Marvelous to see—thank you! Really interesting that the roo decided to come into the house to give birth. Are you especially close? Did you rear the mother from an early age?
@ScisMacGillicutty Thanks. We raised Katie from a young joey and had her trust. And she was very young to become a mother so came home for some support.
WOW - Absolutely fascinating - this alternative method of mammalian birth - so different but just as highly evolved (and risky for the fetus) as placental birth. Marsupial reproduction is not 'primitive' - they just took a different evolutionary path.
@sunsdomain Indeed; I read somewhere that marsupials evolved the way they did because the ureters were closer together, causing two seperate uteruses to form around the ureters as opposed to the ureters forming around a single uterus. The birth canals in marsupials are so narrow that they have to expel their young early on while they're still small, then let them grow more outside of the pouch.
I won't lie, that was extremely gross, but just as amazing. Weird double reaction, but the fact that their instincts let them just KNOW exactly what to do is unbelievably amazing.
I dont understand how people can censor something that is supposed to be natural. some people make it seem that this is the grossest thing but it really is a miracle.
Haven't seen this anywhere else until now. Thank you so much for making it available here. I'm currently writing a novel about a young Eastern Grey and watching this (and the rest) is INVALUABLE for me.
So pleased the whole series of clips is helping you. Was a very special journey for us - as you can imagine. Good luck with your novel. These roos need all the help they can get.
It is instinctive, and also because just before the birth the mother licks a trail all the way to the pouch. Her saliva leaves a scent trail the joey follows. Nature is so fascinating.
it´s a wonder of the Nature, this little joey climp in the pouch,i read from them, now i have see the first Kangaroo birth of my life. it´s veery interesting and very nice. i lost my words...
Discomfort or pain during the labour of any species are caused by uterine contractions and are therefore not governed by the size of the baby, so even though a kangaroo joey is very small at birth the uterus must still expel it by contracting.
Probably not as severe as humans, but it is difficult to tell how much a prey animal feels because it has to mask pain so as not to become a target for predators.
Kangaroos seem to have a quicker labour than humans.
How common is it for a Roo to have two in one birthing? Has it ever happened?
Wolfgirl2help 5 months ago
@Wolfgirl2help Twins are fairly uncommon in Western Grey kangaroos but yes we have had twins. Normally just one born though.
RooGully 5 months ago
how long does it take to be born?
najlu92 5 months ago
@najlu92 It took 8 minutes for Tingle to reach the safety of the pouch.

So if the baby falls off in the wild, that would be the end of it? Or can the mother occasionally pick it up again?
yawenalice 6 months ago
@yawenalice No, the mother cannot pick it up..........so it would die sadly.

@WeThePeopleRleaders Its not the pain from the size of the birth, she would still be having painful labour pains.

I call my infant daughter the joey because she's always at the breast and because
I carry her in a pouch (Baby Bjorn).
Whoever said kangaroos don't suffer labour pain must have been a man!
