Ancient Rome was a thriving civilization that grew on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 8th century BC. Located along the Mediterranean Sea and centered on the city of Rome, it expanded to one of the largest empires in the ancient world.
In its centuries of existence, Roman civilization shifted from a monarchy to an aristocratic republic to an increasingly autocratic empire. It came to dominate Southern Europe, Western Europe, the Balkans, Asia Minor, North Africa and parts of Eastern Europe through conquest and assimilation. Rome was preponderant throughout the Mediterranean region, and was the sole superpower of Antiquity. Even today its influence survives.
Rome was undoubtedly the central power of Antiquity. The Romans are still remembered today, as Julius Caesar (a military and political genius, symbol of Roman power), Cicero (a master of oratory) and Horace (the greatest poet of the Latin language). Roman culture and history was also praised by great thinkers and philosophers like Machiavelli, Rousseau and Nietzsche.
A society highly developed in military and politics, Rome professionalized the military and created a system of government called res publica, the inspiration for most of our modern republics like the United States and France.
By the end of the Republic, Rome had conquered more than half of the then known world: its domain extending from the Atlantic to Judaea and from the mouth of the Rhine to North Africa.
In the Empire, Rome entered into its golden times by the hands of Augustus Caesar. Under Trajan, the Empire reached its territorial peak, but began showing signs of fatigue. The republican values started to fall in the imperial times, and civil wars became the common ritual for a new emperor's rise.
Plagued by internal instability and attacked by various migrating peoples, the western part of the empire broke up into independent kingdoms in the 5th century AD. This splintering is the landmark historians use to divide the ancient period from the medieval era and the "Dark Ages".
The Eastern Roman Empire survived this crisis and was governed from Constantinople after the division of the empire. It comprised Greece, the Balkans, Asia Minor, Syria and Egypt. Despite the later loss of Syria and Egypt to the Arab-Islamic Empire, the Eastern Roman Empire continued for another millennium, until its remains were finally annexed by the emerging Turkish Ottoman Empire. This eastern, Christian, medieval stage of the empire is usually called the Byzantine Empire by historians.

i heard that the Creative assembly is working on a game based on Alien franchise which really sucks to me because i have no care for Alien games i want a ROME II TOTAL WAR its the only total war game execpt Empire and Napoleon to have a sequel and it could benefit SO MUCH from it we could have naval battles which is something i really want to see COME ON CREATIVE ASSEMBLY BRING ON ROME 2 TOTAL WAR

Lol the Praetorians where created by Gaius Julis Caesar Octavius Augustus to protect the emperors of Rome. But history has shown us that they have killed more Roman emorerors then they have defended. :P
@VictumRoManius actually they were created in the early republic, to guard the Praetor of each legion. Mark Antony resurrected them and Octavius used them after he defeated Antony

I have to admit RTW has good graphics and your able to do alot more,but Praetorians to me actually feels like your in the game,it draws you so deep with its scenary,missions,actual story line,and the pride of a Roman.

although graphics don't mean everything. gameplay s also important. not sure how the gameplay is on this game, never played it, never even heared of it before.
its a decent game with a very good campaign mode that follows Julius caesars 's lifeline from wars in goul to defeat of pompei . its all about battle with almost no resource other than population of villages you control - which can be used to create units.
WOW! lol i just found this game on an old pile of mine. Such a good game i remember. One of the best RTS games and with very advanced concepts for the time it was released, which was 7 years ago.
the most powerfull formation was the macedonian phalanx... the pikemen were the most well trained soldiers!!! cohortes win her...just because their commanders where wrong...under the rule of alexander...nobody could phanxise her!!!!
The phalanx used spears , but the roman short sword was devastating agains the phalanx because that formation could not manouver , could not turn and the romans came on sides and cut the greeks to pieces .
actualy the greek army got 2 units the first was the phalanx and the second ypaspists. The ''idiot'' new commanders did not use them correctly... they was the power of phalanx not only the phalanx... but they put hypaspits into the uniot of phalanx and they could move to the sides... so it was very easy to a heavy unit like cohort to break into...but if hypastists were free to move COHORTS should not win the phalanx
But the phalanx had many flaws , it couldn't be very well used on difficult terrain , it was very fragile , i mean it could break down if it was formed with poor soldiers , it manouvered very hard , the soldiers would have to be unified in actions and movement , so it was probably used by veteran or profesional soldiers , also the general's tactics mattered more .
exactly my friend... alexander was the best man to command the phalanxes.... he used well even if the terrain was difficult!!! in these terrains he used more the hypastists... he was unbeatable !!!! if he fights with romans he should have crushed them!!!! dont forget that the romans used his strategical movies...not units but movies
Nothing compares to the romans . Usually a crushing defeat would break a normal nation/kingdom but to win against Rome you would need a war , lots of victories and luck . Look at Hannibal , he crushed the romans many times , 3 times he destroyed entire armies , yet the end of the war saw Rome victorious and Carthage wiped out of history . They were master soldiers , superior to anyone in all asptecs of warfare.

Not really dude.. Praetorians were the emperor's bodyguards, usually veterans of the legions allowed to continue service, but with a larger influence in politics :p. They rarely fought in wars either, so meh.

what are you talking about? are you dumb? this sounds like you ripped that off rome total war. the "peasants" made up the legions. and the "police" were the praetorian guard. there was no fucking town guard in rome, and all the other cities had real non-citizen soldiers.
in real life, urban cohort were like the police, higher in the ranks than town watch but they kept order, not like rome total war, they were the best infantry in the game. praetorians were actually better in real life, but they were actually just body guards. but they were very elite.

RTW - Great game, but almost as bad as the movie 300 in terms of historical inaccuracy. Download RTW-Europa Barbarorum for a true historical experience.

the praetorians i'm just getting into it & age of empires 2 i haven't played it. All i can say is RTW, Alexander & medevil 2 total war r blowing my mind :) they'r awesome.
to make more people you must have a village and a centurio,chef,or officier .This guy ru into the village and you must only click how guys you wanted.
Praetorians is one of the best strategy games for me. It is old but it has very good graphics, for that period at least. I remember that I would sit in front of my PC for hours playing it! Another game with Romans that I like is Rome Total War.
praetorians is a different and original game, all other games are a copy of clasics as warcraft or age of empires 2 (extract resources, build and fight) but this is a new concept, For example: You do not have pickers so we can concentrate on military tactics, and most novel: the ground affects the battle, a detail that is very realistic!.MIXO

Not really dude.. Praetorians were the emperor's bodyguards, usually veterans of the legions allowed to continue service, but with a larger influence in politics :p. They rarely fought in wars either, so meh.

what are you talking about? are you dumb? this sounds like you ripped that off rome total war. the "peasants" made up the legions. and the "police" were the praetorian guard. there was no fucking town guard in rome, and all the other cities had real non-citizen soldiers.

in real life, urban cohort were like the police, higher in the ranks than town watch but they kept order, not like rome total war, they were the best infantry in the game. praetorians were actually better in real life, but they were actually just body guards. but they were very elite.

Praetorians is one of the best strategy games for me. It is old but it has very good graphics, for that period at least. I remember that I would sit in front of my PC for hours playing it! Another game with Romans that I like is Rome Total War.

praetorians is a different and original game, all other games are a copy of clasics as warcraft or age of empires 2 (extract resources, build and fight) but this is a new concept, For example: You do not have pickers so we can concentrate on military tactics, and most novel: the ground affects the battle, a detail that is very realistic!.MIXO
