This is my absolute favorite Wilco song! And to the people who say they were just copying George Harrison, let me say that the Wilco band members are HUGE Beatles fans and respect them tremendously. Besides, every post-60s rock band has a little bit of the Beatles in them if you listen closely. Why wouldn't they? The Beatles were the greatest band in history.
@JDBeatlefan One of the greatest bands. Not The greatest band. Yes, they influenced a lot of bands and rightfully so, but Bob Dylan influenced music much more than the beatles. Hell, Bob Dylan influenced the Beatles. His influence was woody guthry, so where do we give credit for someone being the greatest because every musician takes from someone else, music is too large to call one band the greatest.
mr. george harrison playing slide guitar...it seems! and the piano ostinato chords seem to come directly from the "all things must pass" sessions!! ...nice version of my sweet lord... but "i don't care anymore...."
yesterday I made my first ever song request on national radio for the first time in my life ever.(what did I just type?).Anyways, I asked for this song and they did play it. I'm so happy. I LOVE THIS SONG
I want to preface this by saying that I love Wilco, especially their last two albums. But this is not my favorite song by them; I like the lyrics, but the music isn't as unique as a lot of their stuff. Not at all a bad song though. I just find it interesting that with all the songs people have mentioned this sounding like, no one mentioned "Everyday People" by Sly & the Family Stone. Find it on YouTube and then listen to the almost identical piano part and you'll hear what I mean.
Nahh, you're both wrong... I'd say it's neither a major or a minor George Harrison influence... more like B - FLAT.... actually I hear more Tom Petty influence if we're going to be splitting hairs. Tom Petty WHILE with the Traveling Wilburys MAYBE....
Alright, it sounds a lot like "My Sweet Lord" but I was willing to give Wilco the benefit of the doubt. But the guitar lick at 3:01? That's just blatant plagiarism!
this is the first wilco song ive heard after hearing about them for years but never had the idea of listening to them. i got this you have to be in this type of indie feeling or whatever. i always felt i wasnt good enough or id feel like a poser cuz its the "cool" hipster band. but its just a rock band like any other. after hearing this they are a damn good rock band
I definitely hear George in this! Holy cow! I remember hearing it the first time and asking my friend if it was The Traveling Wilburys....I hear some Tom Petty in it too!!
I had the great opportunity to travel with him for a month doing a documentary back in the 70's. This is a very "loose" tribute-ok- but the guitar riffs in this song are totally George.
The mood is George- and yeah- Great Deep Purple piano - not GH at all- I love it!
"When I got your call, you said you needed help on a holiday project. Can you be more prcise?"
"It will be easier to show you," Doc said. So he did.
As we slipped and slid and jig-jagged through ice-rutted streets, Doc explained that economic downturns come and go. Not all of them are Great Depressions, of course, and some shallow recessions affect relatively few people. On one end of the human spectrum there are those who make a boatload of money, and spend downtime wherever and whenever.
@talktalk666 Sure, I agree with you, I do. .. But if you're going to rehash then why rehash crap like this - y'know what I mean? Sorry but this "Sounds like" ELO without any talent! No offense meant, for real. I respect these guys but they are so PEDESTRIAN.
@nonewmccarthyism So you're smart enough to come to the conclusion that all music is rehash..yet too stupid to realize that music taste is ones own opinion and each is entitled to listen to what they like. Wasted arguement..a much more beneficial debate might be over favorite colors.
@TheChronicJuice Hay grumpy pants... no one's saying anything about others' tastes.. the objective here is to 'read AND understand' the comments before making your replies. You failed to do that, but you certainly did give us an inkling as your disposition, in general. I simply stated MY views.. Not anyone else's and certainly not what I think anyone else SHOULD think. And by the way there actually is a debate here: Why rehash crap?My opinion: BORING..... I'd rather hear your favorite color
@talktalk666 I don't like hearing the same song re-created over and over again. Not saying Wilco is bad, but this song is way too similar to My Sweet Lord.
It's funny you're all comparing this to My Sweet Lord because Harrison was convicted of plagiarizing it from He's So Fine. Personally I don't think any of these songs are very similar except in some fairly superficial ways.
stop crying on youtube, samoth175. there are support groups out there for people with anxiety and depression. so cheer up and enjoy the music like the rest of us...you never know.
this song is legit.. you know they used that george harrison riff on purpose.. no way they did that and was like "yeah that sounds good! we wrote a great song! sound familiar though.. i dont know" good song though
This is a pretty good song, for the most part. I like the music a lot, but I personally feel the lyrics are kind of smug, kind of arrogant in a couple places. Its easy for Wilco to say some of this. But many of us are really struggling, and I don't think its anything to dismiss.
Way to miss the point. They are singing about end of world feelings that are typical of each generation. Nothing is being dismissed other than people who think the world is about to end. Many of us are struggling, yes - I lost my house and my job. I still don't think the world will end though.
@PogoSprings You were pretty close with that TW reference. This song totally is the riff from Tom Petty's, "Jammin' Me", written by him and Bob Dylan. Listen for yourself...

"Tweedy lost it and is totally up his own arse"......agree with you 100%. They need to figure out what they are all about and stick with it. Playing a free gig at such an event as the 2010 Olympics and also perform works from Woody Guthrie has got me confused as to what they are all about and their collective principles as a band. Sell outs if you ask me...
so tweedy is influenced by george harrison BFD. when i ask my best friend who his favorite music artists are he tells me harrison then tweedy...what a fucking weirdo, huh?
Lots of comments about the Beatles/Wilburys similarities and yet no one has mentioned that the phrase "I Don't Care Anymore" is not only the hook of this song. but also the name of a George harrison song. (And please no YouTube idiots telling me that it was Phil Collins not George who sang 'I Don't Care Anymore'.)
The chorous of the song has clear references to the chorous in "I'm happy just to dance with you" by Lennon/McCartney, performed by The Beatles and sung by.... George Harrison! There you go.
P.S. If you want some more great George Harrison slide guitar, listen to "This Is Love" from the Cloud Nine album (everybody knows that album... it's the one that featured "Got My Mind Set On You").
I, too, thought it was George Harrison when I heard it yesterday; some of it was the voice, but mostly the slide guitar. I knew the main vocal in the song did not truly sound like George, so I thought it was Tom Petty singing, as part of a Traveling Wilburys song (which would include Harrison). I remembered George had done a song called "Don't Care Anymore". Hadn't heard the song in years, so I thought maybe that was it, but when I put on the record I realized I was completely wrong.
What I love is how off the rhymes are and its still flowing so well.
My friend said he didnt dig Wilco, but now I have to investigate.
I remember the commercials for this album, never said the name for the band, just showed this song live, and said "Great lyrics-some dude Rolling Stone" or something and that was it.
I agree and thought that when I heard it on the radio. I love Wilco and did n't even think it was them because I was so taken with the George Harrison sound of it. NIce!
I have been hearing this song for about two weeks and I didnt know who sang it. It sounded like George Harrison in parts and the voice was familiar. Love this song.
da intro sounds like Savoy truflle, the midlle of song sounds me Poor litlle girl and the chorus have a lot of my sweet lord, especially the slide guitar
As a musician I would be flatered if a talented group saw fit to sample or include my work as an artist. No one deserves this more than Beatle George. I do not believe that he would have any objections.
I keep hearing this song on the radio in Dallas. This tune stays in your head. The lead singer sounds so much like George Harrison. Glad I searched and found ya WILCO. CoOl sound! AwEsOme lyrics! PeAcE
And the irony is George Harrison lost a huge copyright infringement lawsuit because "My Sweet Lord" was a rip from Carole King's "He's So Fine" (dodolang, dodolang)
The Dalai Lama's head reminds me of a taco salad sometimes and the statue of liberty looks very much like Bob's Big boy. Sometimes when a person is talking to me it just sounds like a washing machine.
this song is GREAT! its nice to hear modern stuff with a little ol school flavor to it...most stuff today is overproduced and "plastic" sounding...this stands out...
Just because it takes influence from another band/person doesn't mean it's copying or stealing from that band/person. Now, if this music is exactly like something from Harrison and/or Petty, then I see where you're coming from, but if not, just accept that it takes some influence, which isn't at all a big deal.
The song sounds more like ELO + Petty + Harrison+ The traveling Willbury's...But who gives a rats ass. The song is good and it is respect given to the above musicians. It is flattery dopes.
My fifth grade English Teacher once told me that "Flattery and Honesty are two good friends walking hand in hand on a path that goes absolutely NOWHERE!!"
This is a great song, but it sounds like a mash up between Tom Petty's You're Jamming Me and any of a number of George Harrison songs. The piano and guitar melody during the verses sounds like You're Jamming me and the chours is vintage Harrison. Even the Synth solo later in the song sounds like a Harrison guitar solo. Rip off or tribute, who cares its a great song.
There is no such thing in music anymore, because of sampling. As long as the cut the original artist in. But certainly, there is a lot less original music.
Sampling isn't near as much of a talentless task as you're making it out to be, and there is a lot of musicianship involved in making a sample work with the myriad ideas you're trying to put forth yourself when producing a song or even an album. There's pathetically bad sampling much more often than there is good sampling, and rarely is there excellent sampling.
I love this tune, Listen folks there are only so many differant chordal arrangements, we have been making music for far to long to have no similarities. Its all about how you use you influences.
people...wilco has sounded like the beatles since they came out...dont understand these new comparisons...they have their own sound, but always beatle sinfluenced...deal or move on...
I thought Wilco was a grocery store until just now.

Wilco ripped off three songs here:
The verse is almost identical to Robert Pollard's "Love Is Stronger Than Witchcraft"
The Chorus IS identical to the chorus of Guided By Voices' "Little Whirl"
And the whole thing sounds like "My Sweet Lord" (especially the riff @3:01)

What I love is how off the rhymes are and its still flowing so well.
My friend said he didnt dig Wilco, but now I have to investigate.
I remember the commercials for this album, never said the name for the band, just showed this song live, and said "Great lyrics-some dude Rolling Stone" or something and that was it.
And now...now I have found it.

Sure it's Harrison... Some slide-parts are literally the same as the ones on My Sweet Lord.
But that's okay ;)

I agree and thought that when I heard it on the radio. I love Wilco and did n't even think it was them because I was so taken with the George Harrison sound of it. NIce!

As a musician I would be flatered if a talented group saw fit to sample or include my work as an artist. No one deserves this more than Beatle George. I do not believe that he would have any objections.

I can hear this song segueing into My Sweet Lord with one of Harrison's guitar riffs from that song in Wilco's song

If you're a Wilco fan for awhile, you know that Harrisons influence has been in their music for awhile now.
Love it !

wilco and harrison Great! now

An homage to Goerge? Yes...definately.... and well done right down to the key, chord changes, and unmistakable slide guitar style. Thanks Wilco!

And the irony is George Harrison lost a huge copyright infringement lawsuit because "My Sweet Lord" was a rip from Carole King's "He's So Fine" (dodolang, dodolang)
BossHook 2 years ago
The Chiffons did "He's So Fine", not Carole King. You're thinking of "One Fine Day", which she co-wrote and later shopped to The Chiffons.

It does sound like the Traveling Wilburys, a combo of George and Tom for sure. Totally sounds like Jeff Lynn produced it. Great song!
citybeat60 2 years ago
Absolutely. If you are going to be influenced by someone, might as well be influenced by the greatest "Super Group" of all time though, no? :)
CharvakaJim 2 years ago
perhaps a few riffs of George harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' in there?
Great song!

Who cares!!! It's a great song, I love it. Everyone is influenced by someone. This song has it's own validity.

His voice kind of reminds me of Bob Dylan. not so much in this song, but more in "Handshake Drugs". Reguardless, its great

Just because it takes influence from another band/person doesn't mean it's copying or stealing from that band/person. Now, if this music is exactly like something from Harrison and/or Petty, then I see where you're coming from, but if not, just accept that it takes some influence, which isn't at all a big deal.
Havenscope 2 years ago
I think ELO + Petty + Harrison+ The traveling Willbury's ect would approve.

The song sounds more like ELO + Petty + Harrison+ The traveling Willbury's...But who gives a rats ass. The song is good and it is respect given to the above musicians. It is flattery dopes.

So should Tom Petty!!!

Plagerism, pure and simple!!!

There is no such thing in music anymore, because of sampling. As long as the cut the original artist in. But certainly, there is a lot less original music.
mjmerc 2 years ago 2
Sampling isn't near as much of a talentless task as you're making it out to be, and there is a lot of musicianship involved in making a sample work with the myriad ideas you're trying to put forth yourself when producing a song or even an album. There's pathetically bad sampling much more often than there is good sampling, and rarely is there excellent sampling.

i love the tight vocal harmonies. it reminds me of the beach boys. it gave me chills watching it live on conan.

I'm sure wilco knew what they were doin and heard the similarities. I am also sure they mean no disrespect by it.
thebends2554 2 years ago 3
I love this tune, Listen folks there are only so many differant chordal arrangements, we have been making music for far to long to have no similarities. Its all about how you use you influences.

people...wilco has sounded like the beatles since they came out...dont understand these new comparisons...they have their own sound, but always beatle sinfluenced...deal or move on...
