STOP the bullshit about some " god "... people.... children, women are murdered daily in war zones.... So stop the crap, the bull shit abput some " god " ... Just stop it.
There are too many assumptions involved in believing in the God-idea. It's such a load of crap. Having said that, as Viktor mentioned, I do agree there may be an unconscious 'longing' for something greater in athiests etc. However, it makes sense that this is an evolved part of our psyche which remains after all the time our species required such explanations in the face of zero knowledge of our world and the universe for so many hundreds of thousands of years. Be brave. Don't believe in stories
@nedgey Nedgey, thanks for your interest and comments. I wanted to respond because I think your ideas are out of whack. Sorry I'm rather slow.
I’d say that like the no God belief, there are assumptions involved in any candidate of believing. You can’t get out of bed without making assumptions. It’s nice to reduce these to a bare minimum but impossible to get rid of them all. Have you seriously questioned any of your own assumptions?
How about hasty assertions (light on substantiation I note) concerning “God-ideas” being, err, unthinking/ unthinkable/ unevolved/ farcical?
Funny you should mention stories because your evolutionary sketch resembles a just so variety. There's surprisingly little evidence (empirical evidence mind) in favour of the grander versions of Darwinian evolution. Even if the Darwinian synthesis were true, I don’t fully see its bearing on the existence or not of God.
Bravery likewise has not much to do with staring into the teeth of oblivion. It’s kind of you to tender support but reality gives not two hoots about my attitude towards it. Besides why is this a particularly courageous stance? I did it for years and it was easy. The good thing about oblivion is that you’ll not be around to worry about it. There’s comfort and freedom to this assumption. The bad thing is you won’t get to appreciate any relief. Also everything you cherish, care about, or love,
is heading into that same chasm. In fact why care about anything, least of all deluded believers and their mistaken apprehension of reality? It makes not one jot of difference. We’re all in the same boat with identical destination. Why fuss rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic?
While I’m at it the macro evolutionary story has other discomforting ramifications. On this account we have no freedom to choose our attitude towards anything. Our biochemistry chugs away generating brain states we
have no control over. So we can do away with quaint concepts like freedom and responsibility, praise or blame. We can also do away with rational thought - there’s absolutely no reason rationality should be in the mechanics - particles and matter are NOT rational. And lastly we can do away with ourselves. At best we are meat puppets with delusions of grandeur. Our illusory selves mere by-products of chemical reactions. The fact is we are insensible and no more free or rational than your average
So what. If that’s how it is that’s how it is. I think rather strongly it is not like that.
If I’m deluded how could I help it? If you really “hold” the “views” you propound, don’t make the “mistake” that you are free to respond to what I say.
There's no escaping this conclusion.
Steve
PS Hope I haven’t put a kibosh on your “creativity”.
It would be a shame because I like the guitar work.
@steveWakaUK There's greater chance for accuracy within the system which reduces assumptions the most: science. There is ample proof of evolution. We can still have free will with a mind evolved to respond to the world in certain ways. Interesting you think if atheist or agnostic there is no point in finding meaning in one's life and others'. We would disagree. Steve, I was just making conversation, no need to get personal. It is great that your beliefs help you provide meaning in your own life!
@nedgey Hi Nedgey, sorry that last bit came out pretty badly. I didn't intend it to sound as personal as that. I was trying to draw attention to some of the implications of a fully materailistic world view. Thanks very much for your interesting and sensible responses. I used to have similar views to your own. Will try and write more if I get the chance.
The guy in the gown says secularists are 'pretending.' He is trying to shove his religion down Dr. Frankl's throat and totally misses the point of logotherapy, which teaches that one can find meaning in many things such as love, work, a project, experiencing life. I have never heard Dr. Frankl say religious faith was essential to a meaningful life. If it is for this guy, all power too him. But it's not for people who, as Nietzsche said, choose to pursue truth, not comfort.
@ytdsgdjgfueyxn537 With respect I don't believe you heard Dr Frankel clearly. These are two great men of faith . The 'guy in the gown' is Dr Schuller of the Crystal Cathedral. I have always understood Dr Frankel to be a christian but he said here that for professional purposes he may not 'impose' his beliefs on his clients as opposed to Dr Schuller who's job is to preach the Gospel. So Dr Schuller is not shoving his religion down his throat. He is asking opinions of a man he greatly respects.
I am pleased that he has moved away from Frued's "that sex is the main drive in humanbeings and there is no such thing as free will." My how that pack of theories has caught on today. Thank you Universe for Frankl.
@atreya87 Thanks atreya, I think you might be able to purchase a copy from The Viktor Frankl Institute: viktorfrankl . org
There is also a new documentary about Viktor called "Viktor & I" available from: viktorandimovie . com

@iliketoeatbeef Thank you for your kind comment my friend. I studied a little philosophy, but I'm rather stupid so it takes much time........
