oh, and adding to my commment already posted...if you dont like 'em why are you coming here to see him play? huh? why......case closed again! Bazinga!
Other guitarists are fast too, but most seem like they can't write good songs, something you actually want to hear more than once..not to mention they also can't sing worth shit, unlike Alvin who's has several great ablums under his belt..
@cbxsage You serious, clapton invented them in cream and john mayall bluesbreakers, in 1965 and 66, just listen to steppin out cream live and you will see where it all came from
Alvin's always been great (I saw him twice in the seventies), but he must have done some extra homework for this. When I saw him he played more for effect than technique.
@Ozzydethica Thats even worse, im a guitarist and the ring finger is easier to shift up down strings than pinky, cause theres less weight, and less time between hitting the strings one after one,
There were actually 2 "Big Reds" as you call them. He came to Dallas in the early eighties and made a deal with Arnold and Morgan Music. They gave him a new red 335 and he gave away the back-up Red to a young guy in the audience.
Listen to the music! What the hell is it worth arguing who´s a shredder or not! Are all the players that one can´t define a shredder, but plays fast within the context of a song anyhow, a slow guitarist, a dull one, or in another way not talented? Shredding is just a word!!! Many guitarists through the history of jazz an´blues an´rock have played fast, but shredding as a definition came, I remember, in the 80´s. So, music first, shredding or not, please! Yeah, I´m a Malmsteen fan, anyway!
Wow ! Jammin' , indeed ! I think my fave tunes/songs by Alvin Lee and Ten Years After are "I'm Goin' Home" ( Woodstock Version ) , "I Can't Keep From Cryin' Sometimes" ( Isle of Wight 1970 Version )( Jimi Hendrix liked Alvin's rendition of this blues song ) , and "I'd Love To Change The World" from the A Space In Time album .
As far as best shredder ..... my choice is Manitas de Platas ...... FWIW .
The term "shredder" wasn't even applied to music until the advent of Metal, and it refers to guitarists who can play Classically inspired lines a la Yngwie and can mix them up with other genres like Ritchie,Django and the others I mentioned have.Sorry, but I am not aware of any of Alvin's pieces being fusions of different genres,so how would he qualify
as a shredder.Because of speed? That alone doesn't define "shredder".Besides there are kids out there who can play faster. Some here on YouTube.
Guitar virtuosity is inherently a function of the listener's interpretation to the artist's application. The quality of the sonic product produced by technical speed is purely objective. If the listener deems the piece as a positive sensible experience, the guitarist has succeeded.
That taste is an elusive quality both Django and Ritchie had/have as does Yngwie Malmsteen who really influenced the whole overplaying aspect popular today with umpteen clones, but who himself is an original in that he came up with the overplaying style. Those who would qualify as shredders outside of Metal, would have to be Flamenco/Jazz god Paco DeLucia, Flamenco/Rock god Antonio Baillardo, Gypsy Jazz players like Birelli LaGrenne, Stochello Rosenberg, former Blugrass/Jazz player, Danny
Slow down there and take a breath. Just as Alvin always gives credit to Django- Ritchie has given credit to Alvin. The Chimera of shredding was reached with ''Help Me'' at the Fillmore East version. Alvin set the bar so high that still nobody has gone over it.
By the way I have never been called a ''hippie generation Alvin fag '' before. Imaginative!
Ritchie is a Legend. But so is Ten Years After!!!!
So he was not the 1st shredder 'cause that term refers to Metal players who fuse several different genres together and who can play extremely fast. The 1st to do this was Ritchie, and outside of a Metal context one could argue that really the 1st shredder ever was Django Reinhardt way before the Rock era even began, during the Swing Jazz and Bebop eras. What separates the men from the boys though is not just speed, but how tastefully it's applied (melodicism, phrasing, fire, etc.)
I was in high school when this guy hit the US. He's the first thrash guitarist and we Americans just didn't know what to do. I'd just outgrown the Ventures, and was kind of into the Stones. Then Blue Cheer, Mountain, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Great bands... BUT WHEN Alvin Lee arrived, everything changed...
Lee's tone is like crystals hitting rocks, clear & sharp at all times.....just an incredible guitarist.........much under-rated by the general media.....
Eddie Van Who? Hendrix? Page? Clapton? Townsend? Buckingham? All GREAT! Some even God! (i've seen them all live except Hendrix)But the best and quickest, and cleanest has to be ALVIN LEE!!!
@ranmore20002000 In his time yes he was but by todays standards he's pretty ordinary. I can probably name 10 quicker and cleaner. Its a matter of taste and he was very good.
@apanokato 1. Paul Gilbert, 2, Shawn Lane, 3 MAB, 4 John Petrucci, 5 Jeff Loomis 6 Jason Becker 7 Nuno Bettencourt 8 Buckethead 9 Steve Vai 10 Rusty cooley... you want 10 more?
@apanokato I'm 55 years old so I cut my teeth on Alvin's music. I worshipped him when I was a teenager. I saw him in Dallas and it was one of the best concerts I ever went to. I play guitar. I appreciate all types of guitarists. I believe the criteria you mentioned was "quickest and cleanest". Given that, I mentioned a few that I believe rival or surpass him as "quickest and cleanest". I'll leave it at that.
@notafraidoffuture I have seen dozens of guitarists who can play faster, cleaner, but does it even matter? They all have good times and bad times... AND SO DO WE!
To really get more of an understanding about Alvin, I advise you try and listen to the first 2 TYA abums especially Undead - recorded live.. which includes a very different version of I'm Going Home.. Some players have a feel and sound that captivate.. Alvin has had it but also at times strayed in areas where he is not that unique.. a great player no matter how you look at it.
Alvin Lee AND Leslie West on the same bill and on the same stage (on several songs) means I needs a ticket to the first row!! ;) It also means this concert will forever be CLASSIC.
Oh man, I remember watching this on tape over and over again. I'm 26 now, so seeing this as a nipper (what year was it?) was amazing! I also remember being gutted as we recorded it on betamax, so when VHS came along I couldn't watch it anymore. This is the first time I've seen this in all those year.
Goes to show you....wine ripens with age...The Master still gets better..that tune rivals any song by Eric Johnson (no slight..he is great too) any Clapton solo and even Santana...(whose passion is unequaled as well)....Rock on Alvin...play It's Getting Harder...soon LIVE on VIDEO...please..
oh, and adding to my commment already posted...if you dont like 'em why are you coming here to see him play? huh? why......case closed again! Bazinga!
