I think we are already creating our reality via our imaginations...which creates the perception...as in, it is as if we are human projectors...maybe...none of this is real...lol.
don't you feel like there may be some imperceptable nuances of actual reality that could be beneficial to human life. Simply fulfulling an audio visual requirement or a sensory environment does not replicate the intricacies of actual reality. you can program the vitamin C that is absorbed though your skin from peeling a real orange or the vitamin D that you skin creates from being exposed to the actual sun.
Who would maintain such a system? Computers need electricity and a safe room where they are stored. They need factories to build spare parts and infrastructure.
But let's say it was possible and everyone lives in VR. What about the rest of the planet? Escape into VR would leave an open niche for other species such as rats. They would thrive and possibly chew off the cables.
VR in the way you suggest it has a couple major problems tho.. there is no way *everyone* would be able to be hooked up as there would need to be some people monitoring the system. we would not be able to trust the system to run itself entirely. even if you have perfect robots that could fix things and even make new robots themselves to continue the work, you cant account for natural disasters wrecking huge parts of the system.
another problem is that say the first time it gets switched (cont)
@oojamaflipper (2/2) on, then all those people would have to voluntarily get put into the matrix, so to speak, so wouldnt their experience of it be incomplete as they would have the knowledge that it is just VR?
another problem would be that surely it would only be the first generation to use it that even could? i mean if everyones hooked up, who's gonna do the reproducing thing? you might say thats actually a good factor as it would facilitate the end of the human race but ppl wont agree.
