Hi. I dont get one thing about this comparison. Why you compare brand new Land Rover with 10-15 years old Toyota? Or they still build these in Australia or smth? Because in Europe they dont sell this type Landcruiser (Landcruiser 70) since 97. The last models are from 96 and then a new model was made which looks completely different styling wise.
Why i ask this, is exactly because of this, i mean you arent comparing cars from same tme period.
@mustsilm These vehicle are both available new right now! And these are the two current models. As you probably know, this Toyota was first launched in 1985 and this model LR, , was first launched in 1984. Both had different engines and drive-trains. My view is that these two vehicles are bought by the same type of buyers - those who want expedition-suitable wagons. Hence the comparison.
@mickburke15 But I didn't. I picked the Land Cruiser as the best. I have owned both and enjoyed both, but I now drive Land Cruisers. See part-2 for the conclusion. (I made the video on 4xforum.com)
@1996BulletProof I don't agree. When travelling in the hot desert, the vents and the ventilation system is important. The off-road action is only the most important when off-road, and these vehicle, in general, spend most of their time on road.
to anwser marnus2612 with after market lockers like arb would make the t/c useless it works on gathering information from the speed of each wheel and uses the brakes on the faster wheel on the axel group to simulate that wheel haveing traction hence it its no longer the wheel with the least resistance so the other wheel drives if you fit a locker when its locked both wheels on that axel turn at the same speed. hence no need for t/c
@3xforum - Andrew I own a Toyota L/C 70 SW, the same as you had tested. I need
your expert advice. We will be touring the Namib shortly. What approach do you
recommend for the high dunes. Some friends reckon the charge/momentum method is the best. What would you do. Also please, do you recommend hr or lr for the dunes, with front and rear lockers on, and which gear? Please help, it would be really appreciated. Thank you.
Man you have some pretty nice videos, you can compare yours with top gear's :). Great comparison though, i own a Land Cruiser Prado but i'm thinking about buying a defender. The landy has a soul that no other 4x4 has i think. The car is a myth,a legend and it makes you wanna have an advanture. The new Defender x-tech will defenetly be a badass looking car!! I think maybe the main reason why landcruiser took over the 4x4 market is cause they are cheaper-the reliability is pretty much the same
I had a land cruiser and had nothing but bloody trouble with it, I guess I had the hit or miss thingy. I'm now a converted land rover man hence the name. I will say tho, that the cruiser is a capable vehicle, but it can't make you feel as special as what a land rover does, it's hard to explain if you ain't driven one. I guess people only shout about a bad vehicle if it's cost them out of their own pockets. Bad news travels faster than good, and where a better place to put it than the good old w
@marnus2612 Good question! I imagine the combination of the two would be fantastic!... the best of both worlds, cause the TC on this LR is really good, but not as good as lockers (in my view) in really tough terrain.
every one is forgetting how easy a landrover is to fix than the cruiser especially when your in the middle of knowwhere, and theres reasons why it looks the way it is practical landrover can go down narrow tracks and get places the cruiser cant, and lets not forget about fuel especially on overlander expeditions 4.7 compared to 2.5 lot less fuel comsumption lot less fuel to carry and also easier to clean the list can go on for ever
@maverick00754 I beg to differ. Having used both for extensive overland, this is not a valid point. The 1HZ Land Cruisers have no electronics, have a larger engine bay and easier to work on. I have never experienced the problem on narrow tracks you mention. Since the TD5, LRs have electronics, which cannot be fixed at all. The 1HZ Cruisers have NONE. Fuel cons of the Rovers, excluding the TDi models, is no better than the 1HZ cruisers. The space for extra fuel tanks in cruisers is much larger.
@4xforum hi i was refering to the tdi model as the td5 is a servicing nightmare, and my points are valid as i used both vechicles in the british army in bosnia, you say the cruiser has no electrics i beg to differ they have more electrics than the 110 tdi model, but i do agree about the td5 version, the perfect 4x4 offroader has to be simple and easy to fix with limited tools and time, while using both these vechicles for 6 months the cruiser allways had to be fixed back at base.
@maverick00754 We must be taking about different models. This 1HZ LC has NO electronics, I assure you. I have owned two and know it very well - this being the vehicle on test here. What you say about the LC being more difficult to repair is interesting. I used Defenders for 8 years and now Land Cruisers for about 20, doing many film shoots and expeditions in Africa. I find the Cruisers generally more reliable - in fact I cannot remember a time when I needed to do a major LC fix in the bush.
@DefenderRocks read it again. It says electronics, not electrics. All Land Rovers are fitted with ECUs (Electronic Control Unit) that via a computer controls the engine operations. If it fails, the engine cannot run. It is fitted to over 95% of all vehicle engines worldwide and is necessary for emission control. It is also used as a very effective diagnostic tool. It has some drawbacks, not so much for the street car but for an over-lander it is undesirable because it is impossible to repair.
@DefenderRocks Only a limited number of Toyota Land Cruisers are built without ECU's and this (the 1HZ engine) is the last of them. It cannot be sold in Europe, Australia and the US because it does not conform to emission regulations. No doubt it will soon be phased out. It's a bit like the old TDi 300 Land Rover motor: reliable, tough, frugal and simple, and as so many LR fans felt when the Tdi300 engine was replaced by the TD5 engine, when its demise comes, it will be missed.
@4xforum and as for small the tracks in bosnia were to small for the cruiser so we had to use the landy the one time we used the cruiser it got stuck, also if you take the wheel of the back and say put it on the bonnet the rear door will open all the way and this point is not valid as the cruisers door doesnt open all the way because of the spare wheel i am not saying the cruiser is bad by no means it is exellent for overland expeditions but for true offroad landy allways for me
I like your comment/highlight on the driver seat being built too close to the door & the back door lacking the opening angle to allow loading of wide items. These are a valid comment, LR pls take note. A good 4x4 must not only handles well but must also be practical otherwise we might as well get a horse.....LOL
@nwl213 I agree... It has 1940's styling, character and appeal... and ride, and safety, and handling and ergonomics. The only reason I can see that anyone would buy a Defender is its terrific retro appeal. I think LR has a real problem: To build an all new Defender that keeps its looks and off road performance while improving all those things that it lacks, is going to be an almost impossible task. As soon as they modernize it, surely its character will be lost too.
@4xforum Thanks for your reply/comment, i do believe the real issue is not so much if Defender wants to keep the character but more towards the cost of making the changes. As we know already Defender is an icon in the 4x4 world but in terms of sales & profitability it remains a tough challenge for the company to invest further on this model.
The wish list to add for Defender is more towards the interior ergonomic and refinements rather than a total makeover.
@nwl213 Yes, but how does one improve the ergonomics, safety, handling and interior ergonomics without making radical changes to the largely riveted, single-skin body? I don't think they sell more than 100 000 Defenders a year, which is today's benchmark for economic vehicle production.. so your thoughts on costs are valid.
7:10: This issue can be easily solve. On my ´86 TLC BJ70 i just installed Land Rover Freelander seats, they are great, jaja!. btw, gread video, I´ve enjoy it a lot! regards!
@MrGigabytez Unfortunately we only get this Cruiser with the 1HZ. It's a pity because there are much better engines available, but Toyota gets rid of some of its older, non-emission-complient engines on us in Africa.
Well obviously, if he preferred the defender he wouldn't have bought his Toyota. This isn't really a fair review, since the toyota is his own vehicle and he has had time to get used to it.
Hi. I owned a Defender for 8 years and got very used to it. This, I believe, qualified me to do a fair test, and this is what I really tried to do. If you go back through the comments here, you will see as many Toyota fans believed I was biased toward the Land Rover as there were Land Rover fans seeing me as biased toward the Toyota. This is proof that the test was fair... as fair as anyone could make it.
Hey dingleberry - the Land Rover competes best with the Toyota 4Runner - and the Land Rover loses every time, lol. Otherwise it's Range Rover v Toyota Land Cruiser.
@v6cabby Because here in South Africa, this vehicle is new, although the shape was released elsewhere in 1985.. not unlike the Defender. The two vehicles are used for identical purposes over here, i.e. expeditions, so we felt that the comparison was obvious. The Land Rover is an old chassis with new engine. the Toyota is an old chassis and body (slight redesign of the front end) with an old engine, because it's new engine (V8-D) is only sold here in the Cruiser 200 wagon.
@4xforum thanks for that .do you not have the 80 series over there? we went to moroco in an 80 series a few years ago have a look if you wont westcoast4x4 its on here
Men, in all honesty, you guys do a very thorough comparison of vehicles compared to the automotive guys here in US. I wish our guys here would give us such a thorough practical description rather than 1/4mile results all the time. Excellent job!
@cunt3d Maybe because we don't have 6-million Pounds Sterling per episode budgets to produce it...like TGear... but rather we are a small production house with zero budgets doing our best. Best wishes... 4xforum.com
Fact:The 2 best 'offroaders'[in their own unique way] start with the letter 'L' and end with the letter'R', Land Cruiser and Land Rover .This should be taught in school.
@MoveOnDotOrgg I agree, some Land Cruisers are, but not this one! It's a hard-ride true off roader with no electronics, vinyl seats, manual gearbox, diif locks and as rugged as they can make them.
Land rover are infact king of 4x4 vehicles, they r indeed a legend but nolegend lasts for ever and i must say that toyota has developed some excelent choices such as this land cruiser.
one knows is not true). Also, it`s a matter of loyalty and pride, rather than admitting to horrific reliability problems, or applying good common sense. My SADF LR broke so many sideshafts that I panicked when one lasted 6 months. All my friends have experienced electrical, gearbox, drivetrain or engine problems. LR defender drive
I'd rather have the more reliable and dependable one...
Not the one that made Lucas the Prince of Darkness. Or the one with weak non hypoid and spiral bevel axles... And no Buick engines that love to slip liners...
I'm pretty sure if one day automakers decide to take out luxury such as AC,stereo system and cruise control with ride comfort their 4x4 vehicles will not sell well at all. It's how much consumers' expectation has changed over the years.
why would you want a 4.5 v8 landcruiser they have no injector pump its electronic injection and the front was widened to fit the v8 so you have to buy aftermarket rear spacers to have wheels tracking inline front and rear. beuatiful engine though pity its really not a submarine. i see about 10 every day, all utes
Trust me, you are one of the fews who gotten a missed with these vehicles. There are many other drivers/owners who gotten a hit with the bad stuff like fuel pumps and engine/transmission problems. It's either a hit or miss. But mostly hits.
If anyone is really interested in the pros and cons of LR ownership you should ask an owner or visit a LR forum. I have a series 1 (1949) and a series 3 (1976) and my experience has been quite different that what you have described.
Like I said you are one of the few who has experienced no problems with your LR but according to consumer's review the LR is rated worst than most cars for reliability by owners and drivers.I'm talking about problems with the vehicle that will leave you stranded. During my research I found out that it's now Toyota and Mercedes-Benz that's roaming most parts of Africa now where it used to be LR. What happened? Mercedes-benz and Toyota are rated better reliability than LR.
As i said earlier if you want to get a true indication of the reliability of LRs go to LR forums such as AULRO. JD power survey is not nearly as informative as info gained from long term owners. Im sure if you do your research you will find that the great majority of LR owners are very happy with their vehicles.
I'm sure that in the LR forums the owners are very dedicated to LR vehicles and love it very much. It's just that one of my college professor who travels a lot said that the last time he was in Africa(don't remember which part of) in 2007 that he mostly saw Toyota and Mercedes-Benz. There wasn't much LR like there were in the early 70's and 80's. Just wondering why? Thanks for the AULRO info, will check it.
I just dont understand about all the reliability problems with land rover?
I have a 200tdi defender with 225000 miles under it belt and I have had it for 10 yrs and never let me down.
We have a 2001 td5 disco with only a relay problem in the 8yrs of ownership and also a hi-cap td5 for work with 145000 on the clock with no problem yet apart from dual mass flywheel, it is used for heavy towing!
The only parts I have ever fitted is wearing parts like brakes, tires.
It's true like 4xforum said.Comfort, road holding and safety do matter to most drivers out there. These vehicles are driven on open roads to get to your off-road destination. I would choose the Landcruiser over a Defender anyday because of the reliability issues with the Land Rovers.Sure, they may perform a little better but the real question is will it leave me stranded? And sure the Defender made it up the steep hill climb the first try but it's not like the Landcruiser didn't make it at all.
These vehicles are driven on tar roads to get to the places they are driven off road. Road holding, comfort and safety DO matter to 99% of those who drive them. And I said, in some conditions, the LR is better, but lock the Cruisers lockers, and there is nothing in it. From, then, it is up to the drivers to make them perform better.
Land Rovers do rust... it's just that they bodies don't, but the chassis, especially around the spring hangers and the steel firewall rust just like any other vehicle. That said, their rust protection chassis coatings are better than Toyota's. 4xforum
I really like both the Land Rovers and Toyota Landcruisers but it's the reliability of the Defender that pushes me towards the Landcruiser. My research says Land Rovers are rated worst than most cars for reliability by their owners and drivers.Sure both cars probably have their fair share of problems but the Land Rovers are probably the most problamatic, engine wise.
landcruiser all the way iv got 2 amazon one on a 52 plate the other a m plate. excellent 4x4 never break and could pull a house down there that powerfull. iv also got a landcruiser hj60 which is better than a tank and has more power than superman on steroids. hadnt run in 18month i put new batteries in a jerry can full of diesel it started first tym
i have a 07 toyota land cruiser and it pulled a defender across a beach while in normal road gear and the defender was in low box. they were tied together at the tow hitch. in oz they say'if tou want to visit the outback take a landrover,if you want to come home, bring a landcruiser
Impressive, anecdotal evidence. Do you seriously think that the "in oz they say" wasnt thought up by Toyota's marketing dept? Exploration of the Australian interior begun well before Toyos were even introduced, hmm I wonder how? Toyo must love this kind of thoughtless consumer obedience...
ii agre if u want to go to the end of the world but a landrover if u want to go there and back buy a toyota.. best jeep about .. no doubt .. they piss on a ladrover
Chrome and gadjets will not get you home. Cummins or GM LS Go-power, Dynatrac, Dana60 F & R live axles with Detroit locker in back ARB in front, Sway bar disconect, 4L80e auto or NV manual, LoMax Np205 T/C and gear vendor. custom drive shafts and joints and any modern mid size SUV body and amenities with american electricals and apointments, OK in some areas of the worls I may need to bring some spares, not readily avalible parts but they will be few.. Now lets include some real 4x4 driving
The front vents were designed to provide positive air pressure in the vehicle, thus keeping the dust out. They are not for the wind in the face experience!
I owned one such defender with vents for 8 years - and if this is the case they didn't work - they were useless at their intended job. I always thought the fan did the pressurization job. That worked - a bit. 4xforum
What vehicles do you find in the most remote corners of Africa, a LR?? maybe ina junk yard, because people over there drive Land Cruisers, humanitarian ONG in the most hostile enviroments of the world, what do they drive? Land Cruisers. In any situation where a broken down vehicle means certain death, people will always choose Land Cruisers, they are the most dependable vehicle you can buy, period. Now, Defenders are a fine 4x4 and I wouldn't mind owning one, but only if I also have a LC
I've heard the Defender is uncomfortable because it compromised to be able to do what other 4x4 can't :). If you take a look at the Discovery model or the Range Rover model. Those models are more comparable to the Land Cruiser because it doesn't compromise so much in the comfort department. The Defender is a tool, a purpose built 4x4 that doesn't compromise but it's maybe the best there is. I've seen in a video that 74% of all Defenders are still in circulation.
Can't disagree on that one, I know that there are still alot Defenders are driving on the roads...
But don't forget that Toyota is an allround branche (I dunno how it's called in english) Toyota produces Corollas, Yaris', Aygo's, Celica's, Supra's etc etc < all normal cars... And then also producing one of the best 4x4's in the world... That's not nothing man....
U can't compare Discovery + Range Rovers with Land Cruisers, they are not specialy made for off-road abilities...
Don't be fooled by the fact that both the Range Rover and the Discovery look like city SUV's nowadays. They are filled with offroad engineering. Computers that choose best settings for each type of terrain, etc.
Anyway, you're right about Toyota, I prefer Toyota as a brand 1000 times to Land Rover in quality and reliability. If I want a comfortable car to last all my life, that car would be a Toyota. And I'm not surprised if the Land Cruiser comes second to the Defender in offroad,
True true... But the new LandCruisers are also looking as City SUV's ... If i say a Landcruiser, I really mean a 70, 80 and maybe a 90 serie (the older ones).
Didn't know that. I have been watching videos from the old models and it's better than I thought before. The thing is it's a low profile car as no one speaks about it. While loads of people talk about the Defender I practically didn't knew about the LC (it's special offroad abilities) until recently :)
Also if I was to choose a 4x4 as my only car. That would be a Land Cruiser, not a Defender, because the Defender is mostly for offroad use, and I would only do like 20% offroad and 80% onroad, like most people that offroad.
Lets hope they are more comfortable than they were. Even my 1985 BJ70 has air ride seats. Like I said I've owned nine and used to bleed green. It was hard for me to admit but the toyota products are much better and way more dependable. I still love the look of my old 110 but didn't like replacing two transmissions and having a broken back from the garbage seats. I've seen the light and its toyota for me from now on.
I've owned nine land rovers the last of which was a defender 110. I now own a BJ70 and FJ80 land cruiser with factory lockers. I'll never own another land rover again. You want to go in the bush, take the defender. Want to get back with out breaking another garbage transmission take the Toyota. I'll take dependability in the bush over the fairy tale of land rover. My 80 is exponentially more comfortable and and much more capable than my defender ever was.
My Land Rovers all let be down in the bush. I broke half shafts on all my series trucks. I have broken every garbage transmission Land Rover ever built Series, LT77, R380 ... all crap. The did use the bomb proof 727 Chrysler unit in the old range rover and now use the salisbury (dana 60) for a differential. The engines and transfer cases never gave me any problems. Then again neither has my 400,000 Km BJ70 land cruiser. Won't find many rovers with those Km's.
I did 2 extensive trips to the Sahara with a Nissan Patrol Y60 with served me well, but when I had the choice, I'd go for the Landcruiser. The Landrover really is a beautiful car and may be superiour in some extreme offroad situations as seen here, but at the end of the day it's reliability that matters more. Down there NOONE drives Landrover, it's Landcruiser country for good reason. Also I favour a car that's dustproof.
some guy i knew did some peace thing in africa and vehicle of choice were toyotas. mor specifically thee hilux. and the back it read "Land Rover Recovery Vehicle" i shit bricks wen i saw that. im proud to be toyota
What do you define as "Line"? the Willys is no longer manufactured and neither is the series I. The 110 or 90 of today is no the same as the series III or the series II, I'm not even going to mention the series I. The current model of Defender came out in 83, the 70 series in 85, so being two years older really doesn't mean anything
man the first camel trophy used "jeeps" "cj5"... now the others 18 years used a land rovers, is a bad car? NO!
which was a car used in trans-darien in panama? the first car???? A LAND ROVER series II !!! the siberia, borneo, sumatra, tierra del fuego, mundo maya, amazon, madagascar ? LAND ROVER!!!
I would take a jeep CJ over a series land rover any day. Rover finally has a decent differential and its a dana 60. Jeeps had Dana's decades ago. The CJ was the last decent Jeep prior to the Rubicon. I would take a defender over a YJ or TJ but a willis jeep or CJ is way tougher than a series land rover. You will see the light when you hear that expensive SNAP and your stranded in the middle of no where. That is if you defender leaves the pavement.
I know. Listen again! The bulge on the bonnet on the LC is for the V8 engine - which this one does not have. I have 30 years and have written 13 books on 4x4s. I do have some experience - and owned a Defender for 8 years.
What an idiot. The bonnet bulge on the Defender is due to the hight of the engine. When will they get people that know what they're talking about on these programs
60 years and they still haven't got the seating right in the landy defender, it is unbelievable . I can't close the door unless my arm is hanging out the window. 60 years! Note to Landrover - move the seat in or widen the cab by a few inches. Oh your axing the model, wonder why???
Defender is the undisputed king of off road adventure. Land Cruiser is a bit too comfortable and good for ladies or Americans. Defender will never let you down and actually has a good fuel consumption compared to the Land cruiser.
So most people in the world agree, Land Cruiser is the best 4X4 ever, accept if you are British who'll never admit Japaneas rule when it comes to 4X4.Love land Cruiser.
I think there both great, never understand why everyone bitches about which of the true 4x4's are best.
Especially when the public stigma against 4x4's means they get stuck in the same useless "SUV" category as an X5 and CRV.
When you get to this level of 4x4, it's down to what you need to do the job.
I've got a 90 at the moment, but I'd be an idiot to think it was better than the patrol or cruiser. End of the day solid axles, strong chassis, big tyres and simplicity are what it's about.
los dos son buenos rusticos y camionetas q estan hechas para el trabajo duro.. pero toyota es lo mejor que hay son indestruptibles y duran toda la vida toyota es toyota lo mejor que hay......
dont land cruisers have plastic timing covers that are only held on by clips? surely this will become packed with mud and snap the timing belt in deep mud?
I'd have the land cruiser as i worked as a mechanic for a Toyota main dealer's. Owned a couple of land Rover's thou, Why is it when you watch the news for example out in the third world countries or the out back in Australia where the smelly stuff hit's the fan do you only ever see jap 4x4's and then their all mainly cruiser's ? bacause their ultra reliable !!
do they still use Lucas wiring in that defender? That's a recipe for disaster there that Defender will leave you stranded in the dark in the dessert because just like the nickname Lucas wiring is *the prince of darkness* it sucks
so your saying if you own a land rover you can only drive it during the day? get back home before dark or that lucas wiring will haunt you in darkness
Nether one can be found in Canada for a reasonable price...Not to mention NO spare parts.
Boo hoo :,(

@Chroma2021 - Using vulgarity on this thread is uncalled for, Andrew is going to
take you off, thats for sure. Toyota "copies everything" is a very wide, inaccurate and
utterly ridiculous remark. Get your facts straight and think before you post rude
remarks on 4xforum`s (Andrew St Pierre White) thread.

every one is forgetting how easy a landrover is to fix than the cruiser especially when your in the middle of knowwhere, and theres reasons why it looks the way it is practical landrover can go down narrow tracks and get places the cruiser cant, and lets not forget about fuel especially on overlander expeditions 4.7 compared to 2.5 lot less fuel comsumption lot less fuel to carry and also easier to clean the list can go on for ever
maverick00754 1 year ago 2
@maverick00754 I beg to differ. Having used both for extensive overland, this is not a valid point. The 1HZ Land Cruisers have no electronics, have a larger engine bay and easier to work on. I have never experienced the problem on narrow tracks you mention. Since the TD5, LRs have electronics, which cannot be fixed at all. The 1HZ Cruisers have NONE. Fuel cons of the Rovers, excluding the TDi models, is no better than the 1HZ cruisers. The space for extra fuel tanks in cruisers is much larger.
4xforum 1 year ago
@4xforum hi i was refering to the tdi model as the td5 is a servicing nightmare, and my points are valid as i used both vechicles in the british army in bosnia, you say the cruiser has no electrics i beg to differ they have more electrics than the 110 tdi model, but i do agree about the td5 version, the perfect 4x4 offroader has to be simple and easy to fix with limited tools and time, while using both these vechicles for 6 months the cruiser allways had to be fixed back at base.
maverick00754 1 year ago 2
@maverick00754 We must be taking about different models. This 1HZ LC has NO electronics, I assure you. I have owned two and know it very well - this being the vehicle on test here. What you say about the LC being more difficult to repair is interesting. I used Defenders for 8 years and now Land Cruisers for about 20, doing many film shoots and expeditions in Africa. I find the Cruisers generally more reliable - in fact I cannot remember a time when I needed to do a major LC fix in the bush.
4xforum 1 year ago
@4xforum No electrics? Then why the hell does it have a battery?
DefenderRocks 10 months ago
@DefenderRocks read it again. It says electronics, not electrics. All Land Rovers are fitted with ECUs (Electronic Control Unit) that via a computer controls the engine operations. If it fails, the engine cannot run. It is fitted to over 95% of all vehicle engines worldwide and is necessary for emission control. It is also used as a very effective diagnostic tool. It has some drawbacks, not so much for the street car but for an over-lander it is undesirable because it is impossible to repair.
4xforum 10 months ago
@DefenderRocks Only a limited number of Toyota Land Cruisers are built without ECU's and this (the 1HZ engine) is the last of them. It cannot be sold in Europe, Australia and the US because it does not conform to emission regulations. No doubt it will soon be phased out. It's a bit like the old TDi 300 Land Rover motor: reliable, tough, frugal and simple, and as so many LR fans felt when the Tdi300 engine was replaced by the TD5 engine, when its demise comes, it will be missed.
4xforum 10 months ago
@4xforum and as for small the tracks in bosnia were to small for the cruiser so we had to use the landy the one time we used the cruiser it got stuck, also if you take the wheel of the back and say put it on the bonnet the rear door will open all the way and this point is not valid as the cruisers door doesnt open all the way because of the spare wheel i am not saying the cruiser is bad by no means it is exellent for overland expeditions but for true offroad landy allways for me
maverick00754 1 year ago
@maverick00754 and theres a reason why it is so bland and simple with no carpets in a landrover.
maverick00754 1 year ago
I like your comment/highlight on the driver seat being built too close to the door & the back door lacking the opening angle to allow loading of wide items. These are a valid comment, LR pls take note. A good 4x4 must not only handles well but must also be practical otherwise we might as well get a horse.....LOL

LR Defender is an ergonomic nightmare
nwl213 1 year ago
@nwl213 I agree... It has 1940's styling, character and appeal... and ride, and safety, and handling and ergonomics. The only reason I can see that anyone would buy a Defender is its terrific retro appeal. I think LR has a real problem: To build an all new Defender that keeps its looks and off road performance while improving all those things that it lacks, is going to be an almost impossible task. As soon as they modernize it, surely its character will be lost too.
4xforum 1 year ago
@4xforum Thanks for your reply/comment, i do believe the real issue is not so much if Defender wants to keep the character but more towards the cost of making the changes. As we know already Defender is an icon in the 4x4 world but in terms of sales & profitability it remains a tough challenge for the company to invest further on this model.
The wish list to add for Defender is more towards the interior ergonomic and refinements rather than a total makeover.
nwl213 1 year ago
@nwl213 Yes, but how does one improve the ergonomics, safety, handling and interior ergonomics without making radical changes to the largely riveted, single-skin body? I don't think they sell more than 100 000 Defenders a year, which is today's benchmark for economic vehicle production.. so your thoughts on costs are valid.

LR is not a bad 4x4 at all. The reliability

On the other hand, used Land Cruisers are like hens teeth - just not available anywhere.

All the noise made by LR owners is under
standable. They have to defend (haha) the
defender`s claim of 4 x 4 x far (which every
one knows is not true). LR defender drive
feels like a 7 ton tipper truck.

why would you want a 4.5 v8 landcruiser they have no injector pump its electronic injection and the front was widened to fit the v8 so you have to buy aftermarket rear spacers to have wheels tracking inline front and rear. beuatiful engine though pity its really not a submarine. i see about 10 every day, all utes
johnaust7 2 years ago
Trust me, you are one of the fews who gotten a missed with these vehicles. There are many other drivers/owners who gotten a hit with the bad stuff like fuel pumps and engine/transmission problems. It's either a hit or miss. But mostly hits.
400lv8 2 years ago
If anyone is really interested in the pros and cons of LR ownership you should ask an owner or visit a LR forum. I have a series 1 (1949) and a series 3 (1976) and my experience has been quite different that what you have described.
serepx 2 years ago
Like I said you are one of the few who has experienced no problems with your LR but according to consumer's review the LR is rated worst than most cars for reliability by owners and drivers.I'm talking about problems with the vehicle that will leave you stranded. During my research I found out that it's now Toyota and Mercedes-Benz that's roaming most parts of Africa now where it used to be LR. What happened? Mercedes-benz and Toyota are rated better reliability than LR.
400lv8 2 years ago
As i said earlier if you want to get a true indication of the reliability of LRs go to LR forums such as AULRO. JD power survey is not nearly as informative as info gained from long term owners. Im sure if you do your research you will find that the great majority of LR owners are very happy with their vehicles.
serepx 2 years ago
I'm sure that in the LR forums the owners are very dedicated to LR vehicles and love it very much. It's just that one of my college professor who travels a lot said that the last time he was in Africa(don't remember which part of) in 2007 that he mostly saw Toyota and Mercedes-Benz. There wasn't much LR like there were in the early 70's and 80's. Just wondering why? Thanks for the AULRO info, will check it.
400lv8 2 years ago
I just dont understand about all the reliability problems with land rover?
I have a 200tdi defender with 225000 miles under it belt and I have had it for 10 yrs and never let me down.
We have a 2001 td5 disco with only a relay problem in the 8yrs of ownership and also a hi-cap td5 for work with 145000 on the clock with no problem yet apart from dual mass flywheel, it is used for heavy towing!
The only parts I have ever fitted is wearing parts like brakes, tires.
I service them regular.
oedixey 2 years ago
It's true like 4xforum said.Comfort, road holding and safety do matter to most drivers out there. These vehicles are driven on open roads to get to your off-road destination. I would choose the Landcruiser over a Defender anyday because of the reliability issues with the Land Rovers.Sure, they may perform a little better but the real question is will it leave me stranded? And sure the Defender made it up the steep hill climb the first try but it's not like the Landcruiser didn't make it at all.
400lv8 2 years ago
These vehicles are driven on tar roads to get to the places they are driven off road. Road holding, comfort and safety DO matter to 99% of those who drive them. And I said, in some conditions, the LR is better, but lock the Cruisers lockers, and there is nothing in it. From, then, it is up to the drivers to make them perform better.
4xforum 2 years ago
The only thing Landrover has is they dont rust, but who wants to keep a car for 15 years these days?
spaceboozer 2 years ago
Land Rovers do rust... it's just that they bodies don't, but the chassis, especially around the spring hangers and the steel firewall rust just like any other vehicle. That said, their rust protection chassis coatings are better than Toyota's. 4xforum
4xforum 2 years ago
I really like both the Land Rovers and Toyota Landcruisers but it's the reliability of the Defender that pushes me towards the Landcruiser. Now, Defenders are a fine 4x4 and I wouldn't mind owning one, but only if I also have a LC
perolito83 2 years ago
Can't agree more...
Land Cruiser is the best 4x4 u can have: It's comfortable on road and off road...
MegaG15 2 years ago
I've heard the Defender is uncomfortable because it compromised to be able to do what other 4x4 can't :). If you take a look at the Discovery model or the Range Rover model. Those models are more comparable to the Land Cruiser because it doesn't compromise so much in the comfort department. The Defender is a tool, a purpose built 4x4 that doesn't compromise but it's maybe the best there is. I've seen in a video that 74% of all Defenders are still in circulation.
euheide 2 years ago
Can't disagree on that one, I know that there are still alot Defenders are driving on the roads...
But don't forget that Toyota is an allround branche (I dunno how it's called in english) Toyota produces Corollas, Yaris', Aygo's, Celica's, Supra's etc etc < all normal cars... And then also producing one of the best 4x4's in the world... That's not nothing man....
U can't compare Discovery + Range Rovers with Land Cruisers, they are not specialy made for off-road abilities...
MegaG15 2 years ago
Don't be fooled by the fact that both the Range Rover and the Discovery look like city SUV's nowadays. They are filled with offroad engineering. Computers that choose best settings for each type of terrain, etc.
Anyway, you're right about Toyota, I prefer Toyota as a brand 1000 times to Land Rover in quality and reliability. If I want a comfortable car to last all my life, that car would be a Toyota. And I'm not surprised if the Land Cruiser comes second to the Defender in offroad,
euheide 2 years ago
True true... But the new LandCruisers are also looking as City SUV's ... If i say a Landcruiser, I really mean a 70, 80 and maybe a 90 serie (the older ones).
MegaG15 2 years ago
Didn't know that. I have been watching videos from the old models and it's better than I thought before. The thing is it's a low profile car as no one speaks about it. While loads of people talk about the Defender I practically didn't knew about the LC (it's special offroad abilities) until recently :)
euheide 2 years ago
Also if I was to choose a 4x4 as my only car. That would be a Land Cruiser, not a Defender, because the Defender is mostly for offroad use, and I would only do like 20% offroad and 80% onroad, like most people that offroad.

Lets hope they are more comfortable than they were. Even my 1985 BJ70 has air ride seats. Like I said I've owned nine and used to bleed green. It was hard for me to admit but the toyota products are much better and way more dependable. I still love the look of my old 110 but didn't like replacing two transmissions and having a broken back from the garbage seats. I've seen the light and its toyota for me from now on.
audaciousduo 2 years ago
I've owned nine land rovers the last of which was a defender 110. I now own a BJ70 and FJ80 land cruiser with factory lockers. I'll never own another land rover again. You want to go in the bush, take the defender. Want to get back with out breaking another garbage transmission take the Toyota. I'll take dependability in the bush over the fairy tale of land rover. My 80 is exponentially more comfortable and and much more capable than my defender ever was.
audaciousduo 2 years ago
My Land Rovers all let be down in the bush. I broke half shafts on all my series trucks. I have broken every garbage transmission Land Rover ever built Series, LT77, R380 ... all crap. The did use the bomb proof 727 Chrysler unit in the old range rover and now use the salisbury (dana 60) for a differential. The engines and transfer cases never gave me any problems. Then again neither has my 400,000 Km BJ70 land cruiser. Won't find many rovers with those Km's.

Defender is the undisputed king of off road adventure. Land Cruiser is a bit too comfortable and good for ladies or Americans. Defender will never let you down and actually has a good fuel consumption compared to the Land cruiser.

Not even in the same ballpark.
LandCruisers and LandRovers have been all over the world in some of the most inhospitable terrain you can imagine.

End of the day solid axles, strong chassis, big tyres and simplicity are what it's about.

so cruiser is better. Noting new.

Well you know how people who are sentimental about the Landies will watch all the criticism and still not hear any of it.

Land Rover's are just a bundle of trouble.

Land rover is the best. Toyota made from plate and shipwrecks.

defender is far better than that thing...

dont land cruisers have plastic timing covers that are only held on by clips? surely this will become packed with mud and snap the timing belt in deep mud?

Owned a couple of land Rover's thou, Why is it when you watch the news for example out in the third world countries or the out back in Australia where the smelly stuff hit's the fan do you only ever see jap 4x4's and then their all mainly cruiser's ? bacause their ultra reliable !!

well said tetris418!
Land cruisers make other 4x4's look like beer cans in a recycle bin

i'm from Africa... Trust Landrover better though... Cruiser's engine is much bigger but too expensive on the juice...

do they still use Lucas wiring in that defender? That's a recipe for disaster there that Defender will leave you stranded in the dark in the dessert because just like the nickname Lucas wiring is *the prince of darkness* it sucks
d0min0danc1ng 3 years ago
You got it wrong my friend.... Didn't you know, the Lucas moto is: 'Get Home Before Dark'.
4xforum 3 years ago
Ha!
so your saying if you own a land rover you can only drive it during the day? get back home before dark or that lucas wiring will haunt you in darkness
d0min0danc1ng 3 years ago
Its a joke... funny yes? This motto was invented by the Land Rover fans, nobody else!
4xforum 3 years ago
oh Lucas, 4xforum is right, it's the truth, the whole of British leyland could have produced better cars if they let that company rot!
As soon as Bosch got involved things got better, mechanical and electrical!

all land rover seats are close the the edge so you can lean out and see your wheel when off roading/rock crawling. not a bad point.
