Hi Tim, I was just wondering whether you know if there is any local museums that will have any photos or details of the old signal box here. I have just found out that an ancestor of mine was the signalman here in 1941 when some German planes machine gunned the box and bombed a london train, so I am looking for as much information and pictures as possible
@TheJanineG That's an interesting story, you should look at my old Chitts Hill level crossing video as that shows the crossing keepers hut & the original gates your ancestor would have known.
The gates are going to North Weald last I heard.
I would have thought the signal box was at Colchester station?
I will see what else I can find out.
Chapell & Wakes Colne is the nearest preserved railway museum, you can contact them.
@TheJanineG I would also suggest newspaper archives & libraries, there is an archive at Colindale(?) that would have papers of that period & the local paper probably reported about the incident.
Hi Tim, all full barrier crossings in the UK like this one are manually controlled by a Signaller, hence why you got the CCTV cameras there as this one is controlled from Colchester. This is known as a CCTV MCB (Closed Circuit Television Manually Controlled Barriers)
This is how,We in America should build leve grade crossing .

@Vix180470 If you look at the video of the old crossing gates, you'll realise why!

Hi chaps, it's not an automated level crossing, it's actually controlled from Colchester by CCTV.

@steadyeddy69uk
Fair enough, I wasn't sure which is why I called it automated rather than automatic, I saw the CCTV cameras.
Maybe it should be called a remote controlled automated crossing?
