  • @Angelchik79 AMEN!

  • that is an actual recording of his heartbeat

  • E X C E L L E N T !

  • WHAT A LOVELY SONG. I LISTEN TO THIS EVERY MORNING AND NEVER GET SICK OF IT!!!

  • Beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice. Love Stevie!!! :-)

  • A timeless Stevie ballad, with innovation (the sampling--including his own heartbeat--recalls "Overjoyed," and various selections from "Secret Life of Plants"), Doo Wop harmonies, great lyrics. It doesn't get any better than this. This would mix nicely with Michael Jackson's "(I Like) The Way You Love Me," one of Stevie's favorite MJ tunes.

  • Wow! It's like an old friend. Welcome home Stevie!

  • Puts me in a good mood! I wonder if anyone notices the background whispering?

  • @jawaraokang I hear the whispering in the back also the sound of a heart beating is he a genius or what? this song is so beautiful.

  • I'm singing this for my Baby Lou, where-ever she may be xx

  • Wow

  • Cher, I ..love.., you for always..

  • "So hypnotized was I from seeing all the magic in your eyes..."

  • If I ever dedicated a love song to someone this would be it.

  • Absolutely Fantastic!!!!!

  • everytime i hear this i feel like dancing through the moon light!

  • Ooooooh weeeeeee Stevie!!!

  • @Angelchik79 Right on. A wonderful, unadulterated talent that any and everyone can listen to and appreciate. Just a pure genius and a universal treasure. The person responsible for my love of music. He "opened my eyes" and showed me just how much he "saw" in mankind without the kind of vision most of us take for granted.

  • such a great song! i recently saw him in Austin Tx for the Austin City Limits music festival. Amazing! I think im gonna make a point to see him any chance that comes up.

  • Love the finger snaps and the melody is crazy good. I just picture old time groups singing accapella on the street. Amazing song. I wish the whole Characters album was like this. Lets face it besides "You will know" the other songs suck with outdated production.

  • @saysay44 Free, Dark N Lovely, My Eyes Don't Cry, to name a few are some of my favourites on 'Characters'. Some have a problem with the production, but not me. It makes his catalogue more interesting for me. The studio and recording equipment he was using at the time left a mark on the recordings, but if you strip everything away to just acoustic piano and voice the craftsmanship and beauty of the chord pregressions will stand out like the more heralded songs in his body of work.

  • Is this brilliant or what? Stevie Wonder is one of the best songwriters in the world. Just listen to some of his songs they are deep. Example the sound of heartbeats in this song. Wow you can't touch this

  • "music knows it is, and always will, be one of the things that life just won't quit."

I rest my case (with omission of hundreds of other examples ;-).

    Responding to I forget who......

  • @klarde I'm definitely feelin' you on that. What an age we have lived in & continue to live in - when a song can either make you feel so good, make us recall the most beautiful of memories & experiences or stir you to be at your creative & appreciative best. Mr. Wonder aptly named himself; I just can't imagine a life without his many gifts to us. Great post, jw23. Peace to you all, peoples

  • "you are my first breath, my first smile, my morning cup of tea"...wowww...that's love.

  • This is such a BEAUTIFUL WEDDING SONG! I think this is a sequel to "Ribbon in the sky". Such a masterpiece!

  • I can't believe I mistook the mask he holds for a candyfloss -_-

  • @hypercolin ya and if you look close, it's a mask of Stevie!

  • This album was great my faves was this song and you will know.

  • great song

  • Wonderful want it for a wedding song it is so beutiful.

  • This was my wedding song. <3

  • @IWantASnack OMG !!!! i want it to be mine to !!!! the words absolutely melt my heart and describe the love 4 the 1 im with !!! :)

  • Good for a Valentine's Day wedding

  • This song alone puts Stevie at a whole another level, that very few musicians liricyst or singers ever will get. This is the kind of stevie song that has not become one of his classics.Probably cause its featured in the wrong album and released in teh wrong time.should this been released in the 70s we would be listening to this in every station.OK its imposible to choose a Stevie favourite but this is in the top5 ballads. Its brilliant,I mean music lirycs productioad lead and back vocals

  • This song by Stevie emboddies all and everything that I feel about my Wife. It is a true love ballad, not just a song but a ballad. An absolute jam and classic. He is truely an rnb mozart.

  • My favorite song from Mr. Wonder.

  • Most underrated Stevie Wonder song, in my eyes.

  • @SavantOnASpinet you are so wright

  • @SavantOnASpinet I TOTALLY agree!!! I remember this song because the gentleman I dated at the time use to sing this to me...they NEVER played it on the radio at all :( the only reason why I remembered it was because of the hook and the ending...thank GOD for Google!!!

  • Classic, makes me so sad but happy at the same tie ,bless you Stevie Wonder

  • Every time I hear this song I just get chills. It is so smooth and the words say everything you want to hear from a man. Stevie is one of the best entertainers of all time

  • ALL TIME CLASIC FROM A TRUE LEGEND

  • Wedding Song....☺☺☺♫♪♫♪♫♪♥♥♥

  • I heard this song back in 87' I think I was about 4 years old then. And loved it ever since then. Knowing the hopless romantic in me I would love for this song to be played to me by the one I'll love; Maybe one day..or perhaps someday :)

  • The entire "Characters" album is off the chain, but I adore this song especially! Love you Stevie!

  • Simply a WONDERFUL song!

  • I was 8 years old when I got this LP shoved into my hands... and I never let it go! It's been 20 years now ;-) this is one of the songs that will keep on nailing it... with a morning cup of tea :)

  • The lyrics are just TOO DEEP for foolishness....not like this bubble gum B.S. that they have out now. Perfect for practicing making pretty babies (LOL). The perfect marriage proprosal. Thank God For Stevie!

  • I love this song so much its sooo beautiful!!!

  • One of my favorite...

  • Trying to pick a favorite Stevie Wonder song is pure insanity.......There's simply WAY TOO MUCH outstanding material to choose from. I did it anyway......you're listening to the grand prize winner! From the moment I bought Stevies' "Characters" album back in 1987 (on cassette, for my car system....how's THAT for age!), this song, "With Each Beat Of My Heart" absolutely blew me away like a tropical storm. 23 years later, I'm STILL caught up in the tailwinds! The song is flat-out beautiful.

  • @aliquippawill Who are you telling. I played my Characters tape so much it broke! And I was hearbroken!!! lol This was my favorite song on this project.

  • @aliquippa will This is just outstanding its like a dagger to my heart, we are both on the same page, words excape me when it comes to this song its just a feeling of pure continment....

  • Like the experimental spirit in certain Stevie tunes like this. Wish he'd do more.

  • nice post.

    love this song

  • I remember playing this song throughout all of 1988... a beautiful tune.

  • always been one of my favs..beautiful words..thanks!

  • for some reason Im really feeling this song today. Think Ima call my ex. Ok Im not feeling it that much.:)

  • LOVE THIS SONG. VERY UNIQUE. MASTER LYRICS.

  • dedicate this to my boo sunny

  • With Each Beat Of My Heart...Gut....Spirit...I Enjoy This Very COMPLETE Masterwork From The One AND Only Stevland Morris!!!

  • This song is amazing!!! wow Stevie Wonder is genius to use his heart beat and use all of his own vocals as background vocals...i loooove this song, and i love this other song of Stevie's called "Visions"...that Ginuwine sampled "I'll Do Anything, I'm Sorry" i love Ginuwine too...but i really love this song.

  • I've always loved this gorgeous song and had the album which was underrated in my opinion.

  • Best album! So deep and opposite to the time of it's release!

  • 1987 :)

  • I very under appreciated classic from The Genius.

  • I love this song. I heard it on Music Choice on Cablevision.

  • Great song from a great performer/genius!

  • When the love of my life finds me, I hope we march down the aisle to this song.... What a way to say it!

  • Real music is the art of sounds, fantastic!

  • he is such a gifted songwriter/musician and such a bad lyricist.....

this is one of my faves, along with Ribbon in the Sky.

  • @misanthrope8 What the heck! Bad lyricist?

  • After a period of time, I simply become tongue-tied & brain-weary in my attempts to come up with the proper superlatives to adequately describe the sheer GENIUS of Stevie Wonder.........and the level of admiration & respect that I have for the man. This song, "With Each Beat Of My Heart", is one of COUNTLESS moments of musical brilliance created by Stevie that most of the world might not be familiar with. The QUALITY of his songwriting goes beyond brilliant........It's absolutely unmatched!

  • @aliquippawill I agree with you 100%! I just commented on "Send One Your Love", and I said that Stevie has to be in the top 10 lyricist of all time.

  • It sounds like Take 6 in the background.

  • yeah it does. did you see him perform with take 6 on BET the other night?

  • I didnt see them. Hopefully it's on youtube soon.

  • yea. it was a kool performance. i expect somebody to put it on here soon too.

  • @swirlclown You're right it does sound like them, their harmonies are always on point quite like Stevie

  • Yes...it definitely sounds like Take 6...but can you belive that Stevie is doing all of the background vocals on this song? 24-Track recorders are awesome (in some cases...48 track) lol

  • @shydmples

Yeah, but if you listen closely, you can tell it's all Stevie. There's a unique warmth and vibrato that he has that is unmistakable. :)

  • @swirlclown It's Stevie. He can't do it live without others, however. :)

  • yey! thank you for posting!!! godbless you.

  • from the time i saw your face.. i knew kno other could erase.. my loving you with each beat of my heart

  • He actually uses his real heartbeat in this song...Pure Genius!!

  • "You are my first breath, my first smile and my morning cup of tea." Just exactly how I feel about my baby. Even after all these years.

  • I have searched for this song for 10 years now!!! I heard it one and only 1 time and instantly fell in love with it. The only words that I could remember were "you are my morning cup of tea." If I get married I will dance to this song. I can't believe I finally found it.

  • Also, Has anyone noticed that he says "From the time I SAW your face , I knew no other could erase" That's extremely sad since he's blind :<

  • i love this song , it made me cry first time i heard it .

  • Yes indeed, this is one of his best that did not get much air play. However, I wore it out x2 on cassette.

  • This song has a Marvin flair to it. He really admired his Motown colleague! Always loved this song. <3

  • Not to mention Marvin played drums on Little Stevie's early stuff

  • For real. :) They were tight until the end of Marvin's life.

  • @johnniewalker23

    never knew that...cool

  • @timmy841212 Must be that Doo Wop flavor :-) If we can get more of that kind of harmony in Hip Hop we're good

  • i got a harmonica on my 19th birthday because of stevie.. this song makes me want to whip it out and give it another whirl! i loooove this song

  • This sounds like a wedding or proposal song.

  • thats funny you made this comment, i was listening to this song earlier and i was thinking i want this to be my wedding song.

  • Once again, thanks for uploading this song. I haven't heard it since my childhood, and it's a breath of fresh air just to listen to it once more.

  • Of course this song blew my mind when it came out awesome... especially when I found out that the kick drum in the background is actually Stevie Wonders Heartbeat. He said that he thought it would bring authenticity to the song... WOW and what a job it really did!!!

  • Are you serious? That is effing awesome! I never knew that. I love this guy man. Lol. Simply a genius.

  • a little trick he admittedly learned from his buddy Michael Jackson (also on the album)....MJ famously beatboxes his under-tracks

  • @dretyler wow i loved this song before i read your comment now i love it even more......

  • tears.......this song is perfect. captures the mood of daydreaming murmurings of loved ones.

  • This song brings back so many memories of when life was so carefree!

  • my acapella vocal jazz group "spotlight" is doing this song!

  • Now that you say that CoventGardenSinger, that background does sound very Take6ish. You like how I just made up a word dont cha!!!

  • This ballad is so beautiful.

I remember when I first had this album I kept playing this track time and time again. Stevie's voice really cuts through with real quality. Plus the chord changes and the harmonies, absolutly amazing.

I played this song to a work friend and he thought the all the harmonies were done by Take 6 (which are a gospel acapella group) I told him no it was all Stevie, he was blown away.

    dave

  • Ive always loved this album. I used to play this to my babies when they went to bed. My daughter was about 6 then she new all the words to the whole album. Thanx for sharing Awesome

  • stevie's harmonica solo is just sick...period...go stevie

  • The solo on this one is excellent. It was one of the first ones that i learned how to play because the riffs are simple, but yet complex!

  • i agree!!!!

  • This is that one!! Thanks for posting!!!
