It's an option from Selle Italia, you press a button and the saddle is jettisoned before a climb or a sprint to save weight.

Stupid move by him, riding with the saddle dangling like that. It was a risk to not only himself but the riders behind him. He should have completely removed the saddle and put it in his jersey pocket. That being said, I really feel for the guy. His arms must have hurt like bloody hell after that effort.

It's Paris - Roubaix. These things happen all the time, and you can't have a team car for every rider.
