Caballe Insuperable!!
Now I remember why in the 70's I was so MAD about this voice! Bravo Kraus! Brava Caballe. I think Florez and Brownlee could learn a thing or two from this wonderful artist.
I first heard Kraus on Youtube two or more years ago - all arias of Bellini, Rossini and the like. He was one of the greatest. One testament to his choice of repertoire is the fact that I recently heard a post of him singing "Dies Bildnis ist Berzaubernd Schon" by Mozart. It was truly not written for him - disappointing performance - strained, unsure. Choose music that suits the instrument and it all works out. Step out of your zone, and it disappoints.
With most singers there is what you like and what you do not like in their repertoire. For me, with Kraus, there is what I like, and what I like more. The man just never dissapoints.
Truly, here's proof that God loves anything sung by this monumental talent--Alfredo Kraus. Otherwise I'd be listening to compromised tenors and I would find it difficult to go on. How silly of the 3 (Italian) tenors to refer to themselves as the "greatest." Only this glorious Verdi Tenor has received over a million curtain calls in Heaven,
So many tenors have sung this in an unlovely manner but given us a wonderful high note & is forgiven. Here AK gives the best of lovely singing & a thrilling top. BRAVO!!! RIP.
I have heard Pavarotti, Domingo, Bergonzi , and Gedda, live and I think Kraus is there with them on this aria. ALL truly great singers. Have you heard James Valenti's rendition of the Cherry duet from L' Amico Fritz? It is one of the finest pieces of singing I have heard in the last 30 years! His voice is rich and full, glorious and mezzo voice is remarkably beautiful and passionate. Compare it with the Pavarotti / Mirella Freni on You tube. I think most ears will agree with me.
The tempo here seems slower than I have heard elsewhere, but the time is nearly the same as Pav. But more like a dirge, with unwarranted foreboding.
I was at the debut of Cesar Antonio Suarez in this role with Sills SFO 1977. His high note cracked like a bleating screech. Sills head snapped back and her wig went askew.
Awful as it was, I'm grateful I heard a real spectacularly cracked note. The ones on YT don't compare!
Why so many knowledgeable people overlook the Giant that is Kraus beats me. His beautiful technique and knowledge of Opera and the Art of Singing must have been phenomenal. His sensitivity always commanded respect. One excellent Canadian opera singer--Joseph Shore--told me that he was one of the kindest individuals he'd ever met anywhere near an opera stage! That tells me plenty as I listen to his voice and the feelings and emotional balance Kraus displays for the listener's benefit.
After listening to this aria by other good and competent tenors and then playing Kraus' version of "A te o cara," you get the distinct impression that Kraus has so out-distanced almost all those previous good and competent tenors that you wonder how in hell could three of the good and competent tenors call themselves Great when they put on concertizings in the Parks of many important cities around the world. In my opinion the 3 Tenors will be forgotten and Kraus will stand alone at the top.
I agree with you that Kraus is teh best of all, though i think you shouldn't underestimate the three tenors. I think Pav will be definitely remembered for beign the best singing the heavier repertoire (Tosca, Turandot, La Bohème, Aida, etc.). Domingo was also very good singing this kind of opera. Carreras is definitely many steps below.
Bien, correcta ,nada sobresalinte.
Kraus gives all tenors a lesson on how this aria should be sung. This excerpt indicates why he owned the role for twenty years. I heard him in Puritani at the Chicago Civic and at the Dallas Opera. I've heard other tenors in this role, but none topped Kraus.
No pestaba mucha atención a la voz de Kraus, pero ahora que estoy volviendo a escuchar I Puritani, he descubierto su gran voz. Gran voz sin duda alguna
One of the most elegant tenors of the 20th century. It is pure delight to hear this music in the hands of someone who understands the tradition perfectly and is admirable equipped to execute it. The C sharp is brilliant and shining, as it should be. Beautiful!
I have to confess that I have not always been the greatest fan of Kraus ( a great singer but I prefer a darker , more dramamtic vocal colour) but he is AMAZING here! So much light and shade. Brilliant!!!

ARTURO
A te, o cara, amor talora
Mi guidò furtivo e in pianto;
Or mi guida a te d'accanto
