I think that by being aware of the effect of the straight rhythm downbeat of the "banjo in the background", its propulsive effect on the collective presentation of the band becomes more noticeable.
The element of understatement of this banjo style greatly adds to the effect of the entire presentation, as is usual with any understatement in any of the arts.
The purpose of music is joy. It's just like our own purpose. Fits right in.
Yeah man. Hot joy, boy. By the way, this banjo is of the four-string variety, as is traditional in the Dixieland band instead of the 5-string of the other favorite, Bluegrass. But what I really want to say is, do you notice how the background straight-rhythm, simple downbeat strum of this banjo provides and creates a jump 'n jive, nuclear hot background to whatever the rest of the band is doing. Whew.
Great to wee you dropping in. Thanks for you nice comment. I hope our paths cross one of these days. Are you planning on attending any festivals in the USA anytime soon?
Do you hear this song also from Jurbena Jazz Band?

@Casie60
Yes, and you can see the video I posted back in 2006 of Jurbena performing the number.

The name of the tune is Emporer Norton's Hunch written by Lu Watters during his time aboard the S.S. Antigua during WWII.
