Pharoah Sanders singing lead for Santana on Welcome 1973 - When I Look Into Your Eyes. The collaboration was short-lived but Pharoah was my all time favorite vocalist with the band.
What made Santana Welcome so great is the mixture of jazz, latin, and rock. One of the best albums ever recorded by the Santana Band. (My favorite parts on this track? Michael Shrieve's drumming, Richard Kermode on the Fender Rhodes Piano, and the percussion section of Jose "Chepito" Areas and Armando Peraza.)
It seems like a few university students watching a live Santana clip in a classroom on a big screen, but Santana Band are playing another song & someone mounted the track from the Welcome album ,I'm 99.9 % sure of that's what it is!
Although this clip does show them playing the song, the audio is from the album.
How do I know this? You can hear Wendy Haas on vocals and the flute embellishments (Bob Yance? Joe Farrell?) playing and they are not performing in this clip.
it does seem a bit suspicious, at first that it is the lp version, it sounds so perfect, but those are definitely different vocals. i think it is live and that they just were that good! and yes i agree, caravanserai, welcome and borboletta are the 3 best santana records. and lotus too.
@stoofbuis Santana, Abraxixs,& 3 The best three santana Albums ever ! Caravansaeri Is tied with the first ! The 3 you mentioned are good [Good for sleeping] lol Peace !
Fenomenal. Gracias por el video.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and played by Santana. Thank you for presenting this video. I feel my heart palpitating positively and emotionally sound to hear my compatriot Chepe Areas playing the drums with such a feel. Santana, you are a musical genius.
Simply Fantastic! There will never be anything like this music with its original delivery and power n magic and its beautiful ARTIST!..never! lets continue to enjoy "WELCOME"..it simply still blows my mind.
This is such a pleasant surprise. I just typed "When I Look Into Your Eyes - Santana" knowing that nothing would come up because to my knowledge this was never a single. This is rare footage of the late great Leon Thomas on lead vocal. Thanks LockOnNow...I wonder if you can post "Love, Devotion & Surrender" from
Never heard this song before, and since radio stations never bother playing stuff past the Santana III album, I was really curious to hear what some other 70's Santana stuff sounds like. Well, it's highly memorable, beautiful, and fantastic!
This is one of my faves too from Welcome. But this video seems too much like the studio recording (Santana never played 'straight' in concert, they always embellished and extended solos and the like). Surely they're not just miming!!
Maybe he's just singing over recorded music. To me the voice sounds really close to the record but still slightly different, as if he was trying to be faithful to the recording. Or maybe that's just what I want to think...
There's not alot of live footage of Leon Thomas...this is great....

This looks like the studio recording is added to the video; probably just as well if the audio on the video is shoddy.
rockman627 11 months ago
until there's the right voice for Santana's there's the guitars chords to sustain the melody, however this is a great classic tune....

@noelfr9 You can't leave bassist Doug Rauch off of that list. He was THE best bassist
that band ever had or will have. Doug was a driving force machine. RIP

While the footage is them playing the song, for some reason the studio track was dubbed over. Where's beautiful Wendy [Haas]?
As i said in another 1973-era clip, this was Santana at their creative peak.

I really like the voice of Leon Thomas.I guess he was the vocalist during the 1973 Santana Tour.
