  • Never go far without a little big star

  • My friend showed me this song, a couple months later he passed away. No song will ever mean more to me.

  • I came hear because of That 70's Show, a year ago, about the time Alex Chilton died, and I now listen to Big Star and The Box Tops! What an incredible guy... R.I.P.

  • håkan hellström

  • Hell yeah That '70s show

  • The bad thing about this song is, its too short, really.

  • Where the hell have I been that I hadn't heard this song or of Big Star before now? Love this tune!

  • I can understand why some people in the comments thought Big Star covered this song from Elliott, I mean even the original sounds a fair bit like one his songs! Elliott was quite influenced by them....AHH I LOVE THEM ALL :)

  • I'll thank the Replacements and their song Alex Chilton for me discovering this song.

  • @hockeyrocks5757 Shut up niggy diggy.

  • I wish this song was longer

  • elliott smith brought me here, thanks man!

  • This song makes want to cry :')

  • I love the song Willin' by Little Feat. It's somewhat similar thist song but it's a masterpiece.

  • @valahogy

Musically Jeff Buckley was a genius if Elliott Smith was. I don't know if he was the best lyricist but we didn't see enough of him to ever know if that's the case.

  • There will never be a Bigger Star

  • wow. such a sweet song. makes me all warm and fuzzy inside :D

  • I'm sure someone else herd this song before you.. so suck it up, only you care where you herd it first

  • @KendraDee05 You herd cows and cats, you don't herd when you hear.

  • HIMYM and That 70's show!!

  • Comment removed

  • I've heard it everywhere. Does it matter? Music is meant to be appreciated not debated over.

  • I brought myself here

  • Håkan Hellström and his "13" brought me here. fock yeah.

  • satan brought me here.

  • Internet brought me here...

  • Michael Salussolia brought me here

  • Courtney Love brought me here :)

  • Shirley Manson and Garbage brought me here!

  • Thanks Alex...

  • @RobyHawkins @TheEnchantingWizard1 No way Elliott Smith wrote this when he was three. #callingbullshit

  • Such a beautiful tune and sentiment. Chilton was just a natural blessed with a great voice. It is so weird how he wanted to distance himself from a lot of this later on. I never could get into his R&B aspects.

  • @RobyHawkins @moccasins23 trololol double punch haha

  • @inspect112 successful troll is very successful

  • @RobyHawkins @TheEnchantingWizard1 I'm with the wizard. This one's not even close to Elliott Smith's original. You're an idiot.

  • this is one of the greatest songs ever written

  • They covered Elliott Smith's song very well. I like this one almost as much as the original.

  • @RobyHawkins You're an idiot.

  • @RobyHawkins Elliott Smith did a cover of THIS song, which came out in '72, in the late '90s. You didn't even need to have a working knowledge of music to know that, it's right in the title of the video. Therefore, you are an idiot.

I actually prefer Smith's version, though.

  • @TheEnchantingWizard1 I don't think it's ever really been determined who wrote the song. You can think that it was Big Star and I think it was Elliott Smith. No one really knows besides the person who actually wrote it. #TREATED

  • @RobyHawkins Alex Chilton of Big Star ABSOLUTELY wrote this song. That is a fact. Everyone with any sort of knowledge of music knows this. Elliott Smith was 3 years old when this song was released. #NOTtreated #you'restillafuckingidiot.

  • @TheEnchantingWizard1 Whatever man. Believe what you want and I'll believe the truth. IT'S UNDETERMINED OK? I didn't say that Smith absolutely wrote it. #probablyametalhead #learn2music

  • @RobyHawkins Your a f***in' MORON. Undetermined? Ellitot Smith covered this tune for the Thumbsucker soundtrack. Is it also undetermined that he covered Cat Steven's, Trouble for the same soundtrack? I guess every song in the history of music was written by Elliot Smith? Do you suffer from mental illness? What kind of idiot says the original artists work is undetermined just because they want another artist to take the credit? Elliot would have told u he covered it. Douchebag!

  • @Stratomaster11 HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH You mad bro?

  • @RobyHawkins Yeah man I am furious, angered, crazed, violent, enraged, riled, irate, fuming, infuriated, heated, incensed , vexed and wrathful. Other than that i'm alright. Happy New Year :)

  • @Stratomaster11 Likewise bruv. Sorry for the all the angered feelings. I'm glad you used vexed, but although I've always been an oxford comma guy.

  • @RobyHawkins LOL.....not a problem bro. No hard feelings here. All the best!

  • @RobyHawkins Oh, by the way you have an Elliot Smith video on your channel doing I'm Only Sleeping and in parentheses it says Beatles cover. Have you determined who wrote this? Lennon? McCartney? No ofcourse not. According to your logic it's undetermined. Maybe Elliot Smith wrote it although he wasn't born yet. I saw some of your comments on other vidoes....wishing people dead. KARMA! On your death certificate it will say,"Cause of death=undetermined"...LOL.

  • @RobyHawkins you're very very wrong.... Elliott covered it!!!!!!!!!

  • I fekken love this song!!!!!!

  • would you be an outlaw for my looouauuhuauhahove

  • I first heard this song when i was 13...in junior high...But i didn't really appreciate what this song was until i was much older...It was the way it was...i remember the crazy things i'd think of to say and do to try to impress a girl...the world was so much bigger then...And a walk alone with a girl was a marathon of mystery in uncharted waters...

  • the book 'love is a mixtape' brought me here

  • Elliott Smith <3

  • Guys, guys...

It does not matter how someone heard about this song. If they heard it first on that 70's show, knew it from their childhood or even heard it riding in the car with their parents, the point is that now the song is known to another person.

I am very grateful that Big Star is still listened to today. Thank you, uploader, you have earned a subscriber today.

  • @Doctaphil64 and another today

  • @Doctaphil64 Just to say, I heard it in the car with parents as a little kid :D

  • @frus1994 22 people who can get off m'back :-D

  • Sadly just discovered these dudes- seems like Stereospeak was influenced by them without even have listened!!

  • @Stereospeak Don't know if you know them or not, but the Replacements, with Paul Westerberg were HUGE fans of Big Star/Alex Chilton (of Big Star & Boxtops fame). You can really hear it in Replacements (aka Mats) stuff.

  • @err0r donea and eric brought me here

  • that 70s show; enough said

  • A great song, just beautiful. Thanks for posting!

  • First time I heard this was that 70's show

  • @Kr33mpuff I love the cover of Elliott so much!

  • I've died and gone to music heaven. Thankyou Alex N x

  • So beautiful. Words can't describe Big Star. Chilton was a complete artist.

  • bad sitcoms co-opting good music is shame

  • This is probably the most beautiful song of all time.

  • erick and donna swaying slowly to this song on their prom, in the season finale of that 70s show, was just beautiful. I miss that show so much *sigh

  • @a12356ut You are not the only one :- )

  • How I Met Your Mother took me here.

  • this ended the Show up and i love it hmmm (:

  • The greatest teen love song ever.

  • This was me and my boyfriends song before we broke up. We're still friends, have been for 2 years. He was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. He's recovering and is in chemotherapy. I'm learning to play this song for him.

  • that 70s show brought me here......

  • 2 minute date <3

  • Big Star a great Band isn't counted upon one of the greatest bands ever is a Musical Travesty if they were to have been played on the radio or hell even had a good company to distribute their albums they would have it to the very fucking top

  • One of my favourite tunes.

  • @LtDualla Oh yes, of course, the 80s was all cheesy pop. Iron Maiden, R.E.M., Metallica, U2, Pixies, Scorpions, etc... And don't even get me started on the 00s... So cheesy, right?

  • It doesn't matter what year you turned thirteen -- this one explains what it was like.

  • i like this song, but i dont want to live in the 70s

  • that's a pretty big green bar

  • I was alive in the 90s...-__- what i woulda given to be alive in the 70s =) all we had in the 90s were good cartoons 70s had it all.

  • @kaliberr021 ...and Michael Penn, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Weezer, Dandy Warhols and Foo Fighters just to name a few. 70's and 90's had awesome rock, sadly in the 80's and 00's the radio is full of cheesy pop. Don't just complain about, be the change you want to see in this world. In other words pick up a geetar and get to rockin.'

  • @LtDualla Hate to break it to you but there is crappy pop in every decade. There is great rock music on the radio you just have to listen to the right stations. just like there was horrible pop garbage airing on top of pops back in the 60s. I do agree with you though if you don't like the way music is going learn how to play something and do it your way.

  • @LtDualla every decade has its fare share of crap music and amazing music. it's a cliche but its true, you just have to dig deeper to find the good stuff

  • why did i have to be born in 95???? FML

  • children by the millions singing alex chilton

  • How i met your mother.. :)

  • @SSTRICK19 This was on How I met Your Mother?

  • @L0os1 Yaaahh.. search "2 minute date" it's with Ted in it.

  • I agree with Graham, great song, very smooth and mellow. I feel the same about

Ronnie Lane and Slim Chance, Done This One Before, and so many other great

songs. THANKS FOR THE GREAT POST! I have some new FAVS. Who knows

    where this could lead! YIPPEE:>))MGBUA:>))

  • i lovee this song.i miss that 70's show.i cried when i saw the series finale, that little walk down memory lane with eric and donna was so sad.

  • Everyone thinks of "That '70s Show" in connection with this song, but IMO it would have been even more perfect for "The Wonder Years".

  • god i miss that 70s show so much

  • I have never heard this on the radio. Somebody should go to jail for that. I don't know who, but we've gotta hold someone accountable.

  • Thumbs up if the 70's show brought you here!

  • I grew up in the 70s and this song captures the decade.

  • I'd never heard of these guys... I put on the album and instantly fell in love with every track.

  • That 70s show is my favorite show, and this is by far the best song ever written. i was breathless, speechless, but not so much tearless when i heard this song on the show. truely amazing(:

  • That 70s show led me here.

  • Brilliant song, brilliant album, brilliant group.

  • good god I love this song.

  • I'm 22 y.o and it's too bad that we don't make anymore song like that.

I wish i could go back in the 70's...

Oh and by the way :

20 peoples don't seen to have ticket for the dance ;).

  • I still don't quite understand why these guys weren't huge pop stars during the 70's. I guess they had terrible promotion or management, I'm not quite sure.

  • This song was on the finale of "that 70's show" when Eric came home from Africa on new years eve.

  • @RADRONWHIT

That part always makes me cry.

  • @RADRONWHIT That was my favorite part of the show.

  • @totalpokemongirl Sorry that was suppose to be a thumbs up..

  • big star may actually be the most criminally underrated band of the seventies, if not of all times. #1, radio city and third are musical masterpieces and absolute must haves. please continue to get people into them and keep their music alive.

  • It reminds you of that 70's show? How about this. That 70's show's writers pretty much got all their scripts from this one song....put that in your pipe and smoke it!

  • i love this song so much. this version and elliott smiths both so good

  • just heard that from that 70's show

  • this reminds me of that 70's show lol

  • @flowhawk10 Well they sang the theme, or a version of it. Their music is also played in a few episodes too :)

  • Very thoughtful and Beautiful song, always reminds me never to give up on love =D

Oh and also reminds me of That 70s show too xD

  • Some songs, when you listen to them, you swear you won't ever hear a better song. Times change and you find new favorite songs. They are almost always more transitory than this song.

  • this song always has me dangerously close to tearing up

  • Heavenly tune.

  • Now I know why Paul Westerberg was such a big fan of Big Star and Alex Chilton.

  • Rock 'n' roll is here to stay

  • Favorite song of all time. I was definitely born in the wrong decade...

  • @theworldatlargex407 same here haha

  • @theworldatlargex407 me too :)

  • @don19arroyo It's so great to know I'm not the only one (:

  • @theworldatlargex407 Me too, this is just simply brilliant. Don't make 'em like they used to! :D Jeff Buckley was our last genius (Thom Yorke is in a different league from everyone else).
