As long as I can remember, KHQ has never had pictures of Spokane in their opening graphics sequences. This probably has to do with their branding/"marketing" philosophy. When you watch, they want you to get the feeling that KHQ is representing KHQ, not Spokane, and honestly I get this effect when I watch. This visual isolation goes well with their two most recent slogans, "Right Now" and "Your Local News Leader" - it's all about you, the TV, and KHQ. The Spokane factor to them is irrelevant.
The graphics were created by Dave Ratto, a designer at ImageSync Broadcast Design. He has done quite a few stations on the west coast including KATU in Portland.
This is bold. Dark red scheme, with lots of space and we're flying through stuff. Either the person who came up with this idea was TOKEN or they must've played virtual reality for too long. Either way, GREAT. Inhouse? Renderon? (I say this because of the open bit with the Grid thing. KGUN uses it, too.) I don't know.
KHQ had Al Vanik and they only use Jim Birdsall because they needed a replacement after Vanik had health problems, so they got him before KREM and so they have to keep using Ed Hopkins, but I think Belo wanted Jim Birdsall to do all Northwest stations (they can't use him in Boise either because KBCI uses Birdsall).
The graphics IMO, are very good and bold. I can't stand KXLY's that much.
I think Stephanie Vigil is the news reporter in the movie "The Hit List" Since it was filmed in Spokane.

KHQ's graphics are definitely better than the graphics for Spokane's ABC affiliate.
I'm also quite surprised for the level of graphics. Is Spokane a medium sized market?
