A legend! This guy has played with EVERYBODY! You gotta love the Purdie half-time...just brilliant. I'd love for just a sit-down or to play with this master of timing.
wow, Bonham really did take alot from this to make his shuffle. not saying thats necessarily a bad thing, cause if you know what to look for then you can tell the 2 apart and that each rhythm is sexy in its own way.
If I die and went to heaven and I met this guy and he said he was God, I would believe him. He seems so kind and seems to be having tonnes of fun! You good sir are a legend!
@shdoug it can give a strange sound if you reverse the toms. I'm left handed so I reverse the kit but I leave the toms the right way round. Adds a nice twist when you let your hands 'go for a walk'.
I have noticed some drummers actually DOUBLE tap their snare (on the 2nd and 3rd note of each triplet rather than only on the 2nd note) during the shuffle. For a good example see MVKbzLW6HQ0 video and go to :53 into the solo and watch his left hand closely-it sounds awesome. BTW you have to set the viewing down to 240p (from the default 360p) to hear this for some strange reason. (Curious what you think!)
I was getting pretty worried about those ghost notes for a second there, but it turns out they're just rebound. I can sleep easy now... Brilliant drummer...
ha, this guy is just the god of cool, its pretty overwhelming! such feel and groove, and just hillarious in personality and teaching lol, 5 stars and bow down to purdie
when you're watching him... it looks easy to play..... but when you try doing what he's doing.... man.... its much more difficult than it looks. Just a testament to how good a talent he is.... takes the tough stuff on the drums and makes it look like childs play.!!!
yeah this is from a VHS called Bernard Purdie Groove Master put out by cpp media, Video Workshop series, Rittor music. I only have a VHS copy as this has not been released on DVD yet!!! I don't know what they're waiting for
does anyone know the name of the video from which this clip comes from? He is mentioning other lessons and some are on youtube (Same clothes and kit etc) but I never see mention of the 'session'...
is it on VHS, DVD or somthing??? anyone have the whole thing??? torrents?
samuel d. g. do you Love this video?!!this is how people should feel when they play music. like they can't help but make great remarks during the song because they're feelin it! grand video
My post was in reply to a post that said that this sounds like the "Fool" groove. I was just asserting that the Purdie shuffle was the original, and not the other way around.
Youtube likes to not order comments logically, sometimes...
Majick003, research before say something: Jeff Porcaro didnt die of overdose... He had a heart problem that was triggered by pesticides while he was at his garden.
You're think "this guy" doesn't know he's entertaining w his infectious humor? That he's funny only inadvertently or by accident? Interesting. You may as well know now that "this guy," as you refer to him, is the most recorded drummer in history (him or Hal Blaine). I say this since your thinking Bernard "Pretty" Purdie just "this guy" (who's funny without knowing it) suggests you've come to drums and drumming, like, last week or something. Good luck w your continued musical education.
I think you've been unnecessarily harsh, here. I didn't know who Bernard Purdie was until today. I found this video while checking out Dave Weckl and Steve Gadd, but I'm glad I discovered him and his talents. I should also point out that I've been drumming on and off for 14 years, so excuse those of us who clearly aren't as educated as you apparently are.
The "Purdie Shuffle" was used by Jeff Porcaro in the great pop hit, "Rosanna". Jeff, arguably one of the greatest studio drummers in history, spoke of Purdie as one of his primary influences. Sadly, Jeff died of a drug overdose. These were/are two great influences of mine.
What an inspirational teacher !A pleasure to watch/hear. I find myself grinnin' ear to ear each and every time I listen to him. Thanks for the lessons and thanks for brightening up my day. Infectious' - in a good way ! "You've gotta a gift my friend". :-)
