I've listened to this a whole lot. Final deal for my ears is the resonance in the repeats with the dm-2. Serious thanks for your efforts. You've been a whole lot of help. Really. If you read this, please keep it together. As selfish as it is there are a whole lot of us who enjoy your gift.
do you have the two timer running after the dm2? because the dm2 has a built in buffer and placing the bbe after it will affect the tone of the bbe. not to mentioon the other pedals and whether or not there may be buffers in those or not and where and how clean they are... blah blah blah... i found the two timer cleaner overall than the dm2... less noise too. theres also quite a bit of variation between dm2's, but those bbe's are probably all the same with the metal film components... yada
great review!! thanks for sharing, my impression is that the DM2 is closer to the original sound, I hear the BBE a little bit thinner&treblier but however differences are minimal, thanks
ice cream truck for the win! the most awesome intro music EVER! you should plug the icecream truck into one of the pedals and play along with the other .. but really . this was a great and unique demo , and i loved the sound you make !
Jason you are the man. I am just learning the blues scales for harp and listening to a lot of your stuff. Just think, when I'm famous they'll say stuff like, "his early influences include Jason Ricci. But I gotta tell ya, this video makes me want a DM2 big time. Yeah, there is no comparison; the DM2 sounds richer. The BBE sounds more like a tape echo, but the Boss has it's own sound, like it is an effect in itself.
i have this bbe pedal also. the boss dm2 decays more smoothly than the bbe imo. the volume of the delays tapers more smoothly. the bbe sounds dirtier to me and the decay doesnt taper as smoothly. makes me want a dm2, lol
Hi Jason , cool test , I have a Boss DD3 Digital delay ,It hauls ass through my Johnson T 25 R tube amp , I will be doing a test video on it soon on youtube, one thing that gets me is a hum when i use dc power input but no hum when using a battery ! any ideas why this is ?.
I liked the setting 3rd one at the end of the video cleaner with not so much bass good clarity myfriend :-) .
For my choice , i think i would go with the BBE - key factor #1 would be the hardwired bypass - if its off -I want it OFF (out of signal path), 2nd - price of course and less important is that I am hobbist/musician in other words durability needed for the 'rigors of the road' would not really be an issue for me ( jumping to conclusion - BOSS equip maybe more 'commerical'/'contractor' grade.) Again - i dunno
THx Jason -Great comparison - I paused the vid just after the part of tone vs delay comp - i wanted to comment before I biased myself - I thought the Boss sounded good and personal taste was favorable ( I kinda like what I heard in the way of fuzz / distortion) But, this is a delay pedal and strictly speaking I would think the BBE is cleaner and much more true to producing delay - tone change is hard to tell ; presence/spatial/ etc definitely changes and may 'appear' as tone change ? i dunno
just to mess you up, you will have a new pedal to compare - the new MXR Carbon Copy - designed by my close personal ferret Bobby Cedro from Dunlop. I will bring it to you in Chi-town when we meet for the big Harrison Harmonicas video shoot.
Have to go with the Boss only because I have one! Love the BFT (Big Fat Tone) it provides. The BBE sounds great as well and may just have to invest in one soon. The sound you get when you combine the 2 is monstrous. I have a Ron Holmes modified Danecho I use the same way for long delays in addition to combining the pedals. Diggin the mic too maing. Gonna email Greg and order one. Jason, you could make two tin cans a flippin string sound like..well, sound like you!
in some funny way you seem a little overly emphatic in this one, esp. in the beginning - positively, I just couldn't help but notice. don't let anyone or anything EVER bring you down, bro, you're an absolute exception of the rule, you heard!?
ps: for how much would you come over & play @ my wedding?
Hey Maz, Thanks man your impressions were correct sir, I was having an issue at home on this day but all is cool. Hey I bet were cheaper than those actual wedding bands! You can book me right through my site jasonricciDOTcom . Most of Congratulations!
Jason, I've been melting-faces with the mix and repeats about 8 o'clock and time around 2 o'clock. I now have to read a warning before gigs. "Warning: If you want your butts blown out, stay in the room." I was just curious as to your approach. I just can't get into more repeats with the Two Timer.
Holy cats I was more just giving you a hard time n' shit cause were kinda bros...any way I run the two timer setting 1 (Short at Middle knob 9ish left 9 ish, the longer one middle same left the same right at on ish the DM-2 I rock at all three knobs around 10:00. Hope that helps a bit.You didn't have to go and remove your comment it was normal question I should have addressed in the vid.
There are people that claim and say regularly "that they don't give a fuck" most of them do...I truly don't give a fuck ,if I get my ass whooped the hospital is a vacation sit back and watch judge judy n' shit while people send me flowers and stuffed animals. That may sound negative but how many people can be stoked about a trip to the hospital, thats some positive ass shit.. My neighbors wear me the hell out and I never hate on them over it so I assume they let shit fly out of. Hey Thanks
Great video. Proves that you just can't have too many pedals. Overall I liked the BBE. I know you did a quick video on all your pedals but maybe you could also continue to do videos and concentrate on each individual pedal and it's settings, like this video. I am thinking about buying a garphic EQ and I think I saw one of those in your pedal chain. Also what order do you place your pedals in the chain? Sorry for all the questions.
I liked it! I even bought one. But then I went through a crazy gear purge phase where I got rid of pretty much everything. I have a Two-Timer now. Chris, you'd be proud. I got a whole pedal board going now! Wirless>AFB>Micro POG>Rotosim>Two-Timer>Verbzilla. I need an envelope filter.
You know I don't really use effects anymore.... all of those crazy sounds are either me or from me kicking the drummer in the head for being an idiot!
Nope, I havent the balls to try it. Is it somehow cleaned REAL well? I have seen it sold for hundreds of dollars per pound. Just the thought of consuming civet shit freaks me out. In any trace amounts. Funny how that works. I have eaten San Pedro and peyote and that was the worst fucking experience of my life. At least until the goods kicked in. Then smooth as buttaaah!!
this is a great video Jason. Are you running both delays in your board? As you know I run the DM2 and the Echo Park but the Echo Park is for digital delay effect on top of the DM2 that is always running. Is there merit to running two analogue delays?
Yeah I keep 'em both in there but I never really step on them both at the same...I have by accident and I don't think I liked it...It wasn't traumatizing or anything it just wasn't that effective.
You rock btw and an upsated gear vid from you would be rockin'
I'll do an updated video when I have time. I have some new pedals in there too... including a looper... it's fun as shit as long as you don't over do it with is pretty easy for me.
To me the Boss pedal sounds a bit wetter than the BBE and perhaps a tad more bassy - at the original settings.
As you played with settings I began to favour the BBE, the notes seemed to come through a little less mushy then the Boss. each note was more of a statement on the BBE. But still I can't decide which I like better. To me the Boss definitely sounded nicer at first. While not exactly the same, the BBE seems to be the Boss' equal.
Man come on mike ...Just mess with the thing for two seconds till it sounds good...My settings would be different with different pedals and a a different amp...unless you got the exact same ferrets as I do then you need to weasel your rhinocerous n shit.
"unless you got the exact same ferrets as I do then you need to weasel your rhinocerous n shit."
I may have to steal this quote. Another great video, Jason; with this and the last gear vid, I' m compiling a pretty formidable shopping list. Keep it groovetones!
the Boss doesn't change the initial sound, but the echoes are colored, on the BBE the initial sound is colored but as a more sharp and clear echoes....That's my opinion
So you can have the U2 Dotted Delay in Channel 1 and a solo delay in channel 2

DM-2 has much warmer sound. Much more natural tone.

When I was a kid, I could have used a 'delay' pedal to make the ice cream truck wait up for me while I sprinted down the sidewalk trying to catch up.

My First pedal review from a Bad-Ass Harp Player!
Damn J, You must have put A FEW guitarists out of business in your time! (that Joe Spires Harp...Daaaaammmn!)
The DM2 has a decay that is eerily beautiful...like little layers of sonic fidelity shedding per echo(I have a DM3 that I ADORE for that reason!)
the BBE is UNBEATABLE for the retail price AND the two settings( priceless for Live playing)!
DM2 if you can afford it (over $200!) / the BBE if you perform constantly.
that's my call!

I prefer the DM-2 as it does sound a little more organic to my ear.
Although if I hadn't got one in mint condition at a great price, I'd have bought the BBE Two Timer.
I think the BBE is a great pedal and very versatile. It's definitely not a poor second cousin to the DM-2 (like most analog delays!)

DM-2 sounds organic and is perfect for slower or less intense songs... doesn't have the sparkle or cutting power in the mix compared to the BBE.
I love how they sound together. I never thought much about the merits of using more than one delay on my signal chain before.
Damn you Jason. I want a DM-2! Now I gotta hunt for 2 sorta rare expensive things. Still looking for that Kopi Luak by the way... ;p
