jeez I hadn't seen that scene in years, and I virtually burst into tears at the intensity of it. Even as a little kid I remember thinking it was emotional, but now- gosh it's so well done!
@Benderrr111 Moments like that can often paralyze a person. Obviously they were on the edge of death and sometimes it's hard to get yourself together when you're in that situation. Not to mention her mother's always told her to never use her powers. And she hasn't had much practice, not to at least make a force field as big as a plain.
I've been a pilot for 30+ years, and THIS was the LAST thing I expected of a cartoon-charActer! PERFECT Radio procedure? HERS IS BETTER THAN MINE! And my GOD, can that woman fly! To evade a fast missile, you have to let it build up speed and stay locked on you, then suddenly turn INTO it, so that its little fins CAN't follow your turn! And the way she led that one down in a dive and pulled out while it hit the sea was... aww forget it! INCREDIBLY GOOD!
@Crashman2 Yeah, the folks at PIXAR always make sure they have the details right. For Ratatouille, they brought in chefs to train the animators and set up a kitchen. For Toy Story 3, they researched what happens at a recycling plant. For Cars, they brought in Chip Foose and Darrell Waltrip. So I have no doubt they brought in pilots to make sure all the radio procedure was perfect, and that the flying was physically possible for a highly skilled pilot.
@midwestconcertvideo No doubt- they have the buxx to do it. The part I wasn't expecting was the use of MILITARY slang- and even the IMDB commentary missed her use of the words "THROUGH THE GATES!" - meaning she is in AFTERBURNER and burning fuel like mad- and so MUST land soon! Civilian stuff sure, but FIGHTER-Pilot lingo? Wow! I think I'm in love. Yes indeed, at speed you CAN easily skip off the sea like that. My Uncle used to do it all the time in his F-86 Sabrejet! WITH nose air intake!
@oMuStIiA Holly Hunter is a dedicated actress, and I'm sure you're right that she sought to get all the lingo right. My point is that the folks at Pixar would have made sure the physics were correct as well.
I absolutely love this scene...especially the look on Mirage's face when Elastigirl says there are children aboard and Syndrome still won't call them off. It gives me chills, too!
Every body calm down... Lol. Sorta feel bad for violet

This scene is the most emotional scene I've ever witnessed in a Disney/Pixar film.
Holly does such an excellent job, lingo and the sheer terror in her voice when directing and talking about her children.
Definitely the best animated scene I've ever viewed before! Deserves way more recognition than it has.

@midwestconcertvideo Actually it was the woman who does her voice that insisted on learning the pilot lingo and how to use it accurately.
