I agree. It takes too long and involves additional tools. And you better remember to unplug the saw before you start placing your fingers close to the blade! An easy way is just transfer the pencil mark down the leading edge of the board to the face that is contacting the table saw surface. Now with the saw turned off, move your workpiece forward until it touches the cutting tooth of the blade. You may have to lean forward a bit but this is quick and simple.

True "knowing" your tool, whatever it is, is the best thing one can do to be a better craftsman. However to make good accurate cuts when you are getting to know your tool will make the process more enjoyable and not the tedious spirit killing task that has to be hurdled in order get an sense of accomplishment. Live~learn.

What a great idea! I can't tell you how many pairs of shoes I've worn out walking to the other side of the saw to line up a cut from the far side. Never again thanks to Nick!!
