@smartalex We bought one of those machines in the 1990s. It came with Windows 98.
Last year, we went to an electronics recycling center to throw the old machine away. Later that I found out CyberMax's headquarters used to be just down the road from that place (in Bridgewater, NJ).
That keyboard you were using was the Chicony KB-6323. It used the 5-pin DIN connector instead of the smaller PS/2. I still use that keyboard, as it's better than any $3 crap that comes with a new PC these days.
Oh my. Five and a quarter inch floppy drive. Back when they were ACTUALLY floppy. That build might actually play a mean video in DOS using QuickView. I got some 720p videos to play flawlessly with QV, but the sound was an unsupported codec. Other videos worked great! You should turn that thing into a DOS gaming-level rig and throw a Yamaha daughterboard on that sound card to give MIDI some better tune.
Wow, I never came across anyone else who even knew that a company called Cybermax existed, and now I see this video of the same computer I had like 15 years ago, blast from the past

The old PC seems pretty quick at running the OS, a 686 was nothing to sniff at when that machine was new; It would be equivalent to the i7 of today for it's time.
@ZVONIMIR111 I had Windows 2000 on here for a little while, and it ran okay while it had 64mb of RAM. But it was an odd mixture of DIMM and SIMM RAM types (this computer can use both) and eventually the DIMM RAM stopped working so all I had was 32mb and it ran way too slow. I've thought about ME, but 98 is more stable.
@smartalex61 I'm guessing that's also a 360K drive since XTs only have 360K drives and (AFAIK) 360K disks formatted in 1.2MB drives cannot be read by 360K drives.
@ejzllanes96 This is true! I have connected this computer to the internet before using a wireless USB adapter. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work with this computer with Windows 98. When I had 2000 on here it was fine, but the computer ran really slow
My grandpa has a very old PC that contains a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive. Since I now have a Panasonic Sr. Partner that uses this kind of floppy, I would really like to take his computer. My grandpa claims the computer was custom built from a particular service, so there might not be a particular brand name. It's a 486 with either 12 or 16 MB of RAM. It's got two hard drives; one of them being about 500 MB and another at maybe 100 MB or less. By the way, who made that picture on the desktop?
@mrcoffeerush Umm, well the other way around would work. 360k floppies are hard to come by, so what I do is buy 1.2mb floppies and format them as 360k floppies and that works out fine in my IBM XT. If you format a 360k floppy to a 1.2mb floppy it will work sometimes but will be a bit unreliable.
@jeremysart Had a pc with only 5,25's? Funny how can one find out when someone blatantly cheats about age in his profile, hahahha. No matter, though. I pretend to be over 100...
@BilisNegra I dont really get what you are trying to say? My profile say I am 24, that is my age. And yes, my first computer only had 5.25 floppy drives. It was and IBM 5150, the computer I had when I was a child. What was your point?
@jeremysart Holy shit, the good old 5150!!!! Nothing less than the very first PC released 1981 (for sure there are mid-80's machines, small variation to this point...). At least a decade old when you started using it, then. That's what seemed strange. And there was win 3.1, or even 95, who wanted to go back to the DOS prompt?
By the way, these days the machine would be seen in a very different light. Should you still have it around, keep it forever: you own a true piece of history.
@BilisNegra I love using a dos prompt! Wouldn't mind going back to it. And yes, I don't plan on ever throwing away any of these computers. At most I might sell some of the non-working ones to somebody to use for parts or something.
Love these "old computer" vids. The only thing anybody ever does is boot it up and shut it down. Sometimes they'll load a game they're not interested in, won't play it, will desperately try to get out of it and once they do then they'll shut the thing down.
@Cr0z2010 Yes it can; in fact I had Windows 2000 installed on this PC for quite some time. I went back to Windows 98 because although 2000 was usable, it was a bit sluggish. Hope this helps!
@Lukeno52 I know it, and to think that they were shipping Windows XP on computers that were only a little better than this back in 2001. No wonder why computers used to be so slow. Luckily now computers have finally caught up with their operating systems, and they can run as quickly and as smoothly as computers running DOS did in the late 80's.
Cybermax was my very first PC that I bought on my own as a kid! I can't believe one of these is still around. They tried to compete with the "build your own" pc movement of the 90's started by Dell. They were one of the early companies where you could go on the web and pick the components of your computer. I bought one, then later I got my parents to get one - and a few months after that they went bankrupt. Their PC's were very reasonably priced - perhaps a bit too much so.
@ideahunter Hey, that's so neat! I had no idea that CyberMax had that "Build your own computer" type of thing going on. I have no idea where this computer came from to be honest with you. My grandmother gave it to me a long time ago, and she got it from my cousin who got it from God knows where!
@coldlogic1 This is true, it really didn't matter. And what was really annoying is, it would insist on doing a Scan Disk every time you shut it down before this screen. Luckily they got rid of that by Windows XP.
From what I remember Cybermax went bankrupt sometime in the early 2000's. They used to advertise a lot in Computer Shopper magazine. Nice demo, I used to have a home-built AMD K-6 200 computer with Windows 98 on it back in the mid 90's.
@LOLZpersonok I'm sure that you'll be surprised at how much you can do with it if you search the internet and get the right programs for it. I love being able to put old computers to use! What kind is it?
@smartalex61 A Compaq Presario 2200 desktop model, with windows 95. Very sleek design. When I get it, I will make a video. BTW...that computer is a rare model, so I think I am extra lucky. I am totally obsessed with old PC's.
@boost43534 I know it! Exactly why I haven't upgraded my main computer from Windows XP (besides the fact I don't want to spend more than $100 for an Operating System). Although Windows 7 does seam pretty quick. I've found that in general Micrsoft's operating systems are too advanced for the computers that are out at the time. Like even when Windows XP came out, most computers of the time ran it really slowly.
@smartalex61 True, but on the up side, since they're so advanced, you won't need to keep up with up dates until a couple years after purchase, instead of like computers you find in Best Buy were they need constant up dateing to stay from being obsolete. For example I bought a Toshiba Satalite, and within a week it was obsolete.
@Narutoxbleach503 Haha, you definitely have a point there. Sometimes it is worth spending the extra money, because it will save you in the long run. But believe it or not, I'm still using my 2003 HP as my main computer and for what I do it's fine (word processing, digital photos, internet browsing). But I also don't play any graphically advanced video games on it, so for some this computer would be crap!
@smartalex61 It also depends on what you plan to do with your computer, because if you use it for basic things like learning how to code or reading the news then you don't really need to up date. But if your gameing then you will need, pricey, and constant updates, which is why if you game Alien wares great because you can enjoy the game instead of consantly up dateing,I also Love old computers, because they are great to learn anything on.If you can work the old stuff you can work the new stuff.
@gaqthsaswttpiu no its not you should hear my old young micro server it has an all steel case even the front face the computer is 5feet tall and 5 feet long one foot wide its amplifys the sound of the drives sounds like a table saw starting up when you press the power button
@simon1234simon It actually did come with Windows 95, but I think it crashed so I had to reinstall Windows. The reason why I didn't install Windows 95 again is because 95 doesn't come with all of the necessary drivers, since this hardware came out after 95 was released (but before 98 was released). So 98 had all of the drivers built in.
@MixerVM Hmm, it looks to me like it doesn't say from this video (but I can't read it very well). This computer isn't really set up anymore, but next time I set it up I'll let you know what it says.
@kingcrimson234 Nah, I installed it a few years ago to transfer files to my IBM PC/XT. (None of my modern computers are physically compatible with 5.25" drives.)
I had that same computer, I think. It had the same little black panel of three power lights on the front, and I'm pretty sure my dad used to only buy AMD-based stuff for awhile (because they're cheaper). Over the years, we kept upgrading the computer, until it got kinda silly... 2001, I had this old case with a replaced, newer mobo and still a TAPE drive, but I wished I'd still had the 5.25" floppy for some old games!
The Pentium Pro is a 686 generation cpu and the first in fact. If it weren't for the lack of ram it would boot vista and win 7 32bit. The os can be modified to run on as little as 256mb.
@MixerVM No, it's different than both of those. Google 5.25" floppy cable and look at the pictures that come up, it's different than most cables in that instead of pins being used to connect the drive to the cable, flat pins are used.
@Kaktus91a I added that in there to transfer files to my IBM PC/XT. Most computers of this era came with the IDE cables for a 5.25" floppy drive, but no drive itself.

wow that's crazy! windows 98 startup is way fast!
boost43534 1 year ago
@boost43534 I know it! Exactly why I haven't upgraded my main computer from Windows XP (besides the fact I don't want to spend more than $100 for an Operating System). Although Windows 7 does seam pretty quick. I've found that in general Micrsoft's operating systems are too advanced for the computers that are out at the time. Like even when Windows XP came out, most computers of the time ran it really slowly.
smartalex61 1 year ago
@smartalex61 No if you look up Alienware's area 51 line, you find that their computers are outdateing the operateing system.
Narutoxbleach503 1 year ago
@Narutoxbleach503 You're right I've never really paid close attention to Alienware though, they are a bit on the pricy side.
smartalex61 1 year ago
@smartalex61 True, but on the up side, since they're so advanced, you won't need to keep up with up dates until a couple years after purchase, instead of like computers you find in Best Buy were they need constant up dateing to stay from being obsolete. For example I bought a Toshiba Satalite, and within a week it was obsolete.
Narutoxbleach503 1 year ago
@Narutoxbleach503 Haha, you definitely have a point there. Sometimes it is worth spending the extra money, because it will save you in the long run. But believe it or not, I'm still using my 2003 HP as my main computer and for what I do it's fine (word processing, digital photos, internet browsing). But I also don't play any graphically advanced video games on it, so for some this computer would be crap!
smartalex61 1 year ago
@smartalex61 It also depends on what you plan to do with your computer, because if you use it for basic things like learning how to code or reading the news then you don't really need to up date. But if your gameing then you will need, pricey, and constant updates, which is why if you game Alien wares great because you can enjoy the game instead of consantly up dateing,I also Love old computers, because they are great to learn anything on.If you can work the old stuff you can work the new stuff.

MrGermanBratwurst 1 year ago
it should run way faster with windows 95 OSR 2.1 and still have FAT32 and other features that were "new" in windows 95
simon1234simon 1 year ago
@simon1234simon It actually did come with Windows 95, but I think it crashed so I had to reinstall Windows. The reason why I didn't install Windows 95 again is because 95 doesn't come with all of the necessary drivers, since this hardware came out after 95 was released (but before 98 was released). So 98 had all of the drivers built in.

@MixerVM Hmm, it looks to me like it doesn't say from this video (but I can't read it very well). This computer isn't really set up anymore, but next time I set it up I'll let you know what it says.

Your computer is very loud, isn't it?
fredy385 1 year ago
did that thing COME with the 5.25" floppy drive, or was that thrown in later? even in 1997 those things were already really rare to come across.
kingcrimson234 1 year ago
@kingcrimson234 Nah, I installed it a few years ago to transfer files to my IBM PC/XT. (None of my modern computers are physically compatible with 5.25" drives.)
smartalex61 1 year ago
I'd look for a bit of a faster system to transfer disks, and run this good porgram for immaging called winimmage
LuigiFan128 1 year ago
I had that same computer, I think. It had the same little black panel of three power lights on the front, and I'm pretty sure my dad used to only buy AMD-based stuff for awhile (because they're cheaper). Over the years, we kept upgrading the computer, until it got kinda silly... 2001, I had this old case with a replaced, newer mobo and still a TAPE drive, but I wished I'd still had the 5.25" floppy for some old games!

is it a Pentium Pro? (686) or is that the model?
Dell0304 1 year ago
@Dell0304 It's an AMD, but I'm not sure if that's the Pentium Pro equivalent.
smartalex61 1 year ago
@smartalex61 it's not the PPro equivalent, simply because, despite its name, the K6 is not fully i686 capable
windowspiratato 1 year ago
@Dell0304
The Pentium Pro is a 686 generation cpu and the first in fact. If it weren't for the lack of ram it would boot vista and win 7 32bit. The os can be modified to run on as little as 256mb.
oc5nsli341nforce4 1 year ago
you can run windows fundamentals on that machine huh...
MrChezco1995 1 year ago
@MrChezco1995 I've though about installing it, but even Windows 2000 ran pretty slow on this machine so I think I'll just stick with 98se for now.

What kind of cable does the 5.25" drive take? the kind that hdds and cds or 3.5" floppies?
MixerVM 1 year ago
@MixerVM No, it's different than both of those. Google 5.25" floppy cable and look at the pictures that come up, it's different than most cables in that instead of pins being used to connect the drive to the cable, flat pins are used.
smartalex61 1 year ago
If it is computer from 1997, why it have 5,1/4 floppy disk drive? Anyway cool computer.
Kaktus91a 1 year ago
@Kaktus91a I added that in there to transfer files to my IBM PC/XT. Most computers of this era came with the IDE cables for a 5.25" floppy drive, but no drive itself.
