Love it. My dad use to sing this to me when I was a lttle girl. It always mortified me, but of course now I love it. Thanks for sharing, it's the first time I've ever seen it performed. What a treat.
@Detectivefiction I've ALWAYS found him handsome! Even as he got older he still kept his boyish charm and loveable way about him. He was so amazing. Acutally I share his astrological sign. He and I're both Capricorns and he was born on Jan 10 1904, I was born Jan 15, 1984 80 years after him. I've always loved him. I know what ya mean there. I was probably one of the few as well who at my age knew who he was. He's an unbelieveable actor!!
For only 48 years old when he did this he never lost his ability to dance or look handsome in whatever he was wearing! He is one of the greats that we will never see again. I was only 3 when he passed (ironically on Jan 15 my birthday!) and from then on that was it, I always felt a connection to him. He was one of a kind. May his memory live on forever.
@JohnGeoLuvr I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds Ray Bolger handsome! I've had a crush on him since I was 18. I'm a few years older than you are; it's sad that I was probably one of the only 18-year-olds who even knew who Mr. Bolger was.
This brings back such memories. My Mother loved this song and Ray Bolger's rendition especially. The old Scarecrow really was something. Thanks so much.
@nellminow : Are you sure they're releasing it on DVD? My father has asked me to try and find this movie, as he's getting old and kind of reminiscing. Any information you have on the release is GREATLY appreciated!
My wife and I just returned home from a trip to NYC to catch the City Center's Encores! production of "Where's Charlie?" I love Ray Bolger and knew he had won the Tony Award for his performance in the original 1948 Broadway musical, and the show was everything I had hoped it would be. What a fabulous time! As we were watching, I could almost visualize Ray Bolger in the lead role. Thanks to this video, I was actually able to see him perform this tune in his own inimitable style! Nice post!
@leng21 I was there too last night at NYC'S City Center! Rob McClure was a delight as Charlie! What a great cast and orchestra! I still wish I could have seen Ray Bolger in the role of Charlie in Broadway 60 odd years ago! He was some dance man! Now Again:
Saw the Encores! performance yesterday afternoon and Jo Loesser, Frank's Widow, was there and she said the remastered movie is coming out within a few months! As well as a remastered Guys and Dolls.
When I was a young girl I had heard it and seen it on tv and had also been told that this song was part of my namesake, I had always wanted a copy and now I have one thank you!!!!!!! Amy
In 1948 I went to see this show, "Where's Charley" on Broadway with a date with whom I was very much in love. We were both enraptured by the repeated calls for encores. While we broke up, when I hear this performance, I cannot but remember that date. I am 87 now, by the way.
I envy you being able to have seen this classic show on Broadway! THANKS so much for your heartwarming post! I've ALWAYS loved this song & the late great Ray Bolger...your comment has MADE my day & my weekend! :)
@emilupland About 20 or so years afterward I happened to be on a flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. I noticed Ray Bolger sitting several seats ahead of me so when the plane was in flight I went up to him and told him I much I had enjoyed his performance in "Where's Charley". He thanked me and replied, "Haven't you seen anything I've done lately"?
When I was 4 I was very sick and my dad carried me to the TV to watch Ray Bolger sing this on some variety show (around 1955). He said, "This is for all the Amy's in the world, but for one in particular." I turned to my Dad and said, "He means me." This song has always made me feel special. Thanks for posting it.......Amy in NH
I read someplace that Ray Bolger was singing this the Broadway musical. And he forget the lyrics. Someone in the audience prompted him. So he invented that routine of prompting the audience to sing along to make it look like it was part of the show. So they left it in the show and it was part of the movie.
thank you thank you so very much for putting this up=
i have loved Ray since i was a little gilr still do and always will . i have a fantsy about heaven.. that when i die i want to be greeted onthe other side by Ray.. dressed like the scarecrow... who will dance us off to see my loved ones...
This play was on Broadway the year I was born and my mother played the song all the time. I knew when I had a daughter, I would name her Amy. She's 35 now.
Thanks so much for posting this wonderful tribute to a fantastic entertainer!
Absolutely great. Remember when my Aunt took me to New York and we saw the play, Charley's Aunt with Ray Bolger.....what a great performer. Thank you for My Darling, My Darling and of course, Once In Love With Amy and more than that, thank you for Ray Bolger! Maurene Al Ammary
Would someone kindly remove this from my brain as it seems to have taken permanent residence - such a catchy tune! I'm trying to play it on the piano. If I ever get the hang of it, I may have to take up tap-dancing!!!
i've played that part on stage and it's become one of my favorite roles to date. what fun that was ...wow ! this song brings the house down. it's a great play and not done nearly enough. i knew this film existed but never could get a hold of it to watch this. boy he was wonderful ...so glad i finally got to see it, thanks.
I would have loved to see you play the part, buddy! This is one of the all time greatest "show stopping" tunes from the Broadway stage. I never tire of hearing it...thanks for your comment! And thanks again to boink345 for posting it! :-)
I have waited so long for this to go up! Thanks, thanks and thanks again!

I can't THANK YOU enough for sharing this delightful clip with us! Ray Bolger's masterpiece! One of my all time favorite Broadway tunes. A song that never fails to lift my spirits...just as Ray's singing & dancing does! You've MADE my day & my weekend....hopefull someday the whole movie will be made available on home video or online. THANKS again....CHEERS! :)
My Mother, during the original run of "Where's Charlie", sang along with Ray a little bit too loud! LOL, he brought her up on stage and told her she had a nice voice...that was Ray!
This song is why my Mom named me AMY :):) I couldn't be happier!
