  • haha...what a great way to trick the ol lady into exercising! very clever.

  • Your videos are amazing! But in this one I feel sad for the poor girl. You make her peddle a lot!

  • Good stuff with the fun curiosity. The fan spinning with low resistance was interesting as well. It would be nice to know what the input (Amp,Volt).

Some I think it would be interesting to install a Bedini SSG system on that exact fan set up u had. Might get some interesting effects on low resistance and keeping the inertia of the electron for efficiently charging batteries. Im currently building a bike powered smart grid for the occupy movement, hit me up any time. 1.618 0112358...INF

  • isnt there a loss of energy making it into electricity and turning it back to a motor?

  • Denise is awesome. She doesn't even get upset about Dan making her pedal even after he has made his point over a dozen times. I can see why she is such great shape. I bet he has this thing connected to the TV. when she wants to watch tv she has to pedal her ass off instead of eating junk food.

I love it when she says "I can do it" She is so cute.

I think i'm gonna talk my wife into doing this, but I will hook it up to a car battery and a DC to AC converter.

    Thanks for the post.

  • Now that's going green

  • Great demonstration! What kind of RV fan was that again? I work on computers, and that looks like a perfect replacement for the 4 small fans that I have running here now.

  • This video explained soooo much, thanks a bunch Dan and wife Denise!!!! I just have a few questions:

    1. Wouldn't it be more effective (and less load on biker) if you attach the generator to a 12v battery, then to a 120v inverter then to whatever you want to power?

    2. What motor are you using? I want to get that one too (unless you recommend others)!! Cost and where did you buy it please?

    3. Know anywhere I can find plans on the net (where did you get them?) to convert my bike to a stand?

  • What is a technique to lessen the drag on the generator to produce more power with less input power? Wouldn't that be a great way of getting more power from your pedaling.

  • <<-- austinartwar Subscribe to my channel or rated video please. I subscribed to your channel you should subscribe to mine also. I made these animations (anti-bp) to help circulate. Bp sucks and I'm passing it on.

  • i have a sc ooter motor like they have and yes those scooter motors work great for generating electicity , the only trick is you have to hook it up to a capacitor or you will blow your 12 volt inverter up i almost did trying to light up a 14 watt light bulb pluged in 120 volt from a 400 watt 12 volt inverter .

  • How about mounting the pm motor where the rear tire was and finding one with a shaft size that you could mount the 10 speed rear sproket on. Really ramp up the output.....quick charging and easy riding....great vid

  • The more I see the more I'm convinced I need to start working to build an axial flux alternator. I'm not seeing an PM motors that will stand the test of time. Looks as human power is best suited for battery charge. Even as others said a flywheel make that chore less of a chore. A decent video Dan.

  • @greenpowerscience

hey dan, where could i find geared scooter motors like that?

  • I have a link on our GPS page.

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE

When are you getting solar panels back in stock?

  • It would be more stable if the alternator is actually on the back side cuz the pull action will do better and easier

  • Yeah, its about showing whats the right application for such generator. Pretty cool.

I notice one thing. Its a lil bit tiring to pedal, though shes cute when she padal, LOL.

I suggest to put up a heavy flywheel to feel a lil smoother run and lightens the surge current requirement. An Idea.

    Thanks for posting great videos

  • I have a question, is there a circuit you can put between the generator and whatever you are powering so that if there is a load on what you are powering it wont increase the amount of power needed on the generator. but instead just have whatever is taking the load go slower.

  • @jazzophis

That would be some sort of a Constant Current source that you need. There are many simple circuits available on the internet mostly using transistors.

  • Really nice video as always :-D... nice team there ;-)

I just have a doubt... is it safe to connect that to for example a laptop or to charge a cellphone? or will it get destroyed if i try?

  • Always interesting ALWAYS cOOL. tHANKS.

  • Hi Dan,

Great stuff as per usual. Not had time to watch the whole video as yet, but was wondering if it would not be more economical to connect a pully directly to the compressor instead of first generating electricity to run it. To my mind you would be able to store more of your energy as compressed air this way. I'll watch the rest of the video a bit later to see what else you got up to.

Please keep up the good work.

  • Dan, hook up with your sterling engine. i want to see how much power can sunlight be used with a sterling engine.

  • I want a Denise generator too

can I rent her to my next job putting up a couple of thousand sqr ft. of drywall

  • id like to see an air powerd generator as in powerd be compressed air just to see how good it is and if its really possible

  • I love it Dan. Denise is too cute and is always smiling. I love that you two do things and make these videos together. You two look like you are best friends. I think you'll be married for life.

I had no idea those RV fans are so efficient. I'm going to have to pick one or two up to replace the 12v cooling fans in my lab. Thanks for the tip! And please keep making the videos. (I love the bloopers too!)

  • @conicEllipse :-) they are good used finds. New they cost $130. Older ones like this actually have larger motors and I personally think they are much better made. Check ebay from time to time "USED RV FAN" or "RV VENT FAN"

    Thanks for the comment.

    Dan

  • That was good, you've got loads of nice gadgets there. In case of an emergency, just use your wife as a hamster, hahaha!

  • pretty good demonstration.

  • You might be able to put a sprocket in the chuck on a DC / rechargeable drill. Tap the power output directly from the motor terminals to bypass the trigger speed control circuits. The gear reduction might get the voltage up at a low sprocket RPM.

The drill gearbox might be more heavy duty. Don't know if the drill motor is very efficient as a generator.

Your experiments & video are great and Denise is just soooo cute!

  • All you need to do now is invent the internal combustion engine with the thermal efficiency as a light emitting diode.

    5 STARS for the video,

5 stars for the workout! :o)

  • That was great fun! We get to see Denise and Dan umm, screwing, (haha) and hear priceless comments like, "Keep your head down in case the blade comes off."

    10 stars!

  • USE SOME BATTERY

  • Dan, you've discovered a whole new way to exploit women! You should do a whole movie powered by Denise. Call it Denise the movie where she powers the camera and laptop to edit the movie.

  • Denise is the star of the show.

  • sweet!! I hope I can do things like this soon!

  • This is a very good video. Shows what man can do as an alternative energy source for tasks in the home. Very nice.

  • Thw woman is very pretty . Thanks for the eye candy !

  • Dan interesting that you use electricity to produce air pressure I don't know exactly what the Amish use air pressure for but they use a lot of things that require compressed air. They are not the back woods people they are made out to be they are set in their beliefs. Some use electricity with solar panels but refuse to have wires they want to be free from the influence of the world aka the english.

  • Chick ( Girl ) powered, Lol. just Joking !!!

  • I realize that the purpose of this experiment was to demonstrate the use of pedal power for generating/storing electricity.

But I'd sure like to also see some greenpower that was more direct. For example, it would obviously be more efficient for the bike to mechanically turn a fan or a compressor.

How about an all-purpose rig for a bicyle (like they used to have for the Model T) for driving gears, belts, or chains that can turn any small mechanism adapted for the purpose?

  • You need to raise the seat of the bike you'd get more power out of your legs

  • You are 100% correct Gunnslinger50.

It amazes me how many people make the same mistake.

  • A 10 SPEED MIGHT HAVE HELPED THE POWER TO ENERGY RATIO. gearing is everything.

  • You guys are SO cool.

However I did spot one inefficient thing that you did not mention.

The seat on the bicycle is to low for your wife. Her leg is still bent way to much when it is at bottom dead cinter. This does not allow for her to apply her full potential of power.

A small detail over looked by most people. BUT; Very important. IF;;; you want maximum power from your wife.

  • Great video!

This does a fantastic job of explaining the effect of varying loads in a way that is easy to see and understand.

  • she is good in pumping

  • have you tried hooking it up to a grid tie inverter?

  • This is a good example of you can't get energy for nothing. The human body needs to work real hard to get any apreciable electrical energy. With my set-up I store the energy in a bank of batteries for later re-use. A 1 hr work out is good at powering a CFL for a couple of hrs

  • Hey Dan,

Do you think a guy could hook up a generater like that to a battery bank and stock up on power?

  • does she have a sister? and does she cook?

  • WATCH watch?v=AdWmdn0AnAo

    Wow

  • Haha, what a fun wife. Awesome video.

  • Awesome video. Found a good use for wives too if the power goes off.

  • @Robonza LOL In the old days we used to measure output in horse power, no longer since green power. I guess now the International Standards body will have to redefine the unit in Wives rather than Watts! Cheers

  • What can this little fan do?

  • You need a fly wheel to smooth out the torque and then it wont sound like a dying cat too.

  • Come on Denis... You can save the planet!!!

  • Nice to see a new video guys. Thankyou Awesome as always. 5 stars.

  • @BaurakAle7 Movie directors.

  • Would that drill have any torque? Or does it just spin?..

  • Gilligan's Island Ready!

  • Talking about efficiency ... Dan, Denise, Everyone, look up Joule Thief and SEC wireless energy transmission. I've been lighting an LED with a a half dead AA for 12 days when it should have lasted 12hrs (max)! That's with a Joule Thief. The SEC is even better. Marrying good ideas together is the best way to make a vision stronger.

  • I've got to get one of those for my wife!

  • LOL! 5 Stars! Dan, Denise is so fricking cute dude! I laugh cuz you are pimping her out for your electricity. Keeping her legs strong. She can take care of you tonite;-)

  • Where do you get that bulb for 8 dollars?

  • Pedal faster Denise.... faster.... faster.... faster

  • the movie "Soilent Green" come to mind. awesome

  • OH ShYt:

    watch?v=AdWmdn0AnAo

I just found this, you are right. FREAKY!!!!!

Soylent Green, soy, green, think about it.

That movie had video games in it if I remember. I was an infant;-) actually saw when I was 9 on TV.

  • You got a good woman there Dan.

  • You two are cute as hell, Dan and Denise.

  • Comment removed

  • You would get more power if you just connected the bike straight to whatever it is you want to power. You lose energy at each conversion

  • at 7:33 you even made an old-time reel to reel movie effect. I wonder if Denise will do any more videos? lol

  • im not sure but i think that might actually be the magnetic field from the drill motor being too close to the camera thats causing that :P

  • Hook the generator to a series of 12v deep cell batteries as a charger.

  • shame on you Dan, you should have taken turns with your wife insted of working her so hard. LOL

  • you will get more power if you hook a straight shaft to the prop thingy

  • and if he did that there would be no point to the video..

you cant power something without some sort of power supply. and youll be wanting a motor to turn those things.. lol

  • hehehe....Denise has plenty of "screw power!"

  • You deserve the MacArthur genius grant. Seriously.

  • another interesting video great thx
