Blackoutx86 until the warranty runs out...

  • wooo hank :D

  • Yeah, just got back from pricing out lights for the house.....it would cost about $2,200 in just bulbs to retrofit all the cfl's in our home. No thanks.

  • Yeah LED bulbs are nice in all, but they are just simply not bright enough.

I bought one a few days ago and it only uses 2 watts, the only problem is that they are not bright enough.

Just to get a good amount of light in my room, i`ll probably need at least 2 or 3 of these.

Don`t get me wrong their nice bulbs, but i`ll stick with my CFL`s until they can find a way to brighten these up a bit, and make them CHEAPER!

  • @TheCORE87 But still, 3 LED bulbs would only be 10 watts (depending on which ones you buy). That's less wattage than CFL bulbs, AND they last for YEARS! If you have a central ceiling light in your room, you can buy a 3-way attachment to fit all of the bulbs.

  • Another hazard for CFLs bulb that is not mentioned. Overheated CFL's electronics will sometimes burn out and then fill a room or the house with smelly burned up electronic smoke, which even with no mercury vapor in it, this smoke may still also be very harmful to one's health. This CFL burnt out smoke is not even tested to determine how unhealthy it is.

  • @trader0108 I'm 19 and have been using CFL's in my house for the better part of my life time and I have never had this happen to me. Nor do I know of anyone it has happened too.

  • @trader0108 Don't be a pussy.

  • Check out ESL lightbulbs. All the pros of CFLs without the all the cons. A little suprised they havent gotten much coverage. wikipedia or youtube Electron Stimulated Luminescence

  • It's three times AS efficient, not three times MORE efficient.

  • pogopogopogopogopogopogo

  • Wow...You just proved that you are not a Geek...Because a true geek would know that CFL lights are nothing but mercury and are not safe for the environment. "Eco-friendly" doesn't necessarily mean low wattage. Learn about the bulb before posting a video about it.

  • i tried a led bulb it wasnt so bright but it consumed only 4 wats but it wurnd out i 1 monts becouse the leds wer put in 1 line so if one brokes the light not going to wok.

  • another_email_from_me(at)yahoo.com Hope you haven't already given it away (...2 years later)

  • You REALLLY ought to be F*cking Careful Swinging those around...

MOLTEN MERCURY / MERCURY VAPOR ...

$2500 to get your house cleared of toxic levels... Apparently.

    LED >>>>> CFL.

CFL light quality is disgusting - That's my opinion as a photometry nerd/ photographer.

Wide-Spectrum flicker free light is far superior to any "Eco-Light", It's closer to natural sunlight or candle light.

Electromagnetic-Radiation- That's what Fluorescence IS!! , No thank you...

    Only at Raves!

  • @DackIsBack ALL visible light is electromagnetic radiation.

  • Try this with a more cheap less watts solar panel and a battery the more A/h the better ,after one year recover your money (40 watt incandescent $48.00 / 3 watt $3.40 a year) leave yours eyes to adapt or use a floor lamp for when you need more lighting. And enjoy having light when others won’t and keep the extra $300+ a year that you save by replacing 10 of 40w I did it and love it. By using more efficient appliances and light from $288.00 a month to $160 and will stop when I pay only $20.

  • CFL's may destroy the environment and flood our landfills with mercury, but if that means I can save a few pennies per month on my electricity bill then that's what I will go with.

  • So, the LED light is actually the worse of the three? That's pretty obvious when he compares them. We won't even go into the fire hazards of CFL. The last bulb is not realistic in terms of price.

  • Yeah but just look at the shit light they give out compared to the Incandescent bulbs. it's like looking at the sun but you do't get any light in the room. Stuff the Wattage I keep what gives me good light.

  • hey man , you are really good seller!

  • CFLs suck for hallway lights and other lights that you dont leave on for any amount of time. They take to long to warm up and get bright.

  • @pizzaman123 Just shop around for better CFLs. Good ones are almost as quick as regular bulbs.

  • The great thing about LED's is - finally a great bulb to replace the recessed lighting - the CFL's never worked so well in a recessed fixtures. We ordered ours from ebay as they where a fraction of the price at Target and Costco.

  • You're so annoying, I just want to punch you in the face.

  • So awesome that I found this video: I just purchased a rotating animation disc, and do not want a fluorescent light source... OUCH!!! HOT!!! Now I know where to get a bright LED lamp. Thanks, Hank!!!

  • no not better just uses less power they are filled with mercury ccfls i mean led is great if they have high lumens but at high lumen they do get hot as shell

  • Great message, but the method is maddening.

Environmental issues suffer because the proponents either lie and cut scientific corners in order to convince, or resort to presentations like this one that makes a joke of the pretty serious subject.

  • CFL's are toxic and full of mercury. While one broken bulb is not a problem. The lazy cud chewing consumer public will toss millions of them in the trash where they will all get broken in the land fill. Very few people will return them to a haz mat disposal site. CFL's also don't last nearly as long as advertised. I can't get mine past the 2 year mark. Non have gone to their mythical 5 year life. Write the date on your bulbs when you install them. (Only lights you use often)

  • @Vethraxx only if america wasn't full of idiots we could depose of things properly. CFLs are sensitive to heat and moisture so if you have a CFL near water or humidity & having one in an enclosed fixture were enough heat can build up to damage it (also mass production and getting the cost down has made them more prone to failure, like with anything). Then you are going to have CFLs that fail prematurely. I would much rather use a CFL over an incandescent but LEDs are my prime choice.

  • @Vethraxx I rarely have to change mine I buy them in bulk .Usually we will break them. I have a light in the kitchen we never turn off it burns 24/7 it has been on for 10 years it is a straight tube light but same tech. I will look into replacing those with the led lights he showed that are $9.99 they will pay for them selves eaily by doing the work of those 24/7 bulbs. If I lived alone I would just use those solar lawn lights and a solar rechargeable head light to light my path.

  • Can they not use a heat sink to dissipate the heat rather than a fan?

    Noise from fan?

  • Of course the ultimate solution is to build and live in reasonably sized homes which require less lighting because there is less space to light.

  • I have a place in the desert of west Texas and just got my 403 wind charger running and about 100 watt solar panel and just starting to get into LED lighting as i have enjoy a first generation LED that runs opn 12 volt and use many color LED to get the light light hum that the way they did it but it a great light and now learning more about the new generation LED light bulbs wow they are so cool

  • Last bulb is stupid. That fan is going to burn out fairly early, causing the LED chip to overheat and fail early as well.

  • I liked the video and if I get a free buld it will save me from buying 4 instead if five.

  • Cool video!

  • hahahahahaha im gonna show this to my entire 8th grade class. they'll love u

  • I believe the consensus now is to build a darker and even darker light bulb to save energy, pretty soon you could go "Lights Out" for maximum energy savings

  • Global warming is stupid...what happens when we buy these things is we supposedly save money on our electricity bill. What happens? The electric company will raise your electricity rates to continue paying their employees! So what happens is you spend $40 on a LED light bulb but eventually you will pay a higher electricity rate when they start losing revenue.

  • I am one step ahead of you all. I got rid of light bulbs all together and just use night vision goggles.

  • nice...u should advertise some, youd be a millionaire by now

  • the best way to build a business is to have a great product that your customers will rave about to everyone they know.

I doubt anyone who is trying to build their reputation is going to sabotage their own product.

  • not changing light bulbs is bad for business.

expect intentional design flaws and massive marketing campaigns.

  • or you could just make your own and space the LED farther with no need for a fan for less than 15$

  • Do NOT buy the expensive Evolux light bulbs (the one at the end with a cooling fan inside)

They are JUNK. Sure they are bright, while they work. I bought two of them. One pooped out after a couple weeks and my other one just pooped out yesterday (after about a year) from switching it on and off a couple times. The fans on these things die FAST and the hot super LED inside gets fried. Terrible light bulbs that shouldn't even be allowed to sell! Get one with no moving parts.

  • Try decaf.

  • this guy isn't a real geek believe me i know we geeks could give a shit less about how eco friendly the lightbulb is and more about the money

  • i want to get a hammer and break those glasses

  • DAmn you;re annoying

  • @Monticola22 i agree

  • Meh... I'll wait until they figure out something better than a cooling fan... also I'll let you early-adopting nerds take the hit on the economies of scale.

  • Comment removed

  • Is the fan inside the übarbulb replaceable? I think it will break before the LED's burn out.

  • I totally agree with several of the other posters here -- CFLs are NOT good for the environment. CFL bulbs contain mercury, a powerful neurotoxin which poses serious health risks, especially for children. Already, researchers have linked mercury toxicity to birth defects, autism, Alzheimers, Parkinson's Disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, depression, bipolar disorder and other conditions. EPA classes them as toxic! Read their warnings.

  • @GrannyGamer Coal-fired power stations emit mercury - and during the average 5 year life of a CFL bulb the electricity generated to power it will have lead to smokestack emissions into the atmosphere of 2.4mg of mercury. Over the same 5 year period the electricity consumed by incandescent bulbs will result in 10mg of emissions. Therefore, even if you factor in the 4mg of mercury contained in the CFL bulb itself, the CFL is still a net winner.

  • CFLs are TERRIBLE for the environment. It's really just a big scam, capitalizing on the whole "green" movement. They might save a little energy, but how much energy was used to PRODUCE them, not to mention the toxic mercury in them. Want to help save the planet? then skip the CFLs and go straight to the LED bulbs.

  • @squirrelbong

ironically, I saw an add where David Suzuki was encouraging people to use CFL's

    :(

  • @squirrelbong It is true that CFLs have mercury in them, but so does coal, and coal is used to power light bulbs.

    watch?v=cA2E14uKyZY

  • @squirrelbong

I am in the process of turning my home over to LED light bulbs. I already have LEDs in my office, bedroom and bathroom and I really like them. I dont like CFLs that much and they are not that good for the environment.

  • @squirrelbong @ecogeeky I can't wait 'til LED bulbs get cheaper and are more available in stores. I have had a lot of CFL dim and/or die on me. you can't just throw them away due to the gases inside, you pay more for them and they don't all last as long as advertised!

  • @squirrelbong Yes, but what toxic materials are in the LED bulbs?

  • @ORCA4312 Its made from semiconductors. You can go here and read all about it.

    madehow.com/Volume-1/Light-Emitting-Diode-LED

  • @squirrelbong Al Gore will drop a bomb on your house from one of his many private jets if he knows you said that. He will then spend his evening counting all the money he made from the scam known as carbon credits. Blood & Gore as its nicknamed is an investment company Al's involved in along with former Goldman Sach's executive David Blood and they make their money off trading carbon credits. Al's role is to stir up hysteria in order to generate future profits.

  • @squirrelbong what a dumb argument... as if a lot of energy isn't used to produce led bulbs. Sure mercury is bad for the environment, but it is very small amount per bulb... don't break them. I use at least 10 cfl bulbs across my apartment and never have broken one.

  • @squirrelbong they put green on CFL lights because it save more energy than incandescent light bulbs and since they didn't have LED light bulb for people to buy they put green on CFL lights...

  • @squirrelbong You know... you can recycle CFLs at any home depot in North America. Meaning that as long as the manufacturer and the buyer take the right precautions then CFL really is green.

  • @squirrelbong Though they do have some CFL's without mercury now.

  • @squirrelbong You conclude that "CFLs are TERRIBLE for the environment" based on 'how much energy was used to PRODUCE them?" and "not to mention the toxic mercury in them". Logic and quantification please; or at minimum an actual relative comparison between incandescent and CFLs.

  • @Cureousful No. Do it yourself. I'm no one's bitch.

  • @squirrelbong Cheers on not backing up your bullshit

  • @squirrelbong

Using the CFL's will result in less murcury entering the environment than using incandescent bulbs. Coal contains mercury and America gets almost half of its electricity from coal. Over the life of the bulb, a CFL will release 6.6 mg of Hg into the environment and an Incandescent bulb will release 11.8 mg Hg.

LED's are the best choice by far, but CFLs are still great, especially if you recycle them.

  • @AviatorBJP Unless you buy your electricity from a nuke power plant. Then you're in the clear.

  • Wow, things have changed a lot since December 2008 when this review was done. Prices have FALLEN significantly, and the intensity of the hi-brightness LEDs has really taken off. There is a whole LED bulb section at WalMart now, and the prices are around $7.99 to $29.99 (max) for 40W equivalent to giant floodlight bulbs with like 50-LED clusters! After buying a few, I notice that the LED's lightly glow when the power is OFF. Very strange and does anybody know why that happens?

  • some new bulbs are being built with some glow in the dark stuff inside as a sort of cheap nitelight.

  • They glow slightly from the residual power in the unit- it goes away after a few minutes or so. They are much cheaper now- I have been picking up some different models and the spotlights seem to be very nice at higher outputs- the LEDs meant to replace C12-type candle-style small bulbs are pretty pathetic though.

  • @jdoscher No no, this one glows forever - until the next time it is turned on. I have even put 7 days between switch-ons (when I recently went away for the holidays). I searched it on Google and people say it's because even though the circuit is totally off, the fixture may be wired so the white wire (hot/common) is wired to the fixture, when it's supposed to be wired to the switch. (for light sockets it never really matters). But how it gets power from no circuit still boggles me tho

  • looks like good-old first generations of LED's to me! just like the CFL's in the 1990's. I've always supported the CFL's and LED's, but now they are updating the incandescent, yes Edison's bulb, 30-100 percent more efficient in labs. It's gonna be weird if we go back to those...

  • CFLs Should have a WARNING on the side "This product must never be disposed of in regular trash. it must be returned to any store that sells them. they could create a deposit scheme. 10% off the next bulb. You probably gave the bulb away already, but if not I'd like it contact me by reply to this. LED is the way forward, but I think 3 LED fittings (the cheapest one you had there) in the room is more cost effective than 1 super one. In fact given the choice I'd take 6 or 7 of those please?

  • Fluorescent bulbs that are discarded in the trash will break and some mercury will be released into the environment. However, the use of mercury-containing bulbs for general indoor lighting makes good environmental sense. EPA website

  • What happens when the fan burns out? That happens much more often than the led going out I bet.

  • dude!!! this is cool!!!! can u imagine how much energy u r saving if u replace all ur bulbs from ur house for LEDs? pretty coo!!!

  • leds... but you still have ... books.

  • Got an led from marslight (after testing paulmann and osram and they´re mediocre right now) for 24 $ which is still too much. - but it´s bright and has a soft light (milky plastic bulb). I wonder why they don´t make a body with a lot of anodes and cathodes instead of piling single ones together.

  • incandescent $0.25

    CFL $2.00

    LED $50

Sorry but I don't have $200 to spend on light bulbs for one fixture or over $1500.00 to do my entire house. These are for sanctimonious rich people. Oh and CFL's suck

  • At the current Homedepot 4-pack price, your $200 would buy you well over 120 CFL bulbs. My house sure doesn't have that many bulbs to change. Wow buddy, did you fail all your mad minute math quizzes in 4th grade? Your anus must be blazing with those energy pig incandescent bulbs your running!

  • The CCFL still seems to be producing more light, when looking at the light reflecting off of his face.

  • What happens to the cooling elements of the LED when you encase it in a light fixture?

  • Funny to think my 4 computers under load consume a total of 1200w, idle 600w.

That means they consume more power then if all of my bulbs(which are all incandescent) were on.

  • CFL burner down my houes
