One of my favourite songs of all time. I was 5 years old when Karen died and thank my late father for introducing her into our family. I still listen to her music every single day in my car and home. My 12 year old and 5 year old love her too.
The story about Eve sounds similar to the Olivia Newton-John movie, A Mom for Christmas, where she plays a mannequin but comes to life...that movie is still available for purchase on eBay or Amazon.
The Carpenters were great, but very underestimated in their early years. It's a pity that they went easy listening and less inspired around the mid 70's onwards. Before that their music was really fresh and exciting. Amazing voice with a lot of soul and musicality. Her brother was a great musician and arranger. With her voice as one of his instruments he produced some really memorable pop music that had the Carpenters' brand stamped all over it. This is so perfectly sung by Karen at just 19.
I've heard nearly every Carpenter recording that's publicly available, and think this is Karen's best vocal performance, even though she was only 19 and in her third year as a public singer. The combination of technical perfection and emotional conviction is remarkable. The best female pop vocalist of the 20th century.
I agree with anthony. How could a 19 y/o sing this song with so much emotion. She was an old soul, no question about it. This song is so beautiful with the minor chords and harpsichord. I understand Richard loves the Baroque period, and it is reflected in this song. I heard she wanted to re-record it, but died before she had a chance.
This song is on my "top 5" list of all-time Carpenters' favorite. I never get tired of it. It was neat to watch the TV episode that you posted in your previous life.
In the box to the right of the video, click where it says (more info). The song is based on an episode of a sci-fi series called "Journey to the Unknown." The episode was called "Eve." I used to have a copy of the program and I made this video using excerpts from that episode.
@NedNickerson2010 The Carpenters wrote a song based on an episode of a series from Britain which aired in the USA once? And it's not a sci-fi series either.

Nobody can sing as hauntingly as Karen Carpenter. She really didn't have to try, it just came out that way.

The open sky is not your home. Wide as it may be, reality is here among the stones.
Thorns among the roses, add to what is real...
Eve... you are a rose among the thorns here...
Beautiful... Karen's voice was even hauntingly perfect and so emotionally deep, even at the tender age of 19...

@boywondfw
True - she did want to re-rerecord this as later she wasn't really happy with the way her voice sounded in these early years.

A 19 year old shouldn't be able to sing this type of song so well - it's too sad & deep & from a troubled soul.

Hauntingly beautiful. Carpenters were producing magnificent work up until about 1975, then started repeating themselves.

@improvguru Their health was faltering. I believe if Karen didn't die in 1983, they would have had a comeback

This was one of a handful of songs on which Karen played bass guitar as well as drums, having been taught the bas(s)ics by Joe Osborne.
