Btw, it is not that he doesn't want to appear in front of her, but becoz humans can only see humans, if u noe wat i mean.. The ending means that the male leading character has died and came back to watch her sing on the stage, as a promise made one yr ago.. The paper plane signifies him, as he is known as "small plane" to the female leading character, while the latter is known as "small boat"..

In case u do not know of chinese tradition, it is true that the first row of the seats is reserved for the ghosts (the performance is actually for them!), that explains why the paper plane flew to the front row seat..

I'd think so. Remember that the first row is given to the departed. The plane is probably folded by someone else and flew over to signify that he has come to watch her as a dead person.

Of course, the other side is not impossible. He doesn't want to appear in front of her and hence, made the plane and flew it to show that he has come to watch alive.

But the latter is more unlikely as his health condition is very poor when he left.
