Alright girls, lets end this missing match. Today we will learn about AWD and 4x4. First off we will get it off you minds, yes, both are 4 wheel driven. Now lets get in depth. 4x4 - uses a transfer case that may contain reduction gears, power delivered to front and rear wheels is the same, at all times. AWD - uses a center differential to divide power whether it be 25/75, 60/40, it's all divided.
The car has 4 wheels X 4 DRIVE wheels, any car that has 4 drive wheels CAN(but not usually) be called 4x4, AWD technically is ALSO 4x4 (unless it has more than 4 wheels.)
i dont know why people are saying awd is the same as 4x4... 4x4 comes in vehicles like pickups, where you have two wheels driving all of the time and then you have a choice to change it to 4x4 whenever you want. awd is all wheels all the time no matter what, you cannot turn awd off. personally i think there is a difference.
do you really need to argue fuck me he put 4x4 so wot you no wot he meant so stop being geeks and just finding somthing to argue about fuck me grow up
This car´s using the 4motion transmission using a Haldex clutch. Right, it "chooses" which axle to put traction to but different from the quattro technology it doesn´t use a torsen differential. So traction is indicated by sensors and the clutch is electronically triggered. That offers you the possibility to program a setup with permanent lock. So that would put traction to all wheels in individual relations. Which specific relation from front to back you´ll have to ask the owner of the car.
qopa have right. real Quattro is with Torson-Diff and "every-time-4wd",....this Car here have 4 Motion, its every "FWD"...when frontwheels have no traction, the haldex with high-pressure-oilpump will "close" the power transission in a very fast time (0,2sec)..the car have AWD...its a little bit like the old "syncro"...but 4Motion is better & stronger.
Hi, this can be only a Haldex, 95% goes to the front wheels, the rear only engage when the front wheels are loosing traction, so is not a permanent 4x4, it is good but not what you want, a permanent 4x4 with more traction to the rear wheels, it is still a front wheel drive with help from the back to a max 50/50 when required. You can`t control the distribution of the power. Please correct me if I`m wrong!

Ok it's not a jeep 4x4 but it's a car with four wheels drive.....quattro, 4 motion..etc, it's a designation, the result is the same : four wheels drive so 4x4!! I'm a motorized mechanic! OK??
@Enfamille16 That's why you're a mechanic. Yout don't know anything. 4x4 is different differential and gearset versus AWD where AWD is fulltime wether you have a 90/10 or 50/50 ratio. 4x4 you select 4 high or low and can go back to 2WD. I'm a automotive technician.
@gamer1389 -OK for the distribution of power before / defer evolutionary 90/10 or 50/50 permanent employee but in the end(final) this car it has 4 driving wheels yes or not Sir technician?? You play with words, the VW has a visco-coupler has limited sliding which distributed the power before back following the adhesion, effectively it is not a différenciel central! I ask you two questions: how many wheels advance this car, 2 or 4? This car is a 2 wheels or 4 wheels drive?
@Enfamille16 to be honest there's really only one wheel pulling the car because the rest of the break tration so the power is shifted to the one wheel with traction
@gamer1389 you know there are 2 sorts of 4x4? part-time 4x4 and full-time 4x4, only part-time can switch between 4x4 and 4x2, and AWD sends always power to all the wheels, but when the backwheels are spinning (much) faster then the front wheels, the front wheels get more power and the rear wheels less, and AWD can't lock the front or back wheels,
4x4, four wheel drive and all wheel drive are the same thing. I will refer to it as four wheel drive
Four wheel drive can be permanent or part time.
The part time type can be automatically engaged or manually engaged. Either a shifter in a pickup truck or car, or a computer to flip an electric switch on the center diff of a minivan etc. many variations Permanent four wheel drive is always engaged, also called full-time. Some trucks came this way, not just cars
@gamer1389 Bull shit Thi is just marketing and trademark. Formally and technically there is no reason not to use names and 4x4, 4WD, AWD interchangeably. For example Haldex: in VW is 4motion, Quattro in Audi, 4x4 in Skoda and Seat, AWD in Volvo.
@Enfamille16 ITS NOT A 4X4, 4 motion and quattro systems are different then american trucks, 4x4 trucks only have two wheels turning, one in front and one in the back
@qopa92 I know, it's not a 4x4 permanent with crabotage of the front, back axles or exchange but according to the adhesion a part of the power passes in back wheels! Thus I maintain my question: has full power on a sliding ground how many wheels advance this car, 2 or 4? If you say to me 2, it is because you are someone of limited!
@Enfamille16 his argue is stupid an awd vehicle is a 4x4 and a 4x4 is an awd. the difference do not exist. if it exist it's only to the manufacturers wich do not want to present their procuct like a simple and basic 4x4. on one, the transmission switch the power automaticaly on 2 or 4 wheels on a specific % on the other it's manually made. " is argue is still stupid because awd, is switched, that's mean it's not awd " full time " moreover what about a car with with lockers huh ?
@Enfamille16 Quattro equals to a 4X4 with both front and rear limited slip diff. Event there, a 4X4 is different, as quattro is always engaged and and the transfer case is incorporated in the transmission. Quattro has a setting wich is 60/40, means 60% goes to the back and 40 at the front, synchro wich is volkswagen systems, uses 70/30, 70% at the back and 30 at the rear. Its not better, its only a different system, exemple, you can disengage a 4X4.
@Enfamille16 Quattro, synchro, 4motion, all of the above are smaller, can only work on small cars of truck. Its better from this point as if you can put it in any car, but you cant work with it like a 4X4 with a transfer case, thats my point.
@qopa92 What you are referring to is a four wheel drive vehicle with open differentials front and back. Some trucks, american or not, have limited slip diff's and will turn both rear or even all four wheels in low traction situations, rather than spinning only one front and one rear. Some trucks are equipped with full time four wheel drive, some of these even have a shifter to engage four wheel "lock" so that all 4 wheels turn together.
@BCmountainDriver you are totally right, but most of Ford 4X4 trucks were open diferentials a few years ago, its changing now. I'd rather choose a audi quattro then a frdr f150 4X4 not because i like german cars but rather cause its better
@Szajbaw The AWD/4WD distinction is simply marketing. What is early quattro? That has a locking center diff (that's otherwise open). It is considered "AWD". Then, there's the Mazda 323 GTX that has the same arrangement. The term "4WD" is right there on the side of the car. Again, all this is just marketing talk. It means whatever folks want it to mean.
that was FUCKING SIIIIIIIIIIICK, does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to do that, as i have a golf n been told i need the chassis of a syncro or R32 perhaps

it's all the time and it's not manual sometimes...
or lsd ,not manual and all the time....
and like you said it's just to play with words because a car is a car : there are 4 wheels and a tranny.
in any case awd or 4x4 the 4 wheels transmit the power to the ground.
the principle is exactly the same.
awd is just to simplify the 4x4 use.
michaelovitch 9 months ago
ps : there are 4x4 without manual lever to disengage the 4wd like the fiat panda 4x4.
So following your description ,gamer 1389 ,this car is an awd ?
can you explain why it's named fiat panda 4x4 and not awd ?
