If you have a form of Schizophrenia and you become deeply religious it can sometimes cause problems because religion can act as fuel to schizophrenic episodes or delusions. I'm not sure if being a "militant atheist" would have a similar effect but having serious convictions about things can sometimes become a powder keg for the schizophrenia.

Atheism, just like theism, is an unfalsifiable claim. They're both humans looking at the Cosmos and coming to conclusions based on their opinion of the patterns they see, and they're both unfalsifiable because they're both assumptions that can not be empirically inspected.

He definately didn't have a strong Christian faith, but during World War II he allowed the Church a revival as a patriotic organization and thousands of parishes were reactivated. Also the Russian Orthodox Church Synod's actually recognised the U.S.S.R. and of Stalin personally, which led to a schism in the Orthodox Church inside and outside Russia. To Stalin both Communism and Chrisitanity, like everything else, were tools he used to retain power.

@Tentfire - It sounds like this man may be a schizophrenic. If you have a form of Schizophrenia and you become deeply religious it can sometimes cause problems because religion can act as fuel to schizophrenic episodes or delusions. I'm not sure if being a "militant atheist" would have a similar effect but having serious convictions about things can sometimes become a powder keg for the schizophrenia.

He tends toward semi-logical but irrational or implausible delusions, seems to hear voices or mistake the behavior of others as conspiratorial, exhibits unusual speech patterns and strange, disjointed, wandering thoughts, etc.

how can any one who believes in the second coming of Christ think that any human being is able to prevent that and think that killing another human being (especially one's father) can promote his mission.
Besides that it seems like he was actually insane but now cured (being in detention not receiving proper care is then a miracle in itself) (perhaps Christ is real?!).
