I like the idea of homes becoming self-sustaining by producing all of their own electricity. But in order to get there, it's going to take much investment and innovation. That can only be done by governments, business, or coordinated non-profit investment.
@mos6507, Maybe we should change it to "peak debt" for many people and "peak wealth" for the elite? If we think of wealth as being based on real resources, then I agree with you. (Peak money-printing? Probably not).
Peak oil is basically here (as acknowledged by the International Energy Agency). Peak fresh water looks pretty close.

Love Paul and Sarah Edwards books, but this particular interview has me stumped. Only in that they don't want to think of the "Mad Max" scenerio. We as a society have thus far created something we can't sustain. We may need to be stripped down to the bare bones and start over to create the sustainable community shagri-lah they envision. I too hope for that kind of future, but for now am working on my survival skills. People won't change until they have to I'm afraid.
These career ideas are great for young people but hard to realize for many of us professionals, w lots of ed and debt with great lack of resilience due to our debt, who have been caught in the jobless "recovery" silliness. I appreciate their optimism and they have done a lot of their homework but I wonder, esp considering that we are now tipping over into the next phase of the collapse, how far behind the curve they are. @PhotoNika We don’t assume growth. We do foresee change and change provides opportunity for some and challenge for most. You’re right about lack of resilience when you’re shackled by debt.Bankruptcy needs to be re-reformed so that it can perform its historical service of enabling people to start over.We need to revive local economic activity because at this level hours programs can provide a way for people to exchange services and people with age and experience can trade it teaching lost skills.
@paulinpmc the debt issue shackles most of the middle class, especially us non-baby boomers that come after the boomers. I heard growth when you were talking about table top manufacturing. It makes me think of cottage industries making widgets for gadgets to be sold to people like we do today (iPhones, etc) a model that is anti-sustainable and dep of imported heavy/precious metals etc. Perhaps u meant something else!
I've been concerned about job security all of my adult life, mainly because I got out of highschool right in the recession of the early 80's. That's why I became a diesel mechanic. I used to brag that "we could have another great depression and I'd still have a job". Now I'm testing that boast. So far so good.
I switched to fixing transit buses back in 2007. I figured that as gas gets more expensive and people get less wealthy, then more people will ride the bus. Again, so far so good.
I like a lot of what these people are talking about but they totally left out security. In bad times people get desperate and these people don't look like they could do much if a couple gangstas kicked in their door and started looting their home. Even if the criminals somehow chose not to harm them, what could those people do? Perhaps Sarah could try to psychoanalyze them but I doubt it would help. Do they even own a gun? I don't have much hope for their future when things get seriously bad.
To prepare for an uncertain future you need to decrease your dependence on the systems of support on both a temporary and sustainable time line. If the grocery store shelves go empty, it's wise to have 6 month to a year of food in your basement for temporary survival, as well as stored seeds and an established garden for longer term survival. Having a backup power supply and a few solar panels is important as well. And having a firearm is critical as well or you can loose everything else.
Due to automation there will be a constant decrease in jobs and tougher business competition. An "Elm Street" economy isn't going to work. The only thing that we can do, is remove the monetary system entirely. Search for The Zeitgeist Movement and The Venus Project here on Youtube to learn about how automating tasks and replacing jobs with robots is a good thing and how we can make robotics and computers work for us instead of us fearing losing our jobs and not having a place to live or food.
@manilaenglish Sorry to tell you this my friend, but, Zeitgeist is all about an extreme communist, atheist and closed society future. Who will decide how the society functions and what privileges you will be granted? Not you. There are places that have already removed money/currency/medium of exchange from the equation. They are called prisons. Bank notes, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs or any form of commodity money is prohibited. Zeitgeist sounds to good to be true because it is.
@HowToChangeTheWorld I understand your point. I do. The EXACT same thought crossed my mind immediately as a knee jerk reaction when I heard that concept of not having any money at all and making everything free made possible by sharing the resources as a community. However, the flaw in that comparison is that prisons are an oppressed society with very few resources. The lack of resources is the reason those economies develop within prisons.
So Zeitgeist is very realistic if we share resources
@manilaenglish To me, money is anything that I can trade. Time is money. I may also choose to share my time with another. The definition of slavery is to be obligated to another without choice, and freedom is to be without obligation. Mediums of exchange allow free people to trade for the betterment of each other. However, externalities are rarely considered. Ask yourself why the sale of tobacco and alcohol is tightly controlled and taxed. They are forms of money and money equals freedom.
@HowToChangeTheWorld If we don't participate then we can't eat and we don't have a place to live. Even people who own their own land and grow their own food are not free from forced servitude because there is a tax on their land which must be paid year after year. If they chose not to participate in the economy or can't participate then they won't have money to pay the tax and their land will be taken from them. So you see Capitalism looks like freedom on the service but it's really slavery.
@manilaenglish I see where you are coming from. But, since the term capitalism is used so loosely, I try not to use it for that reason. I am not really a big fan of private ownership per se, as we can not take anything with us to the grave. Natives of these lands had a hard time understanding the concept of ownership. I do however believe that if there are renewable resources which are not being used, then anyone who wishes to use them to survive should not be hindered in any way.
@HowToChangeTheWorld Imagine you had a robot that had the ability to do anything you commanded completely unsupervised, did a better job than if you had done it, and didn't have emotions so it never complained? Such a robot doesn't exist but if it did, you wouldn't need to work. What you decided to do with your time would still be up to you. You could spend it singing, dancing, playing or could spend it studying, working on a community project or a hobby or whatever you wanted to do. (cont...)
@HowToChangeTheWorld Technologically our society is advancing at an astounding rate, however we are still moving forward far more slowly than we could be going simply because of the need for jobs to sustain our lives. Because of this need for jobs, people are stuck doing boring, repetitive tasks that make our society ignorant and unhappy. A great, great number of jobs being done now could be 100% eliminated immediately with today's technology. For instance, think of how useless cashiers are.
@HowToChangeTheWorld Animals other than humans do not have the technology we humans do. We have the intelligence and technology to create better lives for ourselves and for the planet.
@HowToChangeTheWorld Now you said that you like being able to have the choice of sharing your time with others. That is what everyone wants to be able to do and we will still be able to do that in a society without money. You said the definition of slavery is to be obligated to another without choice and freedom is to be without obligation. Well, capitalism obligates everyone to participate as I've already pointed out while in a post money world all work is voluntary.
@manilaenglish By looking around in nature it is clear to me that there are no free rides; everyone must work. Working is not only necessary to survive, but can be much fun as well, as long as you are able to realize the fruits of your labor. I would rather more people be engaged in permaculture then in post money society. If you can point out one flaw in the permaculture model, then I will consider the zeitgeist model some more. Thanks for sharing your views with me. I do appreciate it.
@HowToChangeTheWorld Correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't permaculture a way of farming? Zeitgeist is an organizational and social philosophy. That's kind of like comparing how to grow vegetables with the Robert's Rules of Order isn't it?
You said that everyone must work because there are no free rides. What kind of work do 5 year olds do? How about 3 year olds? How about 1 year olds? How about a 95 year old retired woman? What about someone without a job studying to be a brain surgeon at Harvard?
@HowToChangeTheWorld Nobody would force you to work and you would have no obligation to work. That is real freedom. Living without obligation.
While it's true those kind of robots don't exist (yet), our society already has advanced so much that we are already feeding billions of people with fewer and fewer workers in Agriculture and how many people does it take to manufacture medicine and products in a factory? Less and less. It actually isn't necessary for everyone to be working all the time.
@HowToChangeTheWorld If we get rid of the monetary system and manage the resources as a community then it will free people from obligation and give everyone a much better quality of life. People won't be working because they have to, they will be volunteering to work because they want to. Because we provide food, medical care, education, transportation, everything you can think of to everyone in our society for free then people can chose to become educated, become scientists, doctors, engineers
@manilaenglish I'm all for sharing. But, when sharing is not possible, trade usually is. I do like the Zeitgeist movies and have seen them a couple of times each. The world is full of a bunch of animals, with me being one, and I certainly don't have all the answers.
@HowToChangeTheWorld The only time when sharing is not possible is when resources are "claimed" and access to those resources are restricted. This creates a society which forces everyone into servitude. Some people have tried to argue that we have the option of moving into a forest away from society if we wish, but that is not true either for we are not "allowed" to build houses from the trees, smelt iron from the rocks nor are we allowed to dig for rocks. We have no choice but to participate
So you see Capitalism looks like freedom on the surface but it's really slavery. The only way to be truly free is to open the resources of the world to everyone.
It is more than simply saying we are living beyond our means. Let's face we have way to many people along for the "ride'. To many people have stopped working and have a "give me" mentality. These people need to grab an orr or get out of the boat, their free ride without contributing needs to stop now. Get off your couch and find something to do, and don't give the story "there's nothing out there'.. There is something out there it doesn't matter if you like it or not. do something and contribute
@stt60 You are wrong. Without a free education, how can you expect them to re-educate yourself so that they can "grab an oar"? The best way forward is to automate as many jobs as possible, provide free housing, food education, and health care including medicine for everyone. We can make robotics work for everyone and not just a few companies. Please research The Zeitgeist and The Zeitgeist Addendum on Youtube. Watch both movies. Also learn about The Venus Project.
@manilaenglish I'm not sure why you think these things are "free". By all means as a tax payer I can tell you they are not free. Where do you think the money comes from to pay for entitlements? Entitlement money does come from people who work and pay taxes after the Gvt. steals it from you. It doesn't matter if tax money comes from working tax payers or automation someone or something is generating money for the Gvt. It is not free.
@stt60 The problem is that the people are enslaved by the state to become mere farm animals (human resources) to be exploited by the banks, who are slave traders essentially. Nothing is free in this world, however, nature is surely abundant. I'm sure you are no fan of paying taxes which go to cover interest payments on currency that is needed and so there is always interest to pay on outstanding balances.
@HowToChangeTheWorld You understand that we are enslaved by the monetary system. Instead of accepting it as that's the way it is, we need to organize as a community and think of our own solutions to solve the needs and wants of our community as a community. If we quibble over own private little pieces of land and only grow food for ourselves or for trade, then we are holding ourselves back as a society and as an individual. However, if we all agree to move into apartments and open the land ...
@manilaenglish "Provide free housing, food, education, and healthcare including medicine for everyone" I'm not sure what I didn't read correctly. The bottom line is sure everyone wants something for nothing including all the above you mentioned but there is no redeeming value whatsoever in treating people like this, If a person is hungry then they should go out in the garden and work. The entitlement mentality needs to stop and people need to be held accountable for choices they make..
@stt60 People don't want something for nothing. Just try to understand. Why do people have hobbies? It's because they want to master what they learn. Why does open source exist? Because we all feel a need to contribute to society. It doesn't take many people to synthesize vast quantities of medicine in a factory and scientists would turn their research "job" into a hobby if they weren't enslaved by the monetary system. We don't need to concern ourselves with money. We only need the resources.
@VonLeachim Il'l take the job of being in charge, if the job is still open. A job is a job, right? Lol. I could make a good dictator. Nice channel you've started there. BTW, you'd be happy to hear that I not only 'know myself' but was just sitting bear foot in the clover patch with my dog being at one with nature.
How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone."—Coco Chanel
@VonLeachim We don't need head figures in charge to function well. In fact we are better off without them. We organize ourselves into groups that specialize in an area. For instance, one group could specialize in food production while another group specializes in construction. And there is no dictator nor president nor middle or upper management. We self organize. My suggestion is to use Social Networking Tools to do this, but feel free to suggest your own ideas on how we should organize.
This vid is so true! I still work far from where I live but I am seeing more and more small, local businesses in my home town. As a person who likes to buy local I am having more and more choices. People started these home businesses as a way to make extra money and now with the down turn in the economy these businesses are taking over as a main income. With more time to put into these businesses they grow. It's wonderful and something I am envious about (though I love my profession).
@woodswoman783 The money is made scarce to give it value, and that scarce money does not enter directly into the small town economy. It is given to large corporations who the land and resources needed for every town to function. The people can only trade among themselves for so long before all the money has been siphoned out by the necessity for obtaining the things you cannot obtain in your own community for the reason your community does not and cannot control all the resources it needs.
