for those who want to hear the original version... here's a thought... put on the CD! My copy sounds the same EVERY time.... and then enjoy the unique performances available here as well!
This song always reminds me of Halloween 1970, when I was 6 years old and first riding a bicycle that year, that Halloween and hearing Van Morrison's voice belting out this song from car radios and home stereo systems while I rode my bike in my hometown of New Port Richey, FL.
One of the things I love about Van Morrison is the fact that he does change the way he does the songs live. He is a genius and always surrounds himself with the most amazing players. He knows every possible dynamic to make the songs live a breathe a lif of their own in every performance. Long Live Van !!!!!!!!! Thanks for the video. LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!
Van NEVER does the same version of any of his song. Get over it. Every version is one to be treasured. Shows what an amazing genius he is to be able to make the same song sound so different
why cant he just sing/play it like the cd for once instead if trying to over jazz the whole song? he doesn't need to prove anything, i wonder if just does cause he can, or whether he's an arse? no offence, big ups, much respect, just trying to find a live version to watch how they play the original.
@headroomjace1 Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It always drives me crazy to hear Van play live. I just wish he was a bit more faithful to the versions of his songs as he recorded them. I know, I know, he is playing live and he has the right to play and present his songs how he wants to, but when you fiddle and fart too much with known versions of songs, it kind of puts people off (well it does me, and I guess you as well). Anyway, it is Van, so I guess this version is okay.
@headroomjace1 I understand this frustration too, especially with less masterly artists, but you gotta consider that most of the album versions were pretty spontaneous recordings themselves. Van was known to communicate very little to the musicians before they tried to accompany him, I think he likes the effect of a little tension between singer and band. I will however suggest you watch the version of "Cyprus Avenue" from this same set and tell me that's not the best version of that song ever.
It seems like Van is having trouble keeping up with the band...

I didnt know I liked jazz when I was 13 but I did. Van Morrison is the best mumbling mutterer singing stammerer we've got.

@headroomjace1 I kind of know what you mean. But I think the simple answer is -- he's singing it like he hears it in his head at the time.
