You don't have to kill a Sith Lord to become a Jedi Master. Remember the Sith Lords were in hiding for 1000 years, and there were Jedi who became Masters during that time. The trial to become a Master is probably even more varied than that to become a Knight, depending on the insight the Jedi advancing needs to acquire. Notice Luke became a Knight, by *not* killing his father. It just conveniently happened that Luke's path coincided with bringing down the Sith controlled Empire.
I had a similar situation when I first beat Actraiser. I was down to the last sliver of life on my last guy in the final battle, and managed to pull out the win.

Dracula has lasers in various Castlevania games. At least you'd expect the Devil to have access to pretty much anything, but a vampire with lasers? That's more messed up, in my opinion.
That "But thou must" situation kind of sucks for tool-assisted speed runners, as this is a rare ending that requires user input; typically, the last bit of input is the final hit on the final boss; then, the ending will just run as normal if you're playing back the run in an emulator.
HC pulls off yet another 1 hp victory..yeah, it does make it more intense that he doesn't have a life meter..though I also remember having so few gems that I had to kill the flames just to have enough to hit him.

To become a jedi master, you have to face the trials. There are three, the trial of pain, trail of courage, and the trial of spirit. You don't kill a sith to become a jedi. That would go against their code.
It just seemed like killing a Sith Lord was always part of it. Obi-wan kills a Sith Lord. Two minutes later, "Okay, you're promoted." Luke thinks he's a Jedi, then Yoda says, "You must face your father." IOW, kill him.
Maybe it's not a requirement, but it seems like it's a guaranteed promotion to me.
killing or "Turning" a dark side follower is the 3rd test one must take to be considered a jedi padawan, and after that its just kind of like a military institution with ranks of Trainee, padawan, knight master, and grand master
