Great video. I never thought about the flaps hinge point in relation to the CG. Spoilerons, are called "lift killers" by a former Navy test pilot on RCG forums, he's basically saying be very careful with them but he's also talking balsa planes, not foamys. So........ Also another forum member added that weight is also a huge factor. Jetset44 did actual design work on the F-22 Raptor, he really knows his stuff so try to get him to elaborate on the spoilerons more.
HI Dave, im trying to make my own home made airplane ,,but i need a list of material which would fit in the Extra300 ,,please can u make a video showing which material and electronic device are the best ,,
Hi there, I have watched several of your videos and I think they are great. I have a Parkzone T28 Trojan and I would like to use Ch.5 to add flaps. I have never done any sort of mods. Can you please put a video together that shows how this can be done? Thank you in advance.
My guess regarding spoilerons vs flaperons on bigger planes is that it directly affects level of a plane. Using flaps plane gains lift while still being very horizontal and can land like a passenger Boeing. For RC being horizontal is sometimes less important so they can benefit from everything spoilerons can provide.
Actually, if I remember correctly Boeing also have small surface areas which act as spoilerons/air-brakes, but they are way smaller in comparison with the flaps.
Dave, You do SUCH a good job. You are a great speaker. People love you. But... Get to the point!!! To much chatter! You have too much knowledge and too large an audience to "yuk it up" so much. Not hatin'. Just trying to be constructive.
hey i love all of your videos, but i thought that the reason flaps worked was because it created an undercambered wing like on a slowstick. it needs less air to go over it to create the same amount of lift. i also thought that the reason spoilerons worked on rc planes was because your prop wash goes over the wing at the same speed causing the same amount of lift as normal, but then the added drag slows down the total speed of the plane.
this would mean that the reason spoilerons aren't used on full sized planes is that there is no prop wash to go over the wing, because the air is brought in at the front and ejected in the back without passing over the wing.
Hey Dave, great video. Funny coincidence, I tried flapperons for the first time the other day on the extra300. It lifted so fast without pitching up, it even went backwards in the wind whilst climbing. Good fun.
I think you answered the question about "why no spoilerons on real jets" yourself: If the CoG of real jets is far away from the rudders in the wings and the computer is compensating you neither have an airbrake-effekt nor the plus of stability. Keep in mind spoilerons and elevons/elevators are very close to each other so they rather work "with each other" than "against each other". Just a guess, though.
The reason I got back into R/C air about a year ago after a 21 year absence was for aerial photography (AP). The first video camera I found for "filming" from a rocket or plane was one of those cameras from Grayson. They work great. These things record audio as well as video, and the sync is perfect. I highly recommend them.
This is all very very good information! soon, ill build a small park flier out of the sukhoi on grayson hobby's website, but what i don't quite understand is channels. say i get a 4ch radio, i would need 1 for the motor, 1 for the rudder, 1 for the elevators, and 1 for the ailerons correct? or am i all backwards?
Dave great job! I was a little worried that you would drift a bit on the subject but you kept the live show very focused. It is tough to do it all in one take, cover all your points and have continuity. Well done and keep up the good work.
Hey thanks alot Dave! This is just "prototype 1" so Im working hard to make all the next ones better and better as I figure it out. Thanks for all the support!
Its just what I think but they have a lot of power more than your electric so they can probably just power out of their conundrum of losing lift look and see on a pic of them doing high-alpha and see if their after burners are on.
anuther great video agian good job but i not trying to be mean but the video quality was not ass good as befor videos but that dont matter to me im always gana wach your video and my name is Dustin from tahoe
Interesting video, however most planes in flight pivot around the center of lift, not the center of gravity. The CG is usually slightly forward of the CL.
First of all, you make fantastic videos and you are true inspiration for many people out there. Excellent job on all accounts!! To critisise a little - the prior videos were more condensed and easier to follow. This one is not nearly as cohesive and is somewhat disorganized. Just keep the message staigt and clear, I do not think you need editing for that - you are great communicator and very smooth in getting the point across even when improvising.
Just a thought about the big jets not using spoilerons. My rationale was that because they are fly-by-wire (computer controlled) that the computer could figure out that the plane wasn't doing what the pilot wanted (with the oppposite aieleron control in high alpha) and then reverse its control input. Not sure if that is whats going on but it would make sense.
P.S. Love the videos. Been watching the beginer courses even though I'd like to think Im not. Keep the good work coming!
I just bought that little camera for on-board videos from my rockets. Its a pretty nice little camera but doesnt work very well in low light conditions. Here is the first and only rocket Ive used it in so far, check out my videos to see it, its called 3 stage water rocket I think. Comments would be appriciated.
I'm looking forward to seeing how it works for you! I really like your show!
Its going through our main camera and then routed to Ustream. We've been working on a different way to do it. More steps but it should have better video quality next time.
The wild card is we have to do all this WITHOUT having Ustream to much in the middle because Ustream always cuts out... so its all trying to work around that issue.
Hey thanks! We worked on the quality every day for 2 weeks and still couldn't get the bugs worked out in time. Next couple live shows we should have it dialed in!
everybody and their mother has one of those f-22s! like 3 people have reviewed it.. that must mean that i have to get one? hmm.. i do like the flag scheme, and it seems like a good candidate for an upgrade like a nice HET 6904 fan and 2w-25 motor or something..
Nice info! Suggestion thou, instead of uploading the recorded ustream vid, why dont u record with the camera u are using so when u upload, it will have better quality for youtube. But u will still be able to go live with the same camera.
Yes, we spend most everyday of the past 2 weeks trying to get the live video all to work. There are so many bugs in it, its ridiculous. Within a few more live shows the quality will be better.
Hey Dave, Val and Keith, Great video as always, in fact I think they are getting better. Your business model is old school which is catering to the customer; and you have fun while doing it. Some cooperations are trying to use You Tube to reach and educate their customers on their products, but they just don't seem to get it. Keep up the good work! Is that some gray above your temple? Nah, I didn't think so.
The info is all "RC based" from what we have done over the years. So its all proven to work like we say. Any questionable info is probably going to be by our wording. For the sake of time I can't use every detailed word that everyone is looking for. Just look at the big picture and it will all make sense.

flaperons are when Ron J gets a hold of your plane and modifies it...HAHA.. that was good!
qsecgtyhd 3 years ago
I think you missed the point about flaps.
Whether they are trailing or leading edge, flaps are lift enhancement devices, used for slow speed flying.
The only reason to use flaperons is to retain control at slow speed.
You dont use flaps to get more lift, but retain lift at lower speed.
Its all tied into Reynold's number.
You should get a copy of "model aircraft airodynamics" by Martin Simons.
Its a great book, it will give you a lot of background info.
