Most people don't know this but driving behind the bmw x5 is a toyota landcruiser...in case the x5 breaks down or it gets stuck...no differential lock, low range gear, height control, etc...haha
great recovery mate! Getting my F 650 GS Dakar this spring and yes, it's my first bike that I'm willing to make payments on. All others were under 2k and loved and sold. I can hardly wait. J Baber
This is not one of the cars used by the BMW tem X-Raid, now they are using X3, and the X5's they used some years ago are the ones without the facelift.
because the race is so dangeroud they put the blood type of the racer on a lot of his gear, saves time in the event of an emergency. They didint really say anything about charlie. he rode 400 odd KM with a broken hand on one side and a broken thumb on the other, hes hardcore!!!!!!!
tsk..tsk.. tsk.. do they still insist that an X5 is suited for an off-road track?? its been designed for those wannabe 4x4rally driver who dont want to get their hands dirty..
then why didn't you bought a 5series...and spend more money on a X5...don't get me wrong...i love to cruise in my SUV but if it's a SUV you have to use it like one...if you have a Lamborghini you wish to go on a track with it
You're assuming that a 5 series outperforms the X5. My favorite thing about the X5 is that it is very unassuming. Many think it's just another SUV, but it actually drives like a sports car (BMW calls it an SAV) and has the luxury of a 7. It will surprise you. For me, I also like the cargo room, cabin room, ride height, towing capacity. The downsides are that it is heavy and gets bad gas mileage. The X5 belongs on a track before it belongs in the dirt... that's what dirtbikes are for.
The ML performs well too. Before getting the X5 I test drove the X5, Acura MDX, Mercedes ML, and the Range Rover (HSE - not the sport). The Range Rover was crap, but the rest handled really well. 3 or 4 years ago the Acura and ML could not compete with the on road performance of the X5, but they made siginficant improvements (2007 and up for Acura, 2006 and up for ML) and perform much better now. When BMW went to the E70 in 2007 I think they took a small step backwards in performance.
You totaly misunderstood, i was being ironic. I drive a Range rover P38, and i love it. the other SUV´s are nice cars, but they aint nothing close to range rover when it comes to 4x4. a x5 is better of competing against a mondeo than a range rover
omg what is up with you brits and the x5, it wasn't designed to go off road, it is a crossover, but nevertheless, any british review i see of it, they call it an "off road car"
There are a lot of worse things that weren't designed to go offroad, that have. Yes they call it a "Off Road Car", Cause well shit this one was designed too...
That wouldn't keep with a properly riden bike. IF that was a proper moto x bike then the speed difference would be insane. I also do believe that it was a bike that tends to win the darker too. Its endurance machines and not fast racing machine.
Sorry but I know they use larger bikes for the Daker and not motox. There isn't many cars that can keep with properly riden bikes. Look up on youtube "speedway bike vs car".
The endurance is about stamina ,not which is quicker in a short race. I remember seeing on the news how a bike was the first to finish the dakar rally. The rider is the biggest issue in any race and on a bike they would have to be extremely fit.
the support X5 4x4 did not use the race course.. they drove it on normal road...
secondly, the Racing version of 4x4 in dakar rally is much much faster than bikes.. with full traction compare to bikes.. that's why bike riders have alert alarm system when the 4x4 are coming and overtaking them...
While that x5 is bad ass, in Race to Dakar, it was plagued with one mechanical issue after another. They don't go into it with this "race", but trust me... the x5 added its own bit of drama to the race. And definitely, pick up this dvd (Race to Dakar). You won't be disappointed.
There is no way that X5 would have kept up with the bike. I've raced Motocross and we fly across the rough. I also have a 4x4 and there's no way that could keep up. Setup.
It wouldn't surprise me if Whizbang is right, I think the 650 Dakar would have smoked the X5 despite some of the long open bits where Tiff got to really put the power down. It just wouldn't happen would it? lol. It wouldn't have been very entertaining if Pavey just dusted him off completely. The Scandinavian Flick was hilarious though, I thought Tiff had rolled it for sure (I think he did for a moment too!)
I love my X5's. Bar none the best in the rain. We have an E53 and A new E70. The E70 is great but I feel the brakes are overly assisted(too much boost). Maybe it's just me but I feel the E53 handles better. Maybe it's just properly broken in. Most cars dont reach fool potential till about 10K miles.
Nice, but surprised it didn't break down every 10 minutes like on the trip.

my X5 will never see dirt, but man that looks fun as hell.
mailbrown 3 years ago
why not? i love to go with my ML offroad....that's what SUV's are all about
sergiu9307 3 years ago 3
one reason, my street tires are $400 per tire. they would perform terribly in the dirt and I cant afford to keep 2 sets of tires :(

The Range rover is crap, because it´s the only car that is built to go offroad. it isn´t just a normal car on steroids.

shut up! you probably drive one of these x5 and you don't know what a range rover or any other land rover can do in off road! you are sooo ignorant!

actually no, most americans are not as enthusiastic about cars as i am, so it's not televised here.

if it wouldn't be a sport car the car would be faster.i'm sure that everyone as seen images of cars overtaking bikes on flat road flat out.

Dumbass they dont use moto x bike in Dakar rallies and a 450 moto x bike wouldnt stand a chance in the long run with a car, thats a 650
