  • No foundation brush beats a wet sponge, really. I tried this and it's true!

  • I alway's use a foundation brush but the makeup never seems to blend well, so i'm gona try the damp sponge to see if that'll work for me instead. Thanx

  • oh my this is old :p

you look SO different. still an awesome teacher :)

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you Wayne, how can we give you back something?... Best teacher ever!

  • I LOVE cream foundations!!! Would rather wear it BUT I have REALLY oily skin and ANY of the cream foundations I've tried makes it more oily, ESP through out the day. I've tried the cream to powder stuff n I have big pores n starting to get sum fine lines n it seems to settle n 2 that. Just don't look good on me! So I wear liquid, but if there is a cream that would work for me PLEASE let me no!!!! And btw I've said it b4, ur awesome!!!!!! Luv u!

  • @Zoeysmommy728 Try using Murad Oil Control Mattifier It helps minimize your pores and give you more or a matt look. Put this on before you apply the foundation. I have very oily skin and this helped SO MUCH! You can buy it on amazon or Sephora :)

  • Have u ever tried JOE BLASCO CREAM FOUNDATION?

  • I like how you wink at us :D

  • Can anyone help? I tried doing this, but the wetness of the sponge just made my foundation kind of wash off! The sponge wasn't dripping wet, just damp. It was like instead of working it into my skin I was wiping it off. Help anyone? Thx!

  • @madiiwarsaw maybe try squeezing some more of the water out and dont wipe the sponge on yor face, just dab it.

  • wow .your hair grow a lots

  • You made me a pro! i'm 13 and since i discovered "make up world on Youtube", everyday, i lock myself in bathroom, and acting like i'm doing make up tutorials. I'm talking and talking about rules of make up, then i realized that everything i said, thats what you teach me. Last year I didn't know anything about make up and beauty.

I want to be make up artist and I will, without you guys on youtube, i would never know how beautiful is make up.

    Thank you.

  • @MsBubzbeautylover cute :)

  • to those of you speculating on marital status, macbook cameras (other webcams may do the same) do a mirror image thing so the right hand ends up looking as if it's the left hand and vice versa. Not that I care about his marital status...

  • @sher0506 I was just about to write the same thing when I noticed your comment lol...it's true..most cameras do a mirror image...therefore his ring is on the left hand...but you're right...it really doesn't matter...what matters is that he's a make-up genius!

  • I wish I would have known this years ago. I stopped using foundation because I couldn't find a way to make it look really flawless. I've tried everything: kabuki brush, foundation brush, stippling brush, sponge, fingers... Wet my sponge today and OMGosh!!! You just made my world so much better! You are by far the best YouTube makeup guru out there!

  • u r the best...............

  • could you also wet the sponge with some mac fix plus? i've heard of people doing this.

  • thnk u

  • Thanks for keeping this video! I've used different brushes for foundation, but I have ALWAYS, ALWAYS used sponges otherwise. And as far as wetting them first? Never done it. I'll try after watching this, as in a genuine try. I've put on moisturizer with the sponge first before foundation which kind of counts, but that's a waste of moisturizer too XD. LOVE!

  • I adore your old videos!I'm SO GLAD you haven't removed them!I wanted to buy a stippling brush thinking it would give me the air brushed effect!I wonder, what do you think about the egg shaped, spherical sponges?I've heard they are SO great and easier to blend with.Just roll them onto the skin, they say! What do you think about them.I'm going to stick to the same wedges I've used forever but I will be damping them now! Thanks So Much.As always,You NEVER DISAPPOINT! Hugs&blessings luv! ;-)

  • ooooh noooo...I just got the Shu uemura brush :-((

  • XD funny !

  • awww.... i love vintage Goss

  • Awwwwwwww! I thought you were going to do a "half the face each way" so I could see the difference. But, thanks for explaining "why", I have always used a damp sponge but thought that who ever told me that did so to make the sponge easier to clean after! lol

What about the "concealer before foundation" vs "concealer after foundation" debate? Which do you say is best and why? Thanks:)

  • lovely advice will mos def be doin that..

  • what if im using like the shu uemura mousse base? do i still have to wet the sponge?

  • U r very cute with a good guy charm (hope I am right). Yes, I like ur videos!

  • wud u apply liquid with a damp sponge? I have every foundation brush known to man, and I always go back to a damp sponge. Its Always Clean and its blends the best, its like using ur fingers but better!

  • very interesting! i have never tried this but i definitely will!

  • hi, can i fall in love with you? +.+

  • I'm a guy who has only recently started wearing makeup. This is really helpful!! Thanks

  • Just to the 105 people who liked the comment on his marriage status, for one it is on his right hand, therefore it is not a wedding ring as it would be on his left hand. Secondly, there are a lot of people who ask this, and it seems he never answers this question, which leads me to believe it is not an element of his life he wants us to, nor do we need to know, so why not leave it at that? Does it really make a difference to his incredible tutorials?

  • @TheValueofVanity EXACTLY! He's talking makeup, not marriage tutorials!

  • @TheValueofVanity Agree with you to the extent that it is certainly not our business whether or not he is married. BUT, to educate you: not everyone wears their wedding ring on their left hand... In a lot of countries it is very common to wear your wedding ring on the right hand... There, your horizon has been expanded.

  • @Jazzabelle85 exactly. here in poland when you're married you wear the ring on your right hand :)

  • @madiiwarsaw Yup, here in Germany as well, and in the Netherlands also!

  • @Jazzabelle85 You know - Americans thinking they are the centre of the Universe, as usual...

  • I fully agree!!!

  • " holy grail of foundation brushes " lol :)

  • Ok, then tell me, what's better: wet sponge or fingers (wet/dry)?

  • your so helpful :)

  • no one knows about make-up better then a man.

  • Day 2 of watching all your videos in order. I am gonna wet my sponge, man!

  • I agree!!! I think sponges from Boots are the best, even dry, gonna try damp but im always travelling so dont wanna make a mess of my make up bag lol, i spent soooo much money, time and effort trying to find "the brush" for foundation but finally i gave up n used the sponge again as its the best, thanks guapo! ;)

  • Who are you on MUA? I'd love to read your reviews!

  • "Just wash it out after you use it and it'll be just fine for three, four, five uses"... and then what? Throw it away? I don't understand. If I'm washing it after I use it why wouldn't it be good for loads and loads of uses? These things cost money - I don't want something that's only going to last 5 uses. *confused* !!!

  • @catcalledtuesday I think he meant you dont have to worry about washing it everytime, because it will last if you do so... :)

  • @catcalledtuesday Never become a makeup artist then! You have to throw them away after one use!

  • @catcalledtuesday because the disposable sponges wear and tear very easily, plus they can harbor bacteria - especially if you don't clean them. If you don't clean them, they will probably only be good for 1 use, as it would be very unsanitary to use a second time without washing. They're very cheap and tend to come in large packages of say, 20 for maybe $1-2 (that's maybe 3 months worth for around a buck), so why are you complaining? It's inexpensive and effective.

  • @dyschorde How do you wash sponges to use them more than once? Just running them under water? Thanks.

  • You won't be saving that much money because sponges require re-purchasing, but I agree sponges give a much nicer and natural finish.

  • what if you use a liquid fondation?

  • People are so concerned with finding the fanciest brushes but the damp sponge is truly the best applicator

  • I have never heard to use a damp sponge... Thanks for the technique =)

  • English people crack me up how precise and frugal they are... comparing grams in cosmetics?

  • @sbgitana1 I'm American, raised to be frugal. It never occurred to me how much you can get in such a small package. It's a really good tip to look at how much your getting before you spend.

  • AMAZING THIS REALLY WORKS!!! I BOUGHT THIS MAC FOUNDATION AND NEVER USED IT CAUSE IT SITS VERY CAKEY ON MY SKIN APPLIED WITH A BRUSH/FINGERS BUT WHEN APPLIED WITH A WET SPONGE ITS AMAZINGLY NATURAL BUT STILL WITH COVERAGE.

BAST TIP EVER FOUND ON HERE!!! THANKS A LOT UR A GREAT MAKE UP ARTIST:-)

  • #LOL

  • #lol

  • i always use a wet sponge and i just dont understand peoples obsession with all these brushes, these leave my skin so cakey! the damp sponge is so simple and effective so thanks for this video!

  • I would just like to say thank you, because I never thought I could ever put on foundation with out it looking cakey. I tried using a wet sponge and magic happened. I have been converted to the house of gossmakeup!

  • I use Mac face&body foundation with a dry sponge. since it's so sheer already, do you think i should continue with a dry sponge? or would a damp sponge still be better

  • What kind of foundations can you use this technique with?

  • thankyou!!!!!

  • Your videos are pretty amazing. Glad you mentioned makeupalley. I just discovered them and just knowing that you've contributed to their site gives them so much more credibility to me. Keep 'em coming!

  • My mother, who did makeup as a second job, used this technique for years! I love that you're bringing it back!!!

  • Thank you! I just tried this out and I noticed a difference!

  • @kayteland It's on his right hand, though. There's still hope for the rest of us! Haha.

  • I love how you say "we can" like me and you are in this together :) I actually genuinely believe that YOU want US to look awesome.... and omg have just realized that I have sat here watching your vids for an hour...

  • @kirstabelle82 There is clearly NO ENVY in this guy... he really cares about how we look :D

  • Can u do a tutorial on how to exactly apply the foundation and how damped the sponge should be. Please!

  • were do you get the gray sponge...i love to get some...

  • shinyhead;0

  • He's a real hottie!!!

  • Thank you so much for sharing these tip.. and for being so encouraging and sincere with your words. I am 34 and the skin that never neded foundation is now needing it. I absolutely hate the results I have been getting lately and can not wait to use a damp sponge. Will tell you my results. Thank you again... take care.

  • what if I need full coverage? I'm serious I have horrible skin. If I dampen the sponge does that give less coverage?

  • @PacificMidwest If you're going for full coverage, apply the foundation in layers. Apply one thin layer with your wet sponge, let it set and dry, then apply another thin layer and repeat until you're covered. :)

  • @MixiMorphine ok thx!

  • thank you goss !!! i have tried it just one minute ago withe the mac studio fix foundation i haded soo much because it is so heavy and cakey on my skin. but with the damp sponge... full coverage and flawless skin ! wow !

  • Thanks to you, my sponge is WET! ;D

  • Personally, I hate hate hate facial hair on men (and women?) but i think you are one of the few people who can rock a beard! It actually looks sexier on you, me thinks!

  • I swear that using a damp sponge, instead of my foundation brush HAS made a huge difference! My face looks like skin! it looks fresh and clear without the heaviness makeup look, Please ladies (and men) try this ,i promise you ,youll be happy you did!

    THANK YOU GOSS!!

  • would a damp foundation brush or damp buffer brush do the same or, no just damp sponge :P ?

  • i have spent a lot of money buying good foundation, brush and sponge recommended by some make up artist on their youtube video to have such a gorgeous flawless look on my face ! but every time i ended up with powdery look and very cakey make up !!

i have tried your tips to wet my make up sponge, and O MY GOOODDD.. where i have beeeeennnnn :D now i am having suchhhhh a gorgeous flawless look and uncakey make upppp !!! everyone compliments me ! you are theeee bbbest make up artist i subscribed !

  • you do a great job!! i love all you videos.....<3 LOL :D

  • would this technique work for bridal make up and ben nye matte palette( since its really thick!), I am just a starting makeup artist. I was thinking Ben Nye for now because mac foundations are so expensive to start with ( I am only a college student). You mentioned Graftobian, which would be more versatile for a makeup artist?

  • You are one of the very few people who don't ramble on in your video about jack shit. I actually managed to sit all the way through this without getting bored! Your awesome :D

  • Woooow! Thankyou for making a video on this! I randomly started wetting my sponge to apply foundation/concealer and was impressed with how much better the product was applied using a damp sponge... but I didn't realize this was an actual 'technique'! Thanks <3 you are awesome!

  • I can't tell you how much I love this video! It absolutely saved my makeup-life.

  • You should have your own show! Maybe on Oprah's new network! Seriously though you should be featured worldwide

  • I randomly clicked something and came up on this video. I think God heard my woes because I've been having this problem with a lot of my foundations and definitely will try this!

  • I used to see so many artists not dampening their sponges so I assumed that that's the way to sue them, but my skin always felt really uncomfortable so I stopped using them. I then saw someone suggesting wetting their sponge and tried that and loved it! My skin didn't feel pain and the foundation was spread nicely on the skin.

  • will you do a tutorial of the application

  • I use nothing else but a wet sponge and it IS the best and most precise method in my opinion, and kind of refreshing too for your skin :-)

  • How would you use concealer if doing the foundation in the way described? Would it be applied before or after?

  • This is hands down the best beauty tip ever! I tried it this morning and am so impressed! It doesn't even really look like I'm wearing foundation, but like I have always had perfect skin! Thanks so much!

  • Thanks to you Wayne I've changed the way I apply my makeup - my morning face ritual is no longer a boring chore (with decidedly mixed results). I'm thrilled at how well your techniques work for me, and how easy your instructions are to follow. But the single most dramatic change has been because of this wet sponge thingy - I'm staggered at how flawless my skin looks now. So a huge thank you from a late starter Downunder :-)

  • I think i might go and buy a sponge instead of my 187 :)

  • AAAH

  • Ok Man!! ^.^

  • ur awesome

  • i had a whole bag of sponge wedges that i really didnt know what to do with after trying the first one dry and hating the result... after watching this video, i was like okay i'll just try it damp since i have a lot anyway, expecting it to fail... it works wonderfully on all my foundations! even the ones i was going to throw away because i thought they sucked! i am so hooked and i think i like my sponges better than my mac brushes now! thank you so much! u saved me so much money!

  • @toe0moe wow..thanks for the info!

  • will the damp sponge remove my face primer?

  • @denmateo1306 telling you from personal experience:

No, it will not, PROVIDED you give a lil bit of time to sink in your skin & also, if you do NOT rub with your sponge while applying your foundation.

Yes, it will, provided you apply pressure & rub too much with the sponge (regardless whether it's wet/damp or dry). Another thing I've noticed is that if your primer is water-based (as opposed to oil-based) it has a pretty good chance to be removed with a wet/damp sponge).

    Personal experience. :)

  • The rare occasions I would use foundation, I "dilute" it with a couple of drops of water on my fingers and apply it straight to the skin. The effect is remarkable and completely natural. You don't see the blemishes any more and you don't notice the make-up either.

  • When I bought my Laura Mercier foundation, SA suggested that I bought sponges to apply the product. Love it!

  • Wetting the sponge makes a huge change - thanks for the tutorial on this!

  • for concealer? thanks!4

  • I looooove you! you're a genius im getting full coverage NOW :D

  • Are you Married, I see the ring!

I have to admit i'm a little Jealous!!

    :)

  • @kayteland wrong hand!!! :P

  • @kayteland i know right?

  • @kayteland too bad thats on his right hand :P

  • @kayteland but the ring it's not in his left hand, so that's not a marriage ring:)) there's still hope for you xD

  • @kayteland The ring is on his right hand, not the left. So no, he isn't married...yet!

  • @kayteland It would be on the wrong hand! haha

  • That's quite a suggestive video title ya got there, Goss.

  • @cocowut LMAO!!

  • how do you like your Q link?

  • LOVE d title! :D

  • I ALWAYS wet my sponge!! Wouldn't have it any other way, baby! YOU ROCK! Love it, yet again...you are da man!

    xoxoxo

    -Jess

  • thank u a ton!

  • I am learning how to apply make up, one question-

damp the sponge w, brumisateur, facial spray water? or with any water? thanks for your vids.

  • oh my god! i always knew that a damp sponge is great for foundation but thank you so so much for mentioning about it working for applying concealer too. speaking of MUA, are you still on it? if so, what's your username?

  • I definitely agree with you. right now I'm using a foundation that needs to be wet with a sponge.its so cheap and easy to apply..it does not give me so much trouble because the sponge does it all.

  • love the title of the vid. haha! thanks for reminding us all how awesome a damo sponge can be!

  • what do you think of the beautyblender?

is it better than a normal sponge?

    thank you x

  • love love love your videos !!

  • Ohhh, I have always been using a wet sponge, and been perfectly satisfied, and I just recently bought an expensive make-up brush because it seemed everybody else uses them. So I guess I've just wasted a lot of money.

I buy my sponges in packs of 8 or so at H+M, so I have plenty, and after use, they goes straight to my hot laundry.

  • Hehe the tags are funny :)

  • now just a quick question do you damp the sponge once and then use it for foundation the rest of the time.

    or

do you damp the sponge every time you apply the foundation?

  • That's what my mom told me when I 1st started putting on foundation... If I forgot, she was like,"Omni, WET...YOUR...SPONGE unless you want your make up to look cakey!"

  • god you are pure hotness

    hope you are straight

  • Hello Wayne-- I believe video changed my life. No, really! Long story shortened: I am 53, have very large pores, scarring and hyperpigmentation from 40 years of acne and too much sun. Now, post-menopausal, include dry skin with frighteningly crepey skin under my eyes. I always have struggled with foundation and concealer. Last night I watched this video three times, then started to play with wet sponges. I am thrilled and feel prettier than I have in a long time. Thank you for sharing!

  • i have a powder foundation(studio fix plus) how do i apply it? do i dip the wet sponge into the pressed powder? thanks

  • OMG!! YES!!! There is nothing like using a wet sponge for foundation application. I absolutely hate foundation brushes.

The SA at Sephora told me i was an idiot for using a damp sponge and told me there was no "magical sponge" that was going to work as good at a foundation brush 0_o ... um yeah my makeup looks waaaayyy more natural than you, miss I have extremely noticeable cakey makeup.

  • this is by far my favorite title lol

  • how do u store the sponges?

  • i keep hearing "damn sponge" haha

your videos are by far the best ive seen.

  • i cant find the full coverage in nc45.. what is the searchable name on MAC? (28gram product)

  • Oh. This would explain why I keep getting a cakey look no matter how carefully I apply my cream foundation. I never knew this, thank you!

  • wayne, i tried putting my foundation with a wet sponge today and it's gorgeous! my skin feels so much calmer (i have sensitive skin and had been using a brush to apply). it looks wonderful. i did try this application method years ago, but i was much younger and actually liked the heavier make up look (i could get away with it), but now i want a dewy sheer coverage and this does the job. thanks again! xxx

  • i agree with wolffenhaus its sexy.

  • But how do you keep the cream foundation hygienic if you keep having to dip a damnp sponge onto it? Do you have to scrape the foundation out with a spatula and put it onto a palette every time? Or is there a certain trick? :)

  • @Dottilicious you throw the spong away after a while or maybe there is some way of disinfecting it? now you've asked that i want to know :/ lol

  • you said do not mix oil-based stuffs with water-based stuffs. Is it okay if I damp my sponge and use an oil based foundation, or in this case should I just spray a little fix plus to my brush? God, there are so many rules or tips, that I can really get confused!

  • i love that tip!!!!

    i want some sponges now!!!

    can't wait to try it!

  • Wow!!! This is an absolutely AMAZING tip! I tried this with a yucky drugstore foundation i have, and it looked wonderful!!!

You are so brilliant! Such a simple fix to half my foundation problems. Thank you sooo much for sharing your knowledge with us!

  • hi there, well, i have viewed all of your videos now and i am ready for more..how about skin care? what do you suggest when you don't have enough sleep and your skin looks dreadful the next day?

well, i have a little book of notes now scribbled during your videos..you are a good teacher with interesting ideas.

    beautynow5

  • That damn sponge!

  • where did you get thoose grey sponges

  • Can I get the same effect and by spraying water on my foundation brush? Maybe spraying something else, like Fix+?

  • i love your videos :)!! your so helpful!!!

  • oh wow,thank you!

I was just wondering what the hell was wrong with my new foundation,I put it on and it looked like I just shoved my face right in to a paint bucket or something :P

    Again, thank you

  • Great advice as always

  • Ha you mentioned MUA! I live by that site, its opened up such a big world of makeup/skin care for me. Im loving your videos & glad i subscribed. Take care!

  • This is amazing. As a guy the only thing that ever annoyed me about wearing foundation was being able to apply it well enough so nobody would notice I was wearing makeup.

This tip is the the single best thing since sliced bread!!!! Incredible

Ps. - I tried this out before posting, it really does work amazingly!

  • "damp your sponge and all will be well"

love that as a slogan, its real catchy. haha.

how damp should it be though? if its squeezed out well, the powder goes on and it instantly absorbs the dampness and dries out. if the sponge isnt squeezed out it starts to drip... :S

  • cool o_o i've just tried o_o it works soooo good *_* it doesn't look like i have makeup but skin looks radiant and healty *_* thank you for the great tip!

  • please do a cream foundatiion tute with sponges :) x and which cream foundations u recommend pls xxxx

  • Wow. Super advice. I now wet my sponge every time and I have a flawless application. Thank you sooooo much.

  • this totally educated me! i use a cream foundation and i didn't really like it because it was going so thickly on my face, but i can't wait to try this method out.

    So...Thanks! n.n

  • How about Bobbi Brown smooth foundation? WOuld you need to use a wet sponge? I work in a hospital environment and my skin looks dry despite using primers and dry skin products! Mind you, I have congested skin/combination skin. Smooth Foundation in the summer is very oily in comparison!

  • Faaaaaaaantaaaaaaastic! Who'd have thunk!?! I always hated cream foundations cause it always looked mask like, I can't wait to try this.

  • This is honestly the BEST tip on youtube. I was hating all my foundations, and annoyed about the waste of $. Wetting the sponge did the trick. Thanks so much.

  • 5 stars for this tip :o) thx

  • THANK YOUUU SOO MUCHHH!

  • Keeping it simple. I love it.

  • i must try next time i put on a face

  • Excellent advice. Ever since I saw one of your first videos on applying full coverage foundation, I've started using a damp sponge. Wow, what a huge difference. Thank you for the advice and all your videos.

  • What a brilliant idea, and you are so right. I was taught to put on makeup with a damp sponge but as time goes on you try new methods and the tried and true methods seem passee. But they are tried and true for a reason. I'm going back to the damp sponge!

  • @juliagoolia72 ME too!! I am rejoining the damp sponge movement. lol.

  • Fantastic video ! Thank you so much, this was very informative.
