I came hear because of That 70's Show, a year ago, about the time Alex Chilton died, and I now listen to Big Star and The Box Tops! What an incredible guy... R.I.P.
I can understand why some people in the comments thought Big Star covered this song from Elliott, I mean even the original sounds a fair bit like one his songs! Elliott was quite influenced by them....AHH I LOVE THEM ALL :)
Musically Jeff Buckley was a genius if Elliott Smith was. I don't know if he was the best lyricist but we didn't see enough of him to ever know if that's the case.
Such a beautiful tune and sentiment. Chilton was just a natural blessed with a great voice. It is so weird how he wanted to distance himself from a lot of this later on. I never could get into his R&B aspects.
@RobyHawkins Elliott Smith did a cover of THIS song, which came out in '72, in the late '90s. You didn't even need to have a working knowledge of music to know that, it's right in the title of the video. Therefore, you are an idiot.
@TheEnchantingWizard1 I don't think it's ever really been determined who wrote the song. You can think that it was Big Star and I think it was Elliott Smith. No one really knows besides the person who actually wrote it. #TREATED
@RobyHawkins Alex Chilton of Big Star ABSOLUTELY wrote this song. That is a fact. Everyone with any sort of knowledge of music knows this. Elliott Smith was 3 years old when this song was released. #NOTtreated #you'restillafuckingidiot.
@TheEnchantingWizard1 Whatever man. Believe what you want and I'll believe the truth. IT'S UNDETERMINED OK? I didn't say that Smith absolutely wrote it. #probablyametalhead #learn2music
@RobyHawkins Your a f***in' MORON. Undetermined? Ellitot Smith covered this tune for the Thumbsucker soundtrack. Is it also undetermined that he covered Cat Steven's, Trouble for the same soundtrack? I guess every song in the history of music was written by Elliot Smith? Do you suffer from mental illness? What kind of idiot says the original artists work is undetermined just because they want another artist to take the credit? Elliot would have told u he covered it. Douchebag!
@RobyHawkins Yeah man I am furious, angered, crazed, violent, enraged, riled, irate, fuming, infuriated, heated, incensed , vexed and wrathful. Other than that i'm alright. Happy New Year :)
@RobyHawkins Oh, by the way you have an Elliot Smith video on your channel doing I'm Only Sleeping and in parentheses it says Beatles cover. Have you determined who wrote this? Lennon? McCartney? No ofcourse not. According to your logic it's undetermined. Maybe Elliot Smith wrote it although he wasn't born yet. I saw some of your comments on other vidoes....wishing people dead. KARMA! On your death certificate it will say,"Cause of death=undetermined"...LOL.
I first heard this song when i was 13...in junior high...But i didn't really appreciate what this song was until i was much older...It was the way it was...i remember the crazy things i'd think of to say and do to try to impress a girl...the world was so much bigger then...And a walk alone with a girl was a marathon of mystery in uncharted waters...
It does not matter how someone heard about this song. If they heard it first on that 70's show, knew it from their childhood or even heard it riding in the car with their parents, the point is that now the song is known to another person.
I am very grateful that Big Star is still listened to today. Thank you, uploader, you have earned a subscriber today.

Big Star a great Band isn't counted upon one of the greatest bands ever is a Musical Travesty if they were to have been played on the radio or hell even had a good company to distribute their albums they would have it to the very fucking top
@LtDualla Oh yes, of course, the 80s was all cheesy pop. Iron Maiden, R.E.M., Metallica, U2, Pixies, Scorpions, etc... And don't even get me started on the 00s... So cheesy, right?
@kaliberr021 ...and Michael Penn, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Weezer, Dandy Warhols and Foo Fighters just to name a few. 70's and 90's had awesome rock, sadly in the 80's and 00's the radio is full of cheesy pop. Don't just complain about, be the change you want to see in this world. In other words pick up a geetar and get to rockin.'
@LtDualla Hate to break it to you but there is crappy pop in every decade. There is great rock music on the radio you just have to listen to the right stations. just like there was horrible pop garbage airing on top of pops back in the 60s. I do agree with you though if you don't like the way music is going learn how to play something and do it your way.
