wow, safin with such class, just calmly walking up to the net and shaking the opponent's hand instead of dropping on the court and laying there for 10 seconds
I think if all players were to play at their full potential, Marat Safin would rank in the top five greatest players ever to have played this great game, I would rank Michael Stich as the greatest of all time (remember this is based on sheer ability) Peter Korda would rank second (his shotmaking left the audience speechless), McEnroe number 3, Sampras would come in fourth follwed by Safin. Cash would would be next on the list - he was a beast at the net, Becker was simply awsome at his best.
Can you guys imagine Nadal playing Sampras or Ivanisevic on grass - it would be a joke. Imagine Krajicek vs Jokovic on grass, Jokovic should just pack his bags before the match - I mean what would be the point of making a fool of himself. Those were the days - macho man tennis - Ivanisevic, Stich, Becker, Rusedski, Sampras, Safin - where are they now. We are left with Federer - the most overrated champion in history (it's just my opionion).
Nostalgia? May be, but let's face it, serve and volley game is dead. Now video game tennis has more variety than the real one. Baseline merchants plying their trade - big deal. Since 2000 clueless heads had been trying to slow the game down and look where thet brought us. They never realized that big serve volleyers were a rare breed and that was what made the game so exciting - Wimbledon finals: Agassi Ivanisevic1992, Sampras Agassi 1999, Ivanisevic Rafter 2001!!! - I REST MY CASE!
retard, sampras played federer in 2007 and beat him after he didnt pick up a raquet for 3 years, and federer said he could beat anyone on the tour in the top 10 with his serve and volley game, its not the tactic serve and volley, its the player, some cant do it some can, and then there is sampras. sampras went on the win the 2002 us open 2 years later against agassi
Safin was unstoppable when he was on but Pete in 2000 was near 30 years old in rapid decline. Ancient serve volley game? @redruster We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.....the competition was a lot better back then. Federer is great, but I still think that Pete was the greatest.......
I think you are wrong... Federer is the greatest ever, Sampras even says so. Federer is so great, that even if he naturally had a serving and volleying game, he was abble to change his game and beat all the baseliners at their own game. Did Sampras do that ? No ! He lost to all the new generation baseliners such as Safin, Nalbandian, Hewitt etc ...
@jonatev00 Sampras been declining since 99. So it's not like he was the same playa. I think his wasn't that the time he won his 12 GS. I think mentally he wasn't into it as he would been in the past. It's the same way with fed now. He is not as motivated to the point where he want to continue challenge people on a regular day basic. Federer is good, but i wouldn't call him the greatest. I think he is the best of his era which was 2003-07. I think that's his dominance period.
@Thutmosis7 Sampras was damn good even in 2000. I mean, you look at his record that year in slams, it's nothing to yawn about. Won Wimbledon, Final in the US Open, semis in Australia (beaten by Agassi in 5 sets), he still won another slam in 2002, more than 2 or 3 years past his best. He was actually playing really well this tournament, but Safin was on fire and he was reading each play beautifully, remniscent of Federer.
@davd1986 That was probably the last good yr until 2002 uso. I would say pete was ok not good.Pete level of play drop alot drastically. I think roger at 29 is better and more motivated than pete at the same age. Better technology and fitness in our time. I think pete in his prime matchup well with roger in his prime. I only give the slight edge to fed on clay. But on hardcourt i think they are evenly match or slight goes to pete. On grass pete is better.
Lots of people say Federer had no competitors but when you see Sampras reaching the final of the Us open while not playing his best level, I don't think Federer would reach a final of a grand slam today if he was in that shape.
We all know what was Safin capable of. He had his days when he was unbeatable, unfortunately he never actually utilized his talent. That famous win against Federer just simbolize Safins carrer.
I was at this match and it wasn't even as close as the score. Sampras had no answer to Safin's athletic ability or skill. None. The drop shot that Pete hit which Safin got to and then slipped after he passed Pete, you could tell by the look on Pete's face that it was over, he was just way over his head. Safin was the only player who could make the court look too small. His speed, quickness and range was > than any player I've ever seen. He could have been the GOAT. Too bad he wasn't.
My two favourite players all time. Pete wasn't at his best, but boy wasn't Marat amazing. IMO, he could have done more with his career but injuries were always a problem. The only year I won't forgive him for is 2002. Should have done a lot more.
Well, I miss these two a lot on court. Fluid games.
except for a couple tournaments, Safin didnt show this form. Pete ran into a guy that didn't miss. 7 unforceed errors??? That's unheard of in your first slam final. The match he had against Federer at the AO though was unreal.
just as i started getting into tennis...Safin had to leave...if only i was older, i could have started watching him play from 97 for 13 years! as oppose to just two.DAMN!!!!!!!!
Pete look old. Pete was not in the top 10 i don't think so. He was burned out period. It's not the pete sampras of prime, it's the washup one he beated.
Pete got the ass whoopin' he deserved for so many years. Hewitt smashing him the next year was beautiful, too. It is too bad Federer and Nadal didn't get to beat him up, also. Nadal would have retired Pete on the spot. He would broke his backhand and legs down to dust.
Wow you have the intellect of about a 4 year old. Nadal loses to lesser players than Sampras at the US Open all the time. Use some logic retard. Of course Nadal would break him at the French but at the Open Nadal would be in pain trying to track down Pete's serves and groundies.
@tennis21000 Doubtful. He is well beyond Hewitt's ability. His strength matches up badly with Sampras weakness (Forehand to his backhand). Pete has never seen passing shots like Nadal.
@Polarcupcheck and yet for all this nonsense you've just written, it doesn't change the fact that sampras was the best ever on grass in his era. Nadal would have stood no chance against him at Wimbledon(which was the fastest surface in the world at that time). In fact Nadal even struggles at the fast hard courts at flushing meadows. And let's not even compare the legendary Pete with the likes of Hewitt and Safin. Having potential is something, but converting it to performance is something else.
@Polarcupcheck Ha ha really? Throw both Nadal and Fed (to a lesser extent) in the 1990s and they'd be like fish at sea against Sampras on the faster courts.
What was amazing was that if you saw Safin earlier in the tournament, he wasn't playing well at all. He barely got past the first round, was throwing rackets around the court and looked as if he was lost. He put it together and had an amazing run. The Sampras match wasn't even as close as the scores indicate. He completely dominated the match. Unfortunately he lost the following year and Pete lost to Hewitt in the final.
Safin's problem was always consistency. He could play great and he could play appallingly. I always remember the matches against Federer where Federer's greater accuracy always took MS apart.
I don't need to have one any majors to make the statement I did, Just like Mike Tyson's coach doesn't have to be able to kick his ass to coach him..:-).. Smart Ass!!!
@crackermoves I don't think he/she meant it as far as results or accomplishments, but rather the kind of personality he had that came with the talent he had. He was exciting to watch because of his unpredictable nature with his game and personality, otherwise he would not be so popular with tennis fans all over the world, especially women. You know, some fans of Marcelo Rios call him the greatest ever, but he only got to one major final, so it's mostly fans of those players who say that...
I can understand and agree he was all you say (And an awesome player), but that the comment @hishamabdulsmad made was that he was the best ever and best there will ever be..!! C'mon now, anyone would have responded to that the way I did.... It should have been re-worded a little different.. All good!!
@crackermoves No problem. Safin, is a co-favorite player of mine, along with Federer, because he is (was) an awesome talent that made the game look so easy, yet so powerful. He was also very respectful and paid respect to his opponents, win or lose. He was very honest with himself, his fans and the whole tennis community. Did he get a litle too crazy with his outbursts, oh yeah, but that's who he is, a tortured genious! He could have been one of the best ever, but injuries, mind....
safin is truly a classy player. just look how he doesnt really overexaggerate his celebration like falling on his knees or anything. he just holds up his arms a little. gotta love it lol
I remember watching this match and thought I saw the most dominating power tennis player ever. How sad Safin's potentials were never used fully in his later years.
As for Federer, I think its quite different for him than Sampras. Sampras' game was one dimensional at best, and once his explosiveness started to go, his game declined dramatically. The more baseline oriented Fed should have a longer shelf life at the top.
Not so crazy if you realize he is really a serve and volleyer with a super human serve. Never really have the ability to break serve consistently, when he was a step slower, he was a sitting duck everybody who can get the serve back. The same dramatic declined marked Rafter's career as well.
Watching this match between a young Safin and an aging Sampras, i am reminded of the del Potro and Federer US Open match.
Do you think Federer's heartbreaking loss to 20-year-old del Potro indicate a changing of the guard in the tennis world? How many more Slams do you think Federer has left in him?
dude he had 13 during usopen 2000. He won no grandslams in 2001 and won his last at the 2002 us open defeating andre agassi thus giving him his total of 14
They used that cliche when Nadal beat Federer at Wimbledon a year ago. He came back from illness, won a few Grand Slams and became No.1 again. Means nothing. A loss is a loss.
Probably one of the greatest talent in tennis history, it's a pity he has achieved only two majors, if he had wanted to he would have grabbed at least 10 grand slam titles. He definetly prefered to enjoy life and have fun rather than training hard.
For a while Marat has been the greatest tennis player of all times. He has been able to completely dominate and destroy the no. 1, Pete Sampras. What a player. What a phenomenon! What a man!
So Safin has lost his last match at Us open to Melzer, giving him a lot of winners beacause he didn't want to run. So sad when a champion like him accept to lose these kind of matches in his last year in atp, but if he doesn't enjoy the game anymore retirement is the right choice.
And he just lost to Monfils today in 3 sets. This is by far his worst year on tour. It's sad because it is his last one. Just one more good run Marat, one more, for all our sakes!
....Hewitt... He did what everyone thought he would do, just not in the amount of say Federer, but he's had a career that not many have had, and the fact that a lot of people (including me) say he has underachieved says a lot about his talent and abilities on the court. He could have won 6-7 slams by now, won many more tournaments, davis cups, etc, but the fact that he came back from numerous injuries and battled back when he could have easily hung the rackets up. Good luck in the future Marat
It's so weird to figure what kind of career Safin had what he could of had, etc.. It's really one of the most intriguing stories/predictions/assumptions of a tennis player in any era. Some people say he underachieved, some people think he is overrated, but the bottom line is he won just about everything: Davis cups, got to the semis in all 4 GS's, won 5masters series, been world #1, won some doubles titles, played in 4 GS finals and won 2, beat Federer, Agassi, Kuerten, Sampras, Roddick...
@rechedelphar The prerequisite for Federer and Nadal -- hard and keep groundies off both wings, including potent yet unbelievable passing shots from all over the place. All Hail The Safinator.
Safin is just a special player and a special person. Nobody has excited me to watch the game like Safin did when he burst on the scene in 1999. Good luck in his future endeavours. Bravo Marat.
Sampras lost because his game was too preditable. He served and then rushed to volley all the time! In today's standard, he would be blasted out of court in shame.
Not true at all. Well, semi-true. If he played today he would be in trouble, but that's because the surfaces have slowed down a ton since he retired. He was still going very strong in 2001 at Wimbledon and barely lost to an up and coming Federer, but then lost in the 2nd round in 2002 when the grass started to slow down. On faster courts, Sampras would still be among the best because his volleying was SO precise and his serve set it up so well. Even if you knew it was coming, it was too good.
My point is that just like any tennis fan (Safin's or not) you want to see these exciting, talented players excel, it's what makes you watch the game. I, like many others really got into the game watching him play beautiful tennis and show emotion like no other. Agassi was the guy I watched before Safin, but Safin just had the sort of game and persona that was never boring. It's too bad he's retiring at the end of the season, tennis will miss him. I know I will. Hopefully he changes his mind.
Do you think you would still like him as much if he was a robot and trained all day like most of the top players? I've learned to appreciate him the way he is, he won't change but at least he's always been true to himself, right. Regarding the other part of your comment, I've been a Safin fan for many years now and I actually want him to retire. It's obvious that he's struggling and won't return to his previous form and just doesn't deserve all the awful results lately.
I am actually a huge Safin fan. Not saying that to defend myself, but I really think he should of have focused more at times. I realize his 2004 comeback was awesome for him and the game, he himself said that it could have been a lot worse, and look at what happened: a AO final, 3-4 titles (2 masters), and almost beating Fed at the masters. 2005 injury was the one that did him, in. I retrack my comments about him not having enough heart (just throwing his rackets justifies that he has it.)
Safin's only problem is his head. Unfortunately that is a huge problem. Injuries didn't help him after 2000, but he really should have thought better about focusing on tennis. However, it seems he is unbothered by partying and the fact that he has MAJORLY underachieved in his career, but that's his problem, not mine, not Federers, not Sampras's....He can beat anybody when he is playing well, but tennis greatness is all about consistency, and Safin has none of that. All the shots but no heart.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Safin sucks.. Period, he has the talent, but passion isn't about talent, it's about the heart for the game. The way you respect it, the way you change it, Federer, and Sampras have done just that, they've gone BEYOND it, this is why they forever, will be the best tennis players. Forget stats, look at the way they play, their composition, their passion for the game.
You obviously are a very careful and longtime observer of Safin's game (this said with obvious irony). Let me tell you that 90% of the players would have retired several times if they had his career in terms of injuries. Stating that Safin doest heart the game is just plain ridiculous. The next time take a minute to think before you bash him ;)
@flysniper77 your bashing a guy who would fuck you up if you said this to him which i doubt you would never say he sucks to his face. you know nothing of what your talking about, shut.the.fuck.up.
@cj397 why dont u shut the fuck up bitch? who the fuck do u think u r? fucking tool, go grow a pair of balls and then even try to communicate with me bitch.wat the fuck do u kno abt tennis? u take a racquet and shove it up your ass u fuck head.
If, at the end of this final, you had said that Marat would never appear in another US Open final and only win one more slam in his career, the men in white coats would have taken you away to the asylum. Real shame that Safin wasted his talent and had a such a dodgy temprement - he could have been great
Safin lacks consistency, that's why he's a class below Nadal, Federer and Sampras. In 9 matches he only beat Federer 1 time. Same thing against Sampras.
The A-Game of Federer, Nadal, & Sampras will always beat A-Game of Safin.
yes his consistency is questionable but no doubt safin is the best when he plays to his full potential, A-game of federer vs A-game of safin...ever watched the 05 australian open...not to mention the injuries he has been through...safin is the best
He's beaten Federer at least twice and has a 4-3 record against Sampras. He is one of only four players who played more than five matches against Sampras and have a winning record and also the only player to have beaten Sampras in straight sets in a GS final without a tiebreak. When it comes to his A-game I'm sure he can beat any player in the history of the sport on their A-game on any surface.
after his knee injury in 05 he has never been the same, you faggot.. federer wouldnt be what he is today if safin was still around fuck you and federer
These are tennis great tennis players, they are not Gods. But if you favour Safin, nothing is wrong with that, no need to use vulgar language. I was only asking. I was just curious that's all.
who said they were gods you faggot??? i was telling your bitch ass why safin isnt number 1, you werent asking you were being a smart arse kunt, now fuck off
Greatness! Good old days Marat was so young and his match against Sampras will stay forever in the memories, a young russian named Marat Safin beats the legend Sampras for his first final in a major i cannot believe he will retire this year gotta miss him SO MUCH love you Marat
i was watching him play at the leg mason in dc... good god.. he strings his racket so tight.. everytime he hit the ball or served it sounded like a freakin gun shot... hes so awesome.
Marat could have been the man. It didn't turn out the way his fans, like myself, wanted. But he will always be remembered for two amazing matches: the US Open final against Sampras, and the Australian Open match against Federer.
Nobody will ever have groundstrokes that were as imposing as Marat.
Many Americans like myself are turned off by the current pros. During my Generation there were many great top Americans..... Sampras, Agassi, Courier, Chang, Todd Martin was cool....... Who are the current top Americans? Roddick, Blake, ......... They arent the champs like Sampras and Agassi were...... And who cares about this Novic Djokovic or whatever, lol. The current top pros are big hitters and athletic, but wheres the class, wheres the charm? BORING!!!!!!! WHO CARES!!!!!!!
its true. im still young and i appreciate the class of the retired players more than i do of the rivalry between nadal and federer. i mean, i think murray has substance, but i really prefered agassi sampras and courier. plus watching Mcenroe is fun.
djokovic may be the only charming pro - or at least the only one at the highest level whos capable of being self-aware and charming. perhaps his victory speech at the australian open can testify to this. nadal is awesome but very straightforward. murray has developed an extraordinary character. the rest of them are boys. youre right, they used to be men.
damn you need to chill the fuck out. go outside or something, that kinda senseless rage at people you've never met/don't know is pretty unhealthy, not to mention just plain embarassing that you could lose your cool so easily on da intranetz of all places.
well done Marat, that was some performance, Pity for him that roger came on the block and just left him some crumbs to pick on.

Pete got the ass whoopin' he deserved for so many years. Hewitt smashing him the next year was beautiful, too. It is too bad Federer and Nadal didn't get to beat him up, also. Nadal would have retired Pete on the spot. He would broke his backhand and legs down to dust.
Polarcupcheck 1 year ago
Wow you have the intellect of about a 4 year old. Nadal loses to lesser players than Sampras at the US Open all the time. Use some logic retard. Of course Nadal would break him at the French but at the Open Nadal would be in pain trying to track down Pete's serves and groundies.
tennis21000 1 year ago
@tennis21000 Doubtful. He is well beyond Hewitt's ability. His strength matches up badly with Sampras weakness (Forehand to his backhand). Pete has never seen passing shots like Nadal.
Polarcupcheck 1 year ago
@Polarcupcheck and yet for all this nonsense you've just written, it doesn't change the fact that sampras was the best ever on grass in his era. Nadal would have stood no chance against him at Wimbledon(which was the fastest surface in the world at that time). In fact Nadal even struggles at the fast hard courts at flushing meadows. And let's not even compare the legendary Pete with the likes of Hewitt and Safin. Having potential is something, but converting it to performance is something else.
krrazzyboy 1 year ago
@Polarcupcheck Ha ha really? Throw both Nadal and Fed (to a lesser extent) in the 1990s and they'd be like fish at sea against Sampras on the faster courts.
Meshalhasseen 1 year ago
What was amazing was that if you saw Safin earlier in the tournament, he wasn't playing well at all. He barely got past the first round, was throwing rackets around the court and looked as if he was lost. He put it together and had an amazing run. The Sampras match wasn't even as close as the scores indicate. He completely dominated the match. Unfortunately he lost the following year and Pete lost to Hewitt in the final.

crackermoves 2 years ago
@crackermoves I don't think he/she meant it as far as results or accomplishments, but rather the kind of personality he had that came with the talent he had. He was exciting to watch because of his unpredictable nature with his game and personality, otherwise he would not be so popular with tennis fans all over the world, especially women. You know, some fans of Marcelo Rios call him the greatest ever, but he only got to one major final, so it's mostly fans of those players who say that...
davd1986 2 years ago
I can understand and agree he was all you say (And an awesome player), but that the comment @hishamabdulsmad made was that he was the best ever and best there will ever be..!! C'mon now, anyone would have responded to that the way I did.... It should have been re-worded a little different.. All good!!
crackermoves 2 years ago
@crackermoves No problem. Safin, is a co-favorite player of mine, along with Federer, because he is (was) an awesome talent that made the game look so easy, yet so powerful. He was also very respectful and paid respect to his opponents, win or lose. He was very honest with himself, his fans and the whole tennis community. Did he get a litle too crazy with his outbursts, oh yeah, but that's who he is, a tortured genious! He could have been one of the best ever, but injuries, mind....

The more baseline oriented Fed should have a longer shelf life at the top.
crystalamp 2 years ago
Crystalamp... I don't think I've ever heard Pete Sampras' game described as "one dimensional" =) I think that's insane...
SeanMcGibbon 2 years ago
Not so crazy if you realize he is really a serve and volleyer with a super human serve. Never really have the ability to break serve consistently, when he was a step slower, he was a sitting duck everybody who can get the serve back. The same dramatic declined marked Rafter's career as well.
crystalamp 2 years ago
Watching this match between a young Safin and an aging Sampras, i am reminded of the del Potro and Federer US Open match.
Do you think Federer's heartbreaking loss to 20-year-old del Potro indicate a changing of the guard in the tennis world? How many more Slams do you think Federer has left in him?

Probably one of the greatest talent in tennis history, it's a pity he has achieved only two majors, if he had wanted to he would have grabbed at least 10 grand slam titles. He definetly prefered to enjoy life and have fun rather than training hard.

So Safin has lost his last match at Us open to Melzer, giving him a lot of winners beacause he didn't want to run. So sad when a champion like him accept to lose these kind of matches in his last year in atp, but if he doesn't enjoy the game anymore retirement is the right choice.
bonzocorrotto87 2 years ago
And he just lost to Monfils today in 3 sets. This is by far his worst year on tour. It's sad because it is his last one. Just one more good run Marat, one more, for all our sakes!
davd1986 2 years ago 3
....Hewitt... Good luck in the future Marat
davd1986 2 years ago 3
It's so weird to figure what kind of career Safin had what he could of had, etc.. It's really one of the most intriguing stories/predictions/assumptions of a tennis player in any era. Some people say he underachieved, some people think he is overrated, but the bottom line is he won just about everything: Davis cups, got to the semis in all 4 GS's, won 5masters series, been world #1, won some doubles titles, played in 4 GS finals and won 2, beat Federer, Agassi, Kuerten, Sampras, Roddick...
davd1986 2 years ago 5
This match really showed what the new era of tennis would look like. The serve and volleyer was crushed by the hard groundstrokes.

Sampras lost because his game was too preditable. He served and then rushed to volley all the time! In today's standard, he would be blasted out of court in shame.
AdvertChild98 2 years ago
Not on grass.
EricTheRed03 2 years ago
Not true at all. Well, semi-true. If he played today he would be in trouble, but that's because the surfaces have slowed down a ton since he retired. He was still going very strong in 2001 at Wimbledon and barely lost to an up and coming Federer, but then lost in the 2nd round in 2002 when the grass started to slow down. On faster courts, Sampras would still be among the best because his volleying was SO precise and his serve set it up so well. Even if you knew it was coming, it was too good.
dwilliams02 2 years ago
My point is that just like any tennis fan (Safin's or not) you want to see these exciting, talented players excel, it's what makes you watch the game. I, like many others really got into the game watching him play beautiful tennis and show emotion like no other. Agassi was the guy I watched before Safin, but Safin just had the sort of game and persona that was never boring. It's too bad he's retiring at the end of the season, tennis will miss him. I know I will. Hopefully he changes his mind.
davd1986 2 years ago
Do you think you would still like him as much if he was a robot and trained all day like most of the top players? I've learned to appreciate him the way he is, he won't change but at least he's always been true to himself, right. Regarding the other part of your comment, I've been a Safin fan for many years now and I actually want him to retire. It's obvious that he's struggling and won't return to his previous form and just doesn't deserve all the awful results lately.
bibiliotina 2 years ago 5
I am actually a huge Safin fan. Not saying that to defend myself, but I really think he should of have focused more at times. I realize his 2004 comeback was awesome for him and the game, he himself said that it could have been a lot worse, and look at what happened: a AO final, 3-4 titles (2 masters), and almost beating Fed at the masters. 2005 injury was the one that did him, in. I retrack my comments about him not having enough heart (just throwing his rackets justifies that he has it.)
davd1986 2 years ago
Safin is one of the most gifted players.
He is one the few who could beat Sampras in a GS final and who could beat Federer in his best shape (Aussi 05).
ulizinho 2 years ago 4
Safin's only problem is his head. Unfortunately that is a huge problem. Injuries didn't help him after 2000, but he really should have thought better about focusing on tennis. However, it seems he is unbothered by partying and the fact that he has MAJORLY underachieved in his career, but that's his problem, not mine, not Federers, not Sampras's....He can beat anybody when he is playing well, but tennis greatness is all about consistency, and Safin has none of that. All the shots but no heart.
davd1986 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Safin sucks.. Period, he has the talent, but passion isn't about talent, it's about the heart for the game. The way you respect it, the way you change it, Federer, and Sampras have done just that, they've gone BEYOND it, this is why they forever, will be the best tennis players. Forget stats, look at the way they play, their composition, their passion for the game.
flysniper77 2 years ago
You obviously are a very careful and longtime observer of Safin's game (this said with obvious irony). Let me tell you that 90% of the players would have retired several times if they had his career in terms of injuries. Stating that Safin doest heart the game is just plain ridiculous. The next time take a minute to think before you bash him ;)

Safin is very talented. It's seriously a shame he's short-tempered which often affects the matches he plays.
CknSalad 2 years ago 3
If, at the end of this final, you had said that Marat would never appear in another US Open final and only win one more slam in his career, the men in white coats would have taken you away to the asylum. Real shame that Safin wasted his talent and had a such a dodgy temprement - he could have been great
cam230723 2 years ago 2
Safin lacks consistency, that's why he's a class below Nadal, Federer and Sampras. In 9 matches he only beat Federer 1 time. Same thing against Sampras.
The A-Game of Federer, Nadal, & Sampras will always beat A-Game of Safin.
zellowmicka 2 years ago
yes his consistency is questionable but no doubt safin is the best when he plays to his full potential, A-game of federer vs A-game of safin...ever watched the 05 australian open...not to mention the injuries he has been through...safin is the best
westsidecarlton 2 years ago
He's beaten Federer at least twice and has a 4-3 record against Sampras. He is one of only four players who played more than five matches against Sampras and have a winning record and also the only player to have beaten Sampras in straight sets in a GS final without a tiebreak. When it comes to his A-game I'm sure he can beat any player in the history of the sport on their A-game on any surface.
