  • Awesome speed drill, relaxation iss the key like you said, tightened muscles won't allow you to move fluidly and quickly like that. It also generates more power with that flow, since the body generates the power from the twisting of the spine and hips, rather than using all arm strength. The arms really only use enough muscle to form the angles of the strike and direct the fists, and have to remain otherwise relaxed to take advantage of the "whip" action from the hips and spine.

  • In Hsing-I, Bagua, and Tai-Chi, this principle is called fa-jing. I'm learning Hsing-I through the 9 Little Heavens School of martial arts, headed by Sifu James McNeil, and I've also studied some of Erle Montaigue's work too. I love doing close in work like you show in that drill as well, crowding most fighters takes them out of their comfort zone.

  • So true. Last confrontation I was in I did about half of that then pushed him away with a palm to the sternum. I'm not proud that I had to fight, just wanted to share that this does work especially when your body is in motion with each strike.
